This week, Renata Tebaldi.

Famous for her public feud with rival diva, Maria Callas, Tebaldi is just as famous for her mastery of Italian opera. Many argue the arias of Verdi and Puccini have yet to find as glorious an ambassador since she retired from the stage.

It's another edition of Theme Friday. We pick a theme, you populate the program with your thoughtful music requests.

This Week: Fall arrives this Sunday with the crunch and rustle of coloured leaves under your feet. It brings crisp mornings with the beginning of a chill in the air and a faint curl of woodsmoke from a chimney. The warming taste of spiced apple cider and the return of cozy sweater weather heralds this special season.

What music would you choose to celebrate the fall, the harvest and autumn's return? Your requests from 3-7pm.

To mark the beginning of Autumn, we asked our hosts here at The New Classical FM to share...

This Week: A suggestion from Jo-Ann who wrote to us to explain how she and her father would listen to The Oasis on The New Classical FM over the last few months while he was in the hospital. He passed away last weekend. Jo-Ann says: I thought about the many other listeners who also experienced the same kind of deep loss. In recognition of this I would like to suggest the theme “I remember you.” A piece of music that reminds us of a loved one, or loved ones, whom they have lost.

So this week, we are going to remember with stories, music and joy in the spirit of those we miss so much.

This Finnish singer only discovered he had a great voice 3 years into his medical degree! A baritone with a juicy low register, he was a commanding presence on stage, and had a voice flexible enough to traverse the extremes of hefty Wagner and agile Mozart.

This Week: Listener Miranda getting in touch with a great idea for a musical garden party. "Mark, the thwack of croquet mallets on a freshly cut lawn, Chilled rosé and G&Ts served in frosted glasses. Bunting and mason jars of flowers blowing in the breeze. The sound of laughter drifting across the party and fairy lights twinkling long into the night - but most importantly we must have music."

And we will… revel in the delight of a summer garden party with your requests from 3-7 pm.

This former principal viola of the Berkeley Symphony was in her thirties before deciding to sing full-time – and only after her viola was stolen! But when this American mezzo entered the operatic fray, it was as a fully-formed artist. She died too soon of breast cancer at 52, but had already established a legacy of “vocal beauty and passionate urgency of expression that was unsurpassed in her generation” (Gramophone)
