I believe the good deeds will come back to us if we help others. When I was a child, once during Eid-ul-Azha the cow we bought got agitated in the middle of the road. I was too shocked to react and I let go of it. Out of nowhere, a man who was supposedly living in the streets appeared and helped me out to take the cow home. After reaching home, he requested something for him to wear and I told him to wait for a while. He became so happy and prayed for my successful future. After that, when I came back with a shirt, he was gone. This story gave me a thought about how people come into lives, they help and move away without any expectations.

I was connected to social work through some organizations in my area from a very young age. I officially started my volunteering journey in 2019. From then, I have been working for many volunteering organizations. We work on helping the young children and people who use narcotics by providing them pigeons. So that they can pivot their lifestyle with a productive one; by raising a pigeon farm. This also helps people financially. A volunteer needs to be ready all the time to work for others. So, we work on food and medicine distribution for people in a pinch.

'Ramadan Iftar distribution' event is my most memorable experience till now. The joy in the air and the true meaning of sacrifice you find there, will bring peace and blessings to your life. We prepare the food, package them and distribute among others. I can't describe my joy seeing the happy faces and their eyes full of admiration. Through such events, I got a chance to work with the DC at a relief distribution project. People were doubting my ability to work on such a big project at a young age. But I had belief in myself and my work. My work spoke for me again.

People don't realize how much a volunteer has to work to reach a certain position. In fact, they make fun of their sacrifices. But I kept working. Today I see them change, they appreciate and join vows with our works. At the same time I was very lucky to have a supportive family who has always supported me financially and mentally. My sister has always inspired me to work for society collaboratively. So during Eid-e-Miladunnabi we and the kids would raise money and arrange small programs to share the joy with the society.

Volunteering has changed me, given me the courage to speak in public. Organization and leadership skills also came hand in hand. I am now leading a team of 20 people. I used to think that the youth were not interested in social work. As my friends were not that interested in volunteering. They used to ignore my calls. But after working through so many organizations I see a large number of youth are jumping daily into this noble work. They are precious findings of mine.

Volunteering is tough, and not everyone will understand it’s significance. If you can empathize with other people's situations you will definitely find it’s glory. As I believe, the reward will come through gratitude and appreciation.

This versatile man is Sharier Alam Tawsif currently studying LLB at Chittagong Independent University. He is connected with various volunteering platforms and working tremendously in humanitarian sites.
