Welcome to Beatsmith micro lessons where we skip the fluff and get right to the point. Today's micro lesson is about 12-Tone Equal Temperament. Piano Keyboards have a repeating structure of twelve individual tones. Most Western music is written in 12-Tone Equal Temperament (12-TET), so the spaces in-between notes are equal in frequency. Modern keyboards have a pitch and modulation wheel allowing for much more expressiveness. Ultramodern instruments use MIDI polyphonic expression (MPE) to access even more dimensions of musical expression. Neat, huh? Add that to your Beatsmith toolkit!
