Nalanda Buddhist Institute (NBI), also known locally as Daley Goenpa or Dalida, is a Buddhist monastic school (shedra) in the western part of the Punakha District (Dzongkhag) in Bhutan. It is below Talo Monastery and above Walakha, about a 25-35 minutes drive from the main highway to Punakha. The name Nalanda means “insatiable giving”.

December 17 is an important day in the history of Bhutan. It marks the Coronation day of Druk Gyalpo Ugyen Wangchuck who became the first King of Bhutan in 1907. It was on this day, the Hereditary Monarchy was established and the country came under Wangchuck Dynasty.

December 17 today is celebrated throughout the country as an auspicious and special day. On this occasion of great importance, the whole nation comes together in grand celebration of the day. The commemoration of this day serves to remind the citizens of the country about the profound sacrifices of the benevolent forefathers, who worked tirelessly for the well being of the country and its people. The day allows the fellow countrymen to express their gratitude to those noble generations who gifted a strong, sovereign nation to them.

The history dates back to 1616 when Zhabdrung visited the country. Bhutan was unified by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who reigned for 35 years. The death of Zhabdrung in 1651 was followed by 225 years of instability in the country. The political vacuum created during the early 1900s filled with internal conflicts and civil war, was blessing in disguise for Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck. It was in 1906 when Drungpa Ugyen Dorji submitted a petition to the Lhengye Zhungtshog stating that the Dual System of the Government of the time has failed to bring peace and harmony in the country. It was then the first Druk Gyalpo was crowned. The monarchy brought peace, unity and prosperity in the country that had previously experienced years of internal and external threat.

The nation building process and all the major changes in the country has been initiated from the throne. The reunification of the country, the introduction of the tax reforms, introducing modern education and ending the state of isolation by making international relationship are among the many changes that have shaped Bhutan as a sovereign nation. The day is celebrated only once in a year where Bhutanese people gather together to pay tribute to the monarchs that ruled our country in extraordinary manner and also to offer prayers forever lasting peace and prosperity.

Recently, I met a 27-year-old woman who has a four-year-old son. She works in a café, and makes Nu. 12,500 a month. Her house rent is Nu. 7,750. She is her family’s sole breadwinner. I was dismayed to hear about her struggles supporting her family and trying to make ends meet.

A Tower for Milarepa in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
Location: 10-storey Sangay Minjurling Lhakhang at Ramitey in Phuentsholing, Chukha, Southern Bhutan.

Sangye Migyur Ling Lhakhang is the11th-century of Bhutanese Karma Kagyu master Lama Kelzang. It is a replica of an 11th century structure erected by the Tibetan medieval poet-yogi Milarepa, famous for his journey from revenge-motivated witchcraft to enlightenment. Thpractisinges that an unenlightened Milarepa, who desperately wanted to atone for practicing black magic to kill his mother’s enemies, sought out the translator Marpa to learn Buddhism. But the latter refused to teach him until he single-handedly built (and on Marpa’s orders) destroyed three towers, the fourth and final one being the original nine-story sekargutok at Lhodrag

It is the third oldest dzong in the country after the Semtokha and Punakha dzongs, and played a significant role in Zhabdrung's efforts to unite the country.

The dzong has experienced disasters before. In 1837, the dzong was destroyed by a major fire and later rebuilt.During the time of Lam Neten Pelden Singye, the dzong was also damaged by a severe earthquake in 1897.

1638 - Built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Wangduephodrang Dzong is the third oldest Dzong in Bhutan
1639 - Construction completed
1837 - Dzong destroyed by a major fire
1897 - Damaged by earthquake
2011 - Constructed separate living quarters for monks. Minor damages by earthquake
2012 - Renovation began with GoI funding
2012 - Wangduephodrang dzong was razed to the ground in a fire

♥Punakha dzong♥
It is the most essential Dzong in Bhutanese history. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan from 1637 to 1907, and the first national assembly was hosted here in 1953. It is the second oldest and second-largest dzong in all of Bhutan and one of the most majestic and famous structures in the country.

Who was the Buddha Shakyamuni?

Although there are various Buddhas – such as Maitreya, the Future Buddha, or Amitabha, the Pure Land Buddha – it is the Buddha Shakyamuni that we mean when we say “the Buddha.”
Shakyamuni Buddha was, historically, a spiritual master who lived and taught in modern day India and Nepal in either the 6th or 5th century BCE, and who founded Buddhism. The name Buddha means the “awakened” or “enlightened” one, and after his own awakening, Shakyamuni taught a path by which others might also be awakened to the true nature of reality, and freed from suffering.
