February is -an opportunity to share stories & accomplishments of exceptional people who call NL home. Meet Ife Alaba, a singer/songwriter from Nigeria, who began her music career as a performer at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2017, later releasing her debut single “All By Myself” in 2020. Ife is co-host of CBC Newfoundland and Labrador web series ”Stuffed”. She is producer & host of “Being Black in NL”. Ife worked in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation & Butter Pictures Inc. to organize a documentary boot camp for Black people in City of St. John's.

BLACK CREATIVES DOCUMENTARY FILM CAMP! presented by OCCUPY ALL SPACES in partnership with Newfoundland & Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC). An immersive hands on bootcamp for Black Creatives and Storytellers in St. John’s, NL looking to gain hands-on experience in filmmaking! Mentored by professional Black filmmakers, participants will work together as a crew to shoot and produce a short documentary, learn how to start a production company, and apply for funding.
Apply now! No filmmaking experience necessary. Space is limited to 6 participants. Each participant receives an honorarium of $150/day for their time!

CRUSH – Winner of the 2017 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award

CRUSH is a short film from award winning Writer/Director Kerry Gamberg, being produced by BUTTER PICTURES INC. with the 2017 RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, which includes support from the RBC Foundation, St. John's International Women's Film Festival, the Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker’s Fund, CBC Newfoundland and Labrador, NL Film Development Corporation, Mo Entertainment, NIFCO and more.

BUTTER PICTURES INC. will be holding auditions for the upcoming short film, CRUSH, from award winning writer/director Kerry Gamberg. The short film will be shot over two days in St. John’s, NL, during late June 2018, and will premiere at the closing night of the St. John's International Women's Film Festival in October 2018.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 26th in St. John’s, and may also be submitted via email (see below).

Please note, we are looking for an inclusive and diverse cast with the goal of portraying an authentic and encompassing junior high school experience. First time actors are welcome! Actors between the ages of 12 and 16 years old are encouraged to apply, so long as they can pass for junior high age.

Synopsis:

PRINCIPAL ROLES:

KYLA (14ish) – Kyla is a spunky and confident 14 year old, with a dark sense of humour and a love for classic horror movies, blood and guts, and special effects. Known for being a bit of a rebel, Kyla’s no stranger to the guidance counselor or principal’s office.

LUKE (12/13ish) – Luke is the new kid in town, and at school. He’s a little quiet and kind of reserved. But that’s really just because he’s new. When Luke realizes he’s fallen in with the wrong crowd at school, he looks for a way to take a stand and back away without getting himself beat up.

KEV (14/15ish) – Kev is the overgrown school bully and self-proclaimed class clown. Big for his age, he tends to throw his weight around, and push people into being his friend, or getting what he wants. Which is usually just a reaction or attention of any kind.

Chafe's Landing Restaurant is the restaurant, in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, where Anthony Bourdain sat down with local historian Dale Jarvis, and happens to serve some of the best fish and chips the province has to offer!

CALL FOR BACKGROUND PLAYERS - ASKIN’ FOR IT
SEEKING: Young adults (all genders) of 18-25 years old (x15-20), who are able to pass for High School seniors.

Needed for TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2018

ASKIN’ FOR IT – A short film being produced under the ACTRA AIP Agreement as part of the NIFCO Picture Start Program with support from Telefilm Canada, NLFDC and CBC. Under the ACTRA AIP Agreement, BACKGROUND PLAYERS are paid for a minimum 4 hour call at $10.50 per hour for AIP productions.

**PLEASE NOTE, due to constraints in our schedule, and the subject matter of the film, we are restricting the background players to the ages of 18-24 years old. We are unable to accommodate BG players under the age of 18 years old.

Synopsis: Three high school BFF’s contemplate how to handle an assault and confront the accused at a party.

The sequence calling for background is a series of scenes at a high school house party. Background players will be asked to come camera ready, dance, and simulate drinking/general house party antics.
