Dear City Staff,
Thank you for starting the sensory friendly swim times.
This is a great first step for our city.
I would like to see:
- Swim Times that accommodate school and family considerations
- Expanded to more pools
- Expanded to more facilities
- Warmer water temperature
Thank you for starting this initiative and giving those with disabilities a chance to enjoy the pools and other amenities that Surrey has to offer.

Well, we've been busy at our household entering a Lego contest put on by realtor Casey Duncan - Macdonald Realty and asides from showing you pictures, here's a full video walk through of this ginormous neighbourhood...I'm still not sure where I am going to put this in the house.

Each section was 1 family members entry (with the exception of the middle with road plates, that was all me) but we all worked on various parts.

New Episode! "Setting Boundaries in Advocacy"

Back in April, my family and I went to sign a petition to save Strong Start, which is a free, low barrier programs for children to be introduced to many of the activities they would experience at school; think of it as pre-pre-school.

Both of our kids have attended, and it was a very positive experience for us.

At the rally though, I met a politician who was from a political party that I was shocked to see there especially considering their stance on many issues.

As my family and I went home, I was left feeling angry because this person was campaigning (even though we don’t have an election officially starting until October 2024) and doesn’t really believe in the reason that many of us we’re there.

The whole episode is centered around the boundaries that we draw, how can we bring people into a conversation.

We have inherited a culture where people work in these silo’s and there isn’t a conversation to go and talk to other people and hear perspectives that are different than yours.

I have less and less patience with adults who are adamant that they have already learnt everything they need to learn in their career.

Things change.
Information changes.
Society changes.

What I learned about Autistic kids at uni 10+ years ago was absolute rubbish. None of that info holds up today.

Even the stuff being taught a few years ago. Even the stuff being taught by non-Autistic lecturers now.

We need to stay on top of it.
We need to get our info from the right places.

Telling me 'I've been doing this job for 20 years' does not fill me with confidence. It tells me that you have been working with harmful information from way back. And I hope you have done some Autistic-led PD recently and changed your practice. But more often than not, that's not the case.

Why are so many adults afraid to unlearn the harmful, outdated stuff?

I don't understand?

At the #Advocon conference I connected with Live Educate Transform Society LET'S who had some really cool sensory items that I was aware of it, things like breathing stickers, texture stickers and if you want to create a sensory friendly space - Heather is the person to reach out too! I had a great idea with the sensory stickers and wanted to share it with you over these few videos. I keep these with me when I go to the school and I've even recommended this to the City of Surrey as a resource for lifeguards.
