Throwback to a 2016 YouTube challenge I did with a few creators, the “dramatic log cut challenge”. This was a promo picture I used for the launch. The goal was to take a simple task, cutting a log, and make it as dramatic as possible. The other 3 were Trustin Timber, William Walker and Cactus! Workshop. It was a lot of fun, really enjoyed these projects that were overly creative!

Yup, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got here.

It all started when I quit my day job of 16 years to follow my passion. Today is my official first day as a full time woodworker / content creator. 10 January 2024 is the day I’ve been waiting for for years.

Now I just have to make the most of it.

Eucalypt hardwood like this used to be my enemy. This particular timber is poplar gum and even with a spiral head it still has some tear out when coming off the machines. I could never understand why, or HOW people worked with it.

After years of getting it wrong I eventually bought a drum sander and that changed my work flow entirely when working with gums. Now everything goes through the drum (it only ever has a 60 grit belt on) right after jointing/thicknessing.

But it also taught me the importance of sanding. When you start woodworking, most often with pine, a few quick swipes of a sander and you’re done. But you HAVE to spend more time with hard woods. Like, a lot more time. The pay off is a timber that actually polishes!

Now excuse me while I spend the rest of the day running this through my drum sander 😰

I’ve been slowly building up a library of different species of wood. Partly for my own enjoyment but also to have a collection of material if I want to do small jobs (bow ties, inlays, etc). Anyone got something rare I should be adding?

First time working with poplar gum/white gum and I’m really excited to see how it finishes. The grain is chaotic but it’s “dusty” so it goes well on the machines. I reckon sanding up to 240 and some oil and this’ll look amazing!
