They are easily recognizable by their reddish-brown fur, long bushy tails, and pointed tufts of fur over their ears. These squirrels are primarily arboreal, meaning they live in trees, and their long tails help them balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree or running along branches. The bushy tail also serves as a blanket to keep them warm during sleep.

Red squirrels are primarily herbivorous, feeding on seeds, nuts, berries, and fungi. They are known for their habit of caching food in various locations to ensure they have enough to eat during the winter months.
