The Personas of a Poet

I am a fool, a knave.
I'll dive down the depths of my emotion.
With no logic or regard.
Drowning is dizzying, splendid.
I'll brave Dante's fires for feelings' sake.

The Poetry World Cup & Shakespeare's Pen

Wax Poetry and Art introduces two exciting new ways to experience, and to participate in, the excellent poetry being written all over the world. Introducing, the Poetry World Cup and Shakespeare's Pen

The Poetry World Cup

The Poetry World Cup is a new annual celebration of poetry around the world. The English language has spread across the world. As well, the adoption of English as a second language by people in many countries means that the widest variety of humans belongs equally to a shared artistic tradition, poetry.

The inaugural Poetry World Cup will happen right here in Wax Poetry and Art on January 15th, 2025. The most-read poems from eight countries published on the Wax Poetry and Art Network in 2024 will be assembled into the Poetry World Cup 2025 Collection. These poems and their poets will represent their nations in the Poetry World Cup. A reading period will commence.

This is not a critical competition. The selected poems are already published and pre-confirmed to be excellent. This is a celebration of the vibrancy and internationality of poetry, and of all eight Poetry World Cup Finalists. The Poetry World Cup Champion will be the nation whose poem is the most read during the reading period. The winning nation and poet will be announced on May 15th, 2025.

Poetry World Cup Qualification

Retroactively to January 2024, all single poem submissions published in any Wax Poetry and Art publication are automatically entered into the Poetry World Cup for consideration as one of the eight Finalists.

Shakespeare's Pen
Shakespeare's Pen is a symbol of poetic excellence. Shakespeare's Pen is a cultural inheritance from the past to the future. One day, perhaps centuries from now, another name will eclipse the great Bard. The English language no longer belongs to one culture or one nation. The English language belongs to everyone who speaks it, across many cultures and nations, equally. Therefore, the next Shakespeare, whoever they are, can live and write, anywhere.

Poets will compete in the Shakespeare's Pen Contests. The winners will be published in an online collection. One poem and poet will be chosen as overall winner.

Shakespeare's Pen is a spotlight that shines on a country's poets. The winning poet, like Arthur pulling Excalibur out of the rock, claims the right to wield the spotlight of Shakespeare's Pen. Along with gaining the personal honour of wielding Shakespeare's Pen, the winning poet claims the Shakespeare's Pen Magazine for their country, exclusively, for a full calendar year. Thus, the Wielder of Shakespeare's Pen provides a service to their nation by creating actual publishing opportunities, exclusively for poets in their home country.

Shakespeare's Pen Contests – September 15th, 2024

Return to this web page on September 15th, 2024 to get more information and participate in the Shakespeare's Pen Contests. These contests will determine which country's poets will be awarded the exclusive opportunity to be published in Shakespeare's Pen Magazine in 2026, the first year of publication.

Visit the Wax Poetry and Art Submissions Page regularly for updates on the Poetry World Cup and Shakespeare's Pen.
