Social media can encompass an array of to-dos that can make it seem absolutely dumbfounding - where to even start?

However, it doesn't have to be too complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes a day to do the following:

✅ Use hashtags on stories. This applies mostly to Instagram. Of course stories don't always often make it onto the explore page, but they're a good way to increase the likelihood of a larger audience coming across your stories.

✅ Post/re-post stories everyday - this is great and so quick to do. Use your posts to repost as stories, or create your own stories. They can be literally anything - a picture of your day with a prompt for your audience, a business update, or anything else that comes to mind. The key is to stay at the front of the story lineup for your audience.

✅ Comment on others' posts! This is an excellent way to show engagement and increase the likelihood that others will reciprocate. A win-win for everyone!

Happy Thursday!

While we often encourage our clients to focus on creating content for their main feeds, the other, not-so-little things are important as well, such as:

🌙Using hashtags on stories: This is an easy way to ensure that your stories can be recommended to beyond just your followers.

🌙Post/reposting stories everyday: Whenever possible, this is a great way to literally stay in front of your audience due to your frequent updates and reminders.

🌙Commenting on others' posts: Ensure you're engaging with others so that others will be more inclined to engage with you! Commenting is only one form of engaging - dm-ing or collaborating with other businesses, or participating in polls, etc. are also methods for engagement.

It can be difficult to figure out exactly what kind of information and/or content is required to get started in earnest with your social media marketing approach.

While this guide is certainly not exhaustive, it's an excellent starting guide and will take a business at any stage far.

🌙A posting schedule: It can be easier to handle your approach to social media marketing if you know what days and times you'll be posting throughout the week, rather than waiting until you have time and posting off-hand.

🌙A brand kit: This includes your brand colours, logo variations, and the fonts you'll be using. Spend some time coming up with these rather than choosing colours and assets on a whim - your social media brand will appear more polished and professional.

🌙Content creation tools: If you're new to creating content and unsure of where to start, Canva is a great place to start for basic templates. If you're making video content, there are great mobile video editors such as CapCut. Finally, to ensure you're using royalty-free assets (which is very important), there are several websites available for general use, such as Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay.

🌙Hashtags: Research and compile a list of those most relevant to your niche. Switch them up/update them regularly so you can see if doing so improves your reach. Take advantage of using these often, if not always.

🌙Analytics: Many of us post and go, while only occasionally taking advantage of the built-in analytics that social media platforms provide. A good rule of thumb is to check at least monthly to see how your reach, engagement, and follower count are doing - note which posts are performing best, and which times your audience is more active. This information will allow you to tweak or change your social media marketing approach moving forward.

"What even is a micro-trend?" you might ask yourself. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A micro-trend is essentially a short-lived but extremely popular trend that involves a certain reference, perhaps to pop culture or otherwise.

The best example currently is that of popular sound bites or audios that become popular for weeks to months on end on platforms like Tik-Tok and Instagram.

These trends are almost always low-barrier, which makes them very easy to jump onto. Most of the time they're poking fun at something and are easy to customize/adapt to your own situation/experiences.

The result? You hold a greater potential in getting noticed/going viral with micro-trends, and also show that you and/or your brand are relatable.

Ultimately, being relatable and approachable are key for small businesses - it shows who and what kind of person is behind the brand, which builds further trust and potential business.

We know it can seem almost impossible to narrow down the do's and dont's when it comes to growing your small business, especially with so many competitors.

For this reason, we have some basic tips below for you that go a long way in social media marketing. Note: These don't cover absolutely everything, but are a good start.

🌙Use Tik-Tok: It's an easy way to go viral with minimal effort. Make sure to link your info in your bio to push your audience back to Instagram, YouTube, or your business website.

🌙Stick with what works: A/B test various hashtags (ie: have a couple different batches and see which ones perform higher by looking at your post performance), use video content where possible (as it's more highly favoured currently on Instagram and Facebook, and of course, Tik-Tok), etc.

🌙Follow and interact with those who are more likely to be your audience base: This can look like following and commenting on such accounts, engaging or partnering with other businesses that are already on your audience's radar, and so forth.

🌙Use native insight metrics on your social media platforms to learn about your audience, best times to post, etc. There used to be a time when it was almost necessary to have a third party service to check insights, but the built-in analytics are quite robust for most social media platforms these days (and free!)

🌙Post often: This is the easiest and fastest way to build your brand. While you don't have to go crazy and post several times in one day, the more often you post, the more often you're in front of your followers and therefore more likely to get noticed, shared, etc.

Visual content is an interesting phenomenon: it's simultaneously easy yet also difficult to create content in today's world. How you ask?

It's easy in the sense that everyone can record and edit videos or take pictures with their smartphone and post them, but difficult in the sense that production quality is often hard to achieve with limited resources or training.

New IG Update!

By now you've likely heard of Clubhouse and its audio-focused social nature which has rapidly gained popularity. It seem's IG has formulated its own response to that, as it rolling out the options of muting your mic and/or turning off your video.

As you can see in the top left visual, there's 4 icons at the bottom of the screen, two of which include the ability to turn off your mix and video.

Instagram states that "...By giving people the option to mute their audio or turn off their video, hosts will have the added flexibility for their live-stream experience, as the added functionality could help decrease pressure to look or sound a certain way while broadcasting live."

Instagram is once again proving to be stiff competition to trailblazing social media applications, including those with their own unique innovative features.

We all know how strange it was when Instagram started featuring stories modelled off of the original Snapchat "Story" feature. It wasn't long until Instagram, and then nearly almost every other platform, followed.

More recently, TikTok has brought the short-form video, and corresponding Duet feature, to extreme popular. The Duet feature allows users to react to and add their own engagement to TikToks.

While we know Instagram's already created a parallel version of TikToks called "Reels", it's now set to release an equivalent to TikTok Duets, aka Remixes. This will similarly allow users to attach their own video to existing Reels and take advantage of trending memes, trends, and more.

IG has announced as of March 23rd, 2021 that they will be rolling out a "drafts" option for their IG story feature.

While details of which countries will receive this or an ETA are not available yet, we estimate it's not long before it does. This will make countless users' content easier to draft in advance, including for us!

🌘1: Branded content: make sure all of your content is comprised of a consistent set of brand colours, fonts, and logos. This creates a steady aesthetic which is visually pleasing and creates greater brand authority in the eyes of your social media followers.
🌘2: Call to action: having a clear CTA is key for prompting your audience to follow through with whatever action you'd like them to take, whether it be leaving a comment, tagging friends, or something else.
🌘3: Use copyright-free graphics: as much as possible, try to use original graphics. If you need to source some online, use infringement-free images and videos that you can find on sites such as Pixabay, Pexels, or Unsplash.

Sometimes it may seem easiest to post that which you have already at your disposal on social media and hope that it sticks, but that isn't always the case.

Having a carefully thought out social media strategy can help take your brand's exposure and popularity to the next level! See tips in detail below.

🌘1: Identify goals and establish target audience. For this one, you want to figure out if your aim is to increase traffic to your site, boost community engagement, grow your brand's audience, etc.

Once you do this, you'll have a better idea of which social media platforms are better suited for those goals. For example, for sending traffic to your site, Facebook might be an excellent platform to leverage. If your target audience is adults, then naturally you have a good fit, as Facebook is one of the main social medias which boasts a large adult user base.

🌘2: Establish key metrics. For your goals, you want to focus on the metrics that make the most sense. If your goal was to increase brand exposure, then simply looking at the amount of reach your posts have on Instagram, for example, would give you a better idea of how your posts are meeting that goal than likes alone.

🌘3: Creating engaging and relevant content: This looks different for each brand and business, but developing a couple of regular post styles within a central theme creates a style or pattern that your audience can then start to anticipate and look forward to. This is what makes your brand unique.

While most people know it's a good idea to post often on social media, what does "often" mean?

👉According to Oberlo's recent article which is linked below, the best times for posting on Facebook and Instagram are as follows. Keep in mind the author recommends posting according to the Eastern Standard Time as that is when most users are active in the US and Canada. If these are not your target demographics, then you can stick to your local time zone.

🌘Instagram: Pre-Covid-19, the best day to post was Wednesday from 10:00am-11:00am, while the worst day was Sunday. During the pandemic with increased social media activity, however, the best days have become Monday, Tuesday and Fridays from 11:00am-2:00pm.

🌘Facebook: The best time to post on Facebook pre-Covid-19 was Wednesday at 11:00am and from 1:00-2:00pm. The worst day to post was Sunday. Since the pandemic, the most favourable times to post have been Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00am-11:00am. Weekends continue to be the worst days to post, alongside weekday evenings.

🌘Interesting tidbit: the author advises not to post more than once a day, or else post engagement can actually decrease.
