Check out this note on The Sacredness of Marriage between One Man and One Woman. This message was aired on our Sunday morning Let the Bible Speak program recently:
Holy Matrimony: The Sacredness of Marriage between one man and one woman.
There is a lot of truth in the old adage that two is company, three is a crowd. In God's order of marriage there are only two, one man and one woman. This is God’s order from creation. It is a simple fact of biology that God made man male and female, and marriage between one man and one woman also has the blessing of God as His master plan for the government of the world.
In Ephesians chapter five, the apostle Paul taught the “leave and cleave” principle. The man is to set up a new family unit by leaving his own mother and father and cleaving to his wife, so that they become one flesh. They become a new family joined together in holy matrimony in the sight of God.
This is precious and beautiful, but also fundamental to any society. Hear the words of the apostle Paul, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” Paul stated that this is a great mystery. Not in the sense of being unknown or confusing, but in the sense of being special, holy and sacred in the eyes of God.
Again, it is even more special and beautiful, with an even higher level of mystery in that it reflects the union between Christ and his church. In the Bible, marriage between one man and one woman as husband and wife is a picture of the Lord Jesus taking a bride to himself as his wife. The redeemed people who confess Christ as Saviour are so joined to the Lord that they are considered “members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones” (Ephesians 5:30). “They two shall be one flesh” Ephesians 5:31).
So, marriage between one man and one woman is God’s ordained will for the human race. Marital relations are pure in God’s sight. It honours God for a man and woman to live together. The love they share and their united walk through life glorifies God. It mirrors the wonder of the gospel of Christ. It is a gospel witness in real life, in real time. God is pleased with the happy and holy communion they display as husband and wife. Their home, their children, their commitment and fidelity to each other all testify of a wonder that there is a Saviour who has taken a bride to Himself to love, to support to whom the Lord will be ever faithful even for all eternity.
A Christian husband will listen to the exhortations to love his wife just as Christ loved the church. He will confess that he has never loved his wife as the Lord Jesus loves his bride, the church, for Christ died for her. In like manner, a Christian wife will take heed to submit herself unto her own husband as unto the Lord. She reads this also in Ephesians chapter five and learns the secret to a blessed marriage with the loving, shepherding care of her husband - her house-band - who shelters her and cares for her.
All of this falls into place by the union of one man and one woman. It is a great mystery, copied after Christ and his church. Any other model breaks the pattern. To change the sacred pattern is to defile the body and destroy the picture of Christ and his church.
So, we whole heartedly hold on to the sacredness of marriage between one man and one woman. We dare not change it, nor twist it. No matter the pressures within this rebellious society, God will always honour marriage between one man and one woman.
