Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October highlights how crucial research is in this area, with breast cancer being the second most commonly diagnosed in Australia.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has a vision for Zero Deaths from breast cancer, one only achievable by funding research to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how this cancer originates, grows and spreads.

According to the NBCF every year, over 21,000 people in Australia (including around 200 men) will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The original five-year survival rate has increased from 76% to 92% (and continues to rise) since 1994 thanks to leading breast cancer researchers.

World Narcolepsy Day raises awareness about this incurable and often misdiagnosed chronic neurological disorder that impairs the brain's ability to regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

Symptoms of the disorder include excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy - episodes of muscle weakness often caused by strong emotions - hallucinations, disturbed and fragmented night time sleep often with vivid dreaming.

Separated into two types, there is Type 1 (with cataplexy) which is caused by a lack of the brain chemical hypocretin that regulates our sleep cycles and rapid eye movement (REM), and Type 2 (without cataplexy).

Narcolepsy is diagnosed with clinical testing with a sleep physician, and whilst not curable, can be managed often with medication, regular napping and lifestyle changes.

Some people with dementia lead active and fulfilling lives for many years after their diagnosis... In Australia, more than 421,000 people live with dementia. But researchers around the world are working on new treatments".
