বঙ্গবন্ধু এমন একজন মানুষ ছিলেন, যিনি লক্ষ্য পূরণে খুব ধীর-স্থির ও চৌকস ছিলেন। এই মানুষটির দৃঢ় মনোভাবের কারণে পা কি স্তা নি শাসকরা পর্যন্ত তাকে মারাত্মক সমীহ করত। ২৪ ঘণ্টা গোয়েন্দা নজরদারির মধ্যে থেকেও তিনি 'বাঙালির মুক্তির সনদ' ৬ দফা বাস্তবায়নে সারাদেশে জনমত সৃষ্টি করতে পেরেছিলেন।

১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ শে মার্চ রাতেও পাকিস্তানি সামরিক বাহিনীর সদস্যরা হামলা করেছিল ধানমন্ডির ৩২ নম্বর সড়কের বাসায় - সেদিনও বীরদর্পে তাদের সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে বঙ্গবন্ধু বলেছিলেন - "স্টপ শ্যুটিং"! পাকিস্তানিরা ভড়কে গিয়েছিল সেই মহান নেতার ব্যক্তিত্বের কাছে।

৭১-এর ডিসেম্বরে বিজয় অর্জনের পর, বঙ্গবন্ধু মাত্র সাড়ে তিন বছরে বাংলাদেশকে আবারো গড়ে তুলেছিলেন। একদিকে প্রায় শূন্য ব্যাংক রিজার্ভ, অন্যদিকে ভাঙাচোরা রাস্তা - ব্রিজ - কালভার্ট-বাড়িঘর। সেই পরিস্থিতিতে তরুণদের, মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের কাজে লাগিয়ে বঙ্গবন্ধু সবকিছু পুনর্গঠিত করেছিলেন। চালু করে ফেলেছিলেন কলকারখানাগুলো। আন্তর্জাতিক মহলের প্রায় সব বড় ফোরামে নতুন রাষ্ট্রকে যুক্ত করেছিলেন তিনি - জাতিসংঘ, ওআইসি, কমনওয়েলথ সবাই বাংলাদেশকে সাদরে গ্রহণ করেছিল এই মহান নেতার ক্যারিশমায়। তিনি যখনই সব প্রতিকূল পরিবেশ অতিক্রম করে দেশকে এগিয়ে নিচ্ছিলেন, দেশের প্রবৃদ্ধির হার তখন ১১% এর ওপরে, ঠিক তখনই পুরনো শত্রুরা এক হলো, প্রতিশোধ নিতে চাইলো ১৯৭১-এর পরাজয়ের। ৭১-এর পরাজিত দেশীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক শক্তি ঘাতকদের সাহস দিলো, পালানোর পথ করে দিলো, বাংলাদেশ স্বৈরাচারের কবলে পতিত হলো।

জাতির পিতার মৃত্যুর পর ধ্বংস হয়ে গেলো অসাম্প্রদায়িক বাংলাদেশের স্বপ্ন। শুধু জনরোষের ভয়েই দেশকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে কট্টর ইসলামিক রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে ঘোষণা করতে পারল না উগ্রবাদীরা।

১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট, সেই ৩২ নম্বরের বাড়িতে ভোরের আজানের কিছু আগেই হামলা করেছিল বর্বর ঘাতকরা। বাংলার স্বাধীনতার অন্যতম প্রতীক ধানমণ্ডির ৩২ নম্বর ভেসে গেলো রক্তে। বাংলার মানুষকে ভালোবাসার নির্মম প্রতিদান দিলো বেঈমান মোশতাক-জিয়া এবং দলছুট মেজরদের খুনি চক্র।

জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও তাঁর পরিবারের সকল শহীদদের প্রতি বিনম্র শ্রদ্ধা জানাই।

Bangabandhu was revered for his strong personality and a steely resolve to stand for the cause of his people. Fearful of Bangabandhu’s tenacity, Pakistan army always kept tabs on his movement. Defying Pakistan Army’s round the clock surveillance, Bangabandhu shored up public support across the country for his six point demand, considered as our charter of freedom.

As Pakistan army launched infamous operation searchlight on unarmed civilians on March 25, their prime target was the Dhanmondi residence of Bangabandhu. As a group of soldiers stormed his house, a defiant Bangabandhu shouted at them “stop gun fire”, a call that clearly testifies his courage.

After Bangladesh earned freedom, Bangabandhu embarked on a mission to rebuild a war torn country, left devastated by Pak army. But the mission was beset with insurmountable challenges. He had to start from scratch—with almost no reserve to every roads left in battered condition. But at the call of the charismatic leader, youths and war heroes took part in the pursuit to rebuild their motherland. On diplomatic front, Bangabandhu’s growing international stature led his country welcomed by a number of international bodies including UN, OIC and Commonwealth.

In a span of three years the growth rate reached 11%, braving all the odds, a quarter that opposed the country’s independence, teamed up to ruin the progress. A cabal comprising national and international forces, that attempted to stop the birth of the country, indulged in a conspiracy that resulted in the brutal massacre of Bangabandhu and 19 of his family members on August 15, 1975.

Following that gruesome killing, subsequent rulers embraced fundamentalist forces, putting an end to the pledge of secular Bangladesh, a dream that the founding father promised for his people.

The assassins gunned down the family members inside the Dhanmondi residence, which stands as a testimony to all the key events in the run up to the 1971 liberation war. The residence turned into a pool of blood. Khandakar Moshtaq and General Ziaur Rahman are among those who masterminded the massacre.
