Hurricane Beryl continues to rapidly intensify and is expected to become a major hurricane before reaching Barbados late Sunday night.
Therefore a hurricane warning remains in effect for Barbados.
The current projected track is slightly south of the previous forecast and the center of Beryl is now expected to pass 65 miles (106 km) south of Barbados. The island is expected to feel the impacts associated with this system as early as late Sunday night into early Monday morning 1st July, 2024.

During the passage of Beryl hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall will cause flash flooding and severe thunderstorm activity is likely
to result in damage to some structures and multiple interruptions to power utilities and services. Marine conditions will be hazardous
ahead of and during the passage of Beryl therefore a small craft and high surf warning remains in effect for above-normal sea swells.

Hurricane Beryl continues to strengthen developing a small eyewall and at 11 pm today Saturday 29th June, 2024 was located near
10.4N 51.2W or about 955 km (595 miles) east-southeast of Barbados. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 85 MPH (140 Km/h). Present movement is towards the west at 20 MPH (31 Km/h). The minimum central pressure is 986mb. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 km (15 miles) from the center and tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 110 km (70 miles).

A Hurricane Warning is issued when sustained winds of 64 knots or greater (74 mph; 119kmh) associated with a hurricane are forecast to affect Barbados within 36 hours.

Beryl now a ‘very dangerous’ hurricane as it churns into the Caribbean (Per Washington Post)

The season’s first hurricane was heading toward Barbados on Saturday.

The tropical storm known as Beryl strengthened into the season’s first hurricane Saturday, intensifying quickly as it made its way into the Caribbean.

Beryl is projected to be at least a Category 3 hurricane, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall and a life-threatening storm surge to the Windward Islands from Sunday night through early Monday. The storm posed a “very dangerous situation” for those islands, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said in a video update Saturday.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the island of Barbados, while a hurricane watch was in effect for Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada. Beryl was expected to move northwest through the Caribbean this week, eventually passing through Jamaica and approaching southern Mexico.

Researchers have predicted a particularly busy hurricane season. Beryl’s early arrival made it one of few storms in history to have formed in the region this early in the year, the Hurricane Center said.

On Saturday, Beryl was centered about 700 miles east-southeast of Barbados, moving west at 22 mph with winds of up to 75 mph. The storm was benefiting from favorable conditions, including very warm water, Brennan said.

Beryl is expected to bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to Barbados and the Windward Islands.

In a recorded address on Friday, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley urged residents to prepare for the storm and protect each other.

“The reality is that we are not in a position to know exactly what type of weather we are going to face, but we know we are going to face some weather,” she said. “And you and I know that when these things happen, it is better to plan for the worst and pray for the best.”
