Congratulations to the In Flames team as they have been selected for #TIFF2023!
•
In Flames Directed by Zarrar Kahn
After the death of the family patriarch, a mother and daughter's precarious existence is ripped apart. They must find strength in each other if they are to survive the malevolent forces that threaten to engulf them.
•
“In Flames is a gripping drama about trauma, internalized abuse, and the misogyny woven into the fabric of any fundamentalist culture, with a streak of Guillermo del Toro’s empathetic ghost stories, in which spirits return with agendas the living cannot fully comprehend. In his feature directorial debut, Zarrar Kahn tells a story of women — not just Mariam, but her mother as well — forced to navigate the random violence of their oppressive, patriarchal society.”

Congratulations to the Black Life: Untold Stories team as they have been selected for #TIFF2023!
•
This new CBC documentary series uses contemporary interviews and archival footage to chronicle Canada’s long history of anti-Black racism, including episodes on police brutality and the rise of hip-hop music.
•
“Employing different visual aesthetics and editorial approaches in each episode, the show’s first episodes address the history of enslaved people in Canada that our politicians whitewash, and the attempts of Black Canadians to create their own communities in the face of intimidation and violence from their racist neighbours.”

Congratulations to the I am Sirat team as they have been selected for #TIFF2023!
•
I am Sirat Directed by Deepa Mehta and Sirat Taneja
Caught between duty and self-determination, Sirat Taneja is a transgender woman who must act as her mother’s son when at home in New Delhi, but can be the woman she really is with her friends and at work with the Government of India. A collaboration between director Deepa Mehta and Sirat, the film has been constructed around Sirat’s lens. Shot on smartphones, Sirat controls her narrative and makes it accessible to us.
•
“This is a true collaboration between Deepa Mehta and Sirat Taneja, whose candid footage, shot in portrait mode on her phone, is key to I Am Sirat’s authenticity. But Mehta’s empathetic eye and compassionate interviewing style prove just as essential, letting Sirat tell her own story on her own terms — and be seen, as she is, in full.”

Congratulations to the So Much Tenderness team as they have been selected for TIFF 2022!
•
So Much Tenderness Directed by Lina Rodriguez
A Colombian environmental lawyer flees to Canada after the death of her husband, but her attempt at a new life is challenged when she discovers that the past is not so easily left behind.
•
“With sensitivity and subtlety, Colombian-Canadian filmmaker Lina Rodríguez (Mis dos voces, This Time Tomorrow) brings a rare level of nuance to this deeply personal immigrant tale. Sidestepping clichés of nostalgia, trauma, and identity, So Much Tenderness takes a bittersweet look at both the challenges and the possibilities that come with migration. Rodríguez beautifully captures the way displacement permeates daily life, as well as how the fluidity of self allows us to add to who we are rather than to shed who we were.”

Congratulations to the PUSSY team as they have been selected for TIFF 2022!
•
PUSSY Directed by Joseph Amenta
This matter-of-fact drama follows three queer Toronto kids whose friendship is tested over one pivotal summer by divided loyalties, differing social situations, and anger issues.
•
“Toronto filmmaker Joseph Amenta’s remarkable debut is a no-bullsh*t coming-of-age drama that feels like the genderqueer sibling to last year’s breakout Canadian drama Scarborough. Here, as there, three vibrant young protagonists are learning to live in the larger world of the grown-up Greater Toronto Area, but there’s a twist: The kid heroes of Pussy already know exactly who they are. They just have to figure out everything else.”

Congratulations to the North of Normal team as they have been selected for TIFF 2022!
•
North of Normal Directed by Carly Stone
Toronto director Carly Stone explores the struggle to balance filial devotion with a longing for a more conventional life in her adaptation of Cea Sunrise Person’s 2014 memoir, which details the author’s counterculture youth in the wilds of 1970s Western Canada.
•
“Stone directs with energy and compassion, eliciting fine performances from her excellent cast, especially Gadon, whose Michelle invariably and often perilously wears her heart on her sleeve, and River Price-Maenpaa and Amanda Fix who play Cea as child and teenager, respectively. Exuberant and empathetic, North of Normal explores how principles and family can lead you astray and can also provide long-lasting succour.”
