It’s a Brand New Look.

The Navigator is changing now with themed issues! The first one came out in September, titled “New Wave,” to show the changes being made by the new team. We even have a new colour scheme. How great is that?

You can check out this issue on thenav.ca

We, of course, do understand that a handful of Canadians cannot see our posts (Social Media Manager included). Still, please bear with us as we also figure out these new times.

HEY! YOU!
Let’s work together!

Here at The Nav, we pay students to tell the stories they want to hear.

As always, The Nav offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the journalism field via contributing to the production of our online magazine.

At present, we’re hoping to hire one new Navigator for the 2023-2024 production year. Here’s what we’re looking for:

✨ Nav Reporter ✨

The Nav Reporter is responsible for producing short news articles on a frequent and consistent basis, ensuring publication of timely, relevant content. Reporting from Nanaimo’s community and the VIU campus, the reporter edits and uploads news stories as they break. Stories will be short and succinct and can cover any subject (news, sports, arts, and features). The Nav Reporter will also work closely with the Social Media and Marketing Manager to get "on the air" videos for social platforms. Applicants should have basic editing skills and computer literacy necessary to copy edit and upload their own stories. Experience with Wordpress is preferred.

As The Nav values diverse voices, applicants who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and/or part of any marginalized community not listed here will be strongly considered.

If you’re a VIU student and think you might be a good fit for this position, send us your resume + writing sample by July 21!

To apply, please contact:

The Navigator Newspaper Society Board of Directors Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place in Building 193, Room 217 on the VIU Nanaimo Campus (900 Fifth Street, Nanaimo, BC V9R 5S5) and on Google Meet on February 28, 2023, at 5 pm PST.

Nominations are now open for the annual election. To nominate, visit this Google Form and submit before nominations close on February 13.

Successful nominees will work together with a small team of board members to make sure the business of The Navigator functions and for creative production to continue at full mast. It’s an incredible work experience (that looks great on a resume) with a variety of board roles to hone your skills, and a meaningful outcome that contributes to the VIU community.

Board members will receive an annual compensation of $500 if they reach attendance quotas.
