Tasmania is the epicentre of Australian wooden boat building. As the home of what is considered the world’s finest boat building timbers, Huon Pine, Tassie has a rich heritage of boat building which began in the early years of colonisation and survives to this day.
This enthusiasm for all things wooden boat comes together in Tasmania every two years with the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. Tasmania’s biggest single cultural event, the AWBF attracts 60,000 visitors, and presents 550 vessels on show, celebrating its 30th edition in 2024, running 7 to 10 February.

Racing was cancelled on the opening day of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Christchurch, due to “prolonged mammal activity” on the racecourse for the duration of the race window.
SailGP Managing Director Andrew Thompson said: “It was a really challenging day today and disappointing for the capacity crowd that turned out. We have a marine mammal plan and that plan was in place and unfortunately it meant we couldn’t sail today.”

Racing is scheduled to begin again Sunday 24 March from 1pm local time.

The Coral Sea Marina provided a great base for Clipper Race Crew to explore the tropical paradise. Fresh local prawns, washed down with local beers greeted the teams on arrival setting the tone for a chilled stopover.
