Review: ‘I Would Leave Me If I Could’ by Halsey (She/They).
✨
An raw exploration of their personal experiences and emotions; Halsey’s collection of poetry is both beautiful and heartbreaking. The poetry is very much a stream of consciousness and features an unreliable sense of time in that she frequently navigates back and forth in her life experiences. Halsey guides you down memory lane, reliving their experiences on such an intimate level that it almost feels intrusive to know all these things about her; of her relationship with herself, her family and past lovers.
✨
Halsey’s poetry invites you into her mind, allowing you to witness the manic highs and depressive lows she experiences with her bipolar disorder. From the magic of life as a child prior to her awareness of her family’s lack of wealth, to her painful experiences with sexual assault, she manages to encapsulate her honest life’s journey all the while portraying life as a woman in the modern day. Halsey’s expression through words has been a constant in how she has dealt with people and events in her life; “Once you’ve put someone down on paper, you’ve reduced them to a character, and they no longer have the power that they do in real life.”
✨
Whether or not you are a fan of Halsey and her music, her poetry exposes so many facets of life that you will not walk away from the book untouched or unprovoked. Her words invite reflection and inspire you into achieving your passions; that no matter how difficult your life’s hardships are or how humble your beginnings, you can achieve great things.

Set the mood:
✨
Time of day: Late afternoon when you can unwind without the distractions of work or others around you.
☀️
Snacks to pair: Fresh fruit; her use of imagery with fruity metaphors will have you craving fresh watermelon or berries. The sweet flavours will also balance out the sometimes bitter themes she covers in her poems.
🍉
Drinks to pair: A mimosa, or strawberry daiquiri. For something non-alcoholic, a fruity iced tea or homemade lemonade.
