Two Moons, by Zacharie Bachand, an artist based in Montréal. His work deals with the relationship between self and place. In this diptych, the moon acts as a connector between nature and city. We create meaning differently in these places, but certain symbols can invoke a sense of interconnection between them. In Two Moons, the moon summons a sense of inner calm that connects all places.

He is currently completing an MFA in Documentary Studies at Ryerson University.

Sneek peek at an artist from Issue 8, coming soon!

Untitled 8, by Brooke Peloquin an Ottawa-based film photographer. Her work is inspired by the
slow, thoughtful process of film and the nostalgic feeling it allows. People, places, nature, things
- everything is shootable. A trusty Canon AE-1 is her tool of choice.

Something Gnawing in the Dark (1-3), red rope, wood
by Don Kwan.

Don Kwan reflects on the potential for objects as artistic devices to explore the complex ideas of identity in the diaspora. Kwan juxtaposes traditional Chinese knotwork, a common signifier of luck and prosperity in Chinese culture alongside objects commonly found in the Canadian landscape, particularly the chewed wood ends made by a beaver.

A third-generation Chinese Canadian, Don Kwan turns to his own experiences and challenges of being a gay, East Asian artist as a way to ground in broader conversations about identity, representations, and intergenerational memory-making in the diaspora.

"A Fair Night - Polaroid", by Michael Smith. Born in Southern Ontario and moved out to Ottawa in 2016 for school. He picked up photography as a hobby in the summer of 2019 and quickly fell in love with old cameras - the quirks and individuality that each camera presents. He now runs a business with his partner, .ltd where they buy, refurbish, and sell film cameras. Along the way, he has gotten the opportunity to test all sorts of different cameras and discover the various personalities that some cameras seem to have. This has become a sort of haven for him in the midst of all the pandemic mess.

The series “A Fair Night” was shot in the Fall of 2019, when Michael was delving deep into the film scene. The initial idea behind the shoot was to capture the nostalgia he had from visiting fall fairs with his family. While that was a success at the time, he finds himself coming back to these photos with another perception of nostalgia. This time, he's left feeling nostalgic for the idea of a fair, in a public place. He never imagined it would happen like this, let alone so fast.

02/14/2021

Beyond purpose, ongoing series. Gabriella Scali is a Montreal based photographer who started taking pictures as a young teenager, always dreaming of travelling to quiet places and capturing people by creating mood and settings around them. In 2016, she received her BFA in Photography at Concordia University. She also travelled around Europe to inspire herself from new surroundings, meanwhile studying in Germany at the Bauhaus University to improve her design skills. She now works as a graphic designer in a non-profit organization and works on her photography projects on the weekend.

These images were created after an extended break from creating artwork. Burned out from attempting to navigate the formalities of the visual art industry, this series began without pre-conceived notions or grand conceptual framework.

Though a free-form exploration in the beginning, structure and intention did organically evolve. Portraits of friends were reconfigured using collage techniques to playfully manipulate 2D space and navigate between layers of altered perception. Rejuvenated by the freedoms found in this process, this project has altered her perception of what creating art means to her and how she will approach it going forward.

"My friend Emily is a tattoo artist by trade, and I wanted to showcase her obsession with tattoo's in this old school blue-tiled bathroom that I have in my apartment. I got her to bring her golden grillz (gold teeth) to add to the gritty/gangster/not caring/dark vibe that I often like to portray in my work. This series pushes the notion that art can be created literally everywhere, even in a small old style bathroom. I even took the door off the hinges so we could shoot the space better."

"Supernatural Women is an ongoing series of documenting womanhood within our own time and society while pulling strength from mythological Goddesses and warrior Princesses. Being a woman comes with many challenges and privileges. As a young woman quickly approaching my thirties, I have been learning to love my body, my mind, my sexuality, love for myself and other women alike. I have faced head-on demons inside of my own mind that was caused by being burned by lovers, ex-friends, and everyday nuances of how I'm treated as a woman by society. Supernatural Women has been an outlet for myself and other women participating in this project to speak about their challenges, strengths and what their inner goddess means to them."
