From The Weekend Australian, 9-10 December 2023, by Paul Kelly:

“…There is now a sharp rift between the Albanese government and the Coalition over the response to anti-Semitism. In Peter Dutton’s address to the Rabbinical Council of NSW last Monday, the Opposition Leader argued Australia was experiencing the “anti-Semitic rot” now spreading across many nations. He said: “Key leaders have been found wanting in providing strong support for Israel and clear-cut condemnations of anti-Semitism.” The legacy was a “moral fog” – a good description of Australia today.

Dutton said while he and Anthony Albanese had supported the Jewish community at the October 22 opening of the Melbourne Holocaust Museum, he found himself disagreeing with the Prime Minister over the extent of anti-Semitism. Contrary to Albanese’s promise, anti-Semitism “has found footholds in our country and very significant ones”. Dutton argued there was a cycle of weakness at work, saying: “If perpetrators are not held accountable, then would-be perpetrators are not deterred.”

Dutton complains about the failure of police to arrest protesters at the Crowne Plaza in Melbourne on November 29 when relatives of Jewish people who had been murdered and victimised – visiting Australia in a delegation – were confronted by protesters and forced to retreat to a police station for safety.

Politicians from both sides condemned the behaviour...

… the left is making a fatal moral mistake in embracing the Palestinian cause when it cannot disentangle that cause from the violence intrinsic to the identity and meaning of Hamas as seen in its assault of October 7….”

The Gaza war is undermining support for the long-enshrined two-state solution – an Israeli and Palestinian nation side-by-side – the upshot being a more dangerous Middle East and a consequential tide of anti-Israel sentiment and anti-Semitism in Western nations including Australia.

“…Many ask about the destruction in Gaza. Hamas is the address. Sinwar is the address. Our forces find in nearly every building and house weapons and in many houses terrorists, and engage them in combat.
We understand that part of their method is the weapons left in the houses. A terrorist arrives in civilian clothing and conducts combat from there. Striking them requires significant use of fire, both to target the enemy but also to, of course, protect our forces. Therefore the forces operate powerfully, while making big efforts to mitigate as much as possible harm to civilians.
The military pressure we are applying and have applied in recent weeks is severely damaging Hamas, advancing the achievement of all the war’s objectives, with the top priority of returning all the hostages home….”

"...By 8am on Saturday morning, Arabs began to gather around the Jewish community. Armed with clubs, knives and axes, the mobs prepared to attack. Women and children threw stones while men ransacked Jewish houses and destroyed Jewish property.
..Jews of all ages were attacked at random – men, women and children alike were the targets of the fury of the Arab mob. Women were r***d, children were bludgeoned to death, and men stabbed and mutilated.
.. Thousands of Arabs descended ...shouting “Kill the Jews!” in Arabic.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the following remarks this evening, at his press conference with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Minister Benny Gantz, at the Kirya in Tel Aviv:

"Citizens of Israel, good evening.
This week we will light the first candle of Chanukah. Our soldiers will bring light to the darkness, in the alleyways of Gaza, in the ruins of Sajaiya, in the terrorist lairs in Khan Yunis. The lights together, as a great light, will cleave the darkness.

Our soldiers are the heirs of the Maccabees. Today, as then, they are fighting with bravery, utmost heroism and determination. And today, like then, we will pray together for their well-being. We will pray together for peace in our land: 'To Your people Israel, you worked a great salvation.'

Citizens of Israel, today, I and my colleagues in the War Cabinet met with the families of the hostages – those whom we have already succeeded in returning home and those for whom we are doing everything to return. I heard heartbreaking stories. I heard about thirst, about hunger, about mental and physical abuse, about young children who are still whispering out of fear, about the great darkness in which their loved ones are being held.

I heard, as you have, about the sexual abuse and r**es of unparalleled brutality. But I must say that up until a few days ago, I did not hear the human rights organizations. I did not hear the women's organizations. I did not hear the UN. I did not hear them crying out. And I say to them: 'Where are you? You are being silent because they are Jewish women?' I want to say this in a language that everyone understands:

I say to the women's rights organizations, to the human rights organizations, you've heard of the r**e of Israeli women, horrible atrocities, sexual mutilation.

Where the hell are you? I expect all civilized leaders, governments, nations, to speak up against this atrocity.

I fully share the deep concern of the families whose loved ones are still being held in Gaza. I understand the uncertainty. I understand the unbearable difficulty. I told the families that we will spare no effort to return their loved ones. Bringing all of our hostages home is one of the three main goals that we determined for the war, and these goals reinforce each other.

We check every piece of information. I want you to know that there is a vast intelligence effort dealing only with this, around the clock. We are working prudently and responsibly. We are working to bring all of our hostages home safely. And I say all of them – male and female soldiers, male and female civilians, young and old, everyone, without exception. In every decision, the return of the hostages stands before our eyes, and we are on the right path.

Today I saw little Emilia Aloni, six years old, returning to kindergarten. The teacher hugged her. Her friends hugged her. For one moment in these dark days, the heart filled with joy – and these days this is something. We succeeded in returning home 110 hostages by a combination of a ground incursion of unprecedented strength and a continuous diplomatic effort. And I tell you – this is the only way to also return the hostages who are still in Hamas captivity, and we are committed to doing so.

Hamas tried to break us up – we will break it up. Many of the murderers were from the Sajaiya Battalion, they broke through the fence, went to nearby communities and perpetrated these atrocities. Therefore, at the start of the week, we eliminated the commander of the Sajaiya Battalion, who oversaw many of the horrific acts on October 7th as well as many other acts of murder. As of now, we have eliminated around half of Hamas's battalion commanders. We are settling accounts with all those who abducted, with all those who were involved, and with all those who murdered, massacred, r***d and burned the daughters and sons of our people. We will neither forgive nor forget.

We have ordered the IDF to continue the war. Our soldiers are expanding the ground operation against Hamas throughout the Gaza Strip, including in the southern Gaza Strip. Tonight we operated there with great force. The ground shook in Khan Yunis and Jebalya. We have encircled them both. There is no place we cannot reach. We took control of the base of Hamas General Security. Our brave soldiers are fighting the murderers with great force. They are conducting face-to-face battles. They are eliminating many terrorists around the clock. In every battle, in every battle, we have the upper hand. We are fighting until the end, until absolute victory.

Our fighting men and women are the embodiment of the resilience and determination of the entire nation. But all of this has an unbearable price. Every loss is heart-rending. Ben Sussman fell this week in the battles in Gaza. Ben was a soldier in the combat engineers. Ben was a hero of Israel, the salt of the earth, an outstanding athlete. He was a soldier with every fiber of his being. Four friends from his school – Himmelfarb High School in Jerusalem – fell together with Ben. We also lost Aner Shapira, a Nahal Brigade soldier who saved the lives of many at Reim after he threw back seven grenades. To our sorrow, we also lost his comrades Ariel Reich, an armored corps officer, Shachar Friedman, a paratrooper, and Dvir Barzani, also a paratrooper.

This evening I say to the families of Ben, Aner, Ariel, Shachar and Dvir, and I tell the dear families of every one of our fallen heroes: Your loved ones, our loved ones, did not fall in vain. We will fight together, we will be victorious, we will destroy Hamas.

We will fight until victory, until we achieve all of our goals: Returning all of the hostages, eliminating Hamas and ensuring that Gaza never again constitutes a threat to Israel. We will ensure that there will be no element there that supports terrorism, educates for terrorism, and finances terrorism and the terrorists' families.

I want to say an additional word about 'the day after Hamas': Gaza must be demilitarized. And in order for Gaza to be demilitarized, there is only one force that can see to this demilitarization – and that force is the IDF. No international force can be responsible for this. We have seen what has happened in other places where they brought in international forces for the goal of demilitarization. I am not prepared to close my eyes and accept any other arrangement. I again call on the civilian population in Gaza to leave the areas in which we are fighting Hamas.

I say here to our friends in the world who are pressing for a quick end to the war: Our only way to end the war, and end it quickly, is to apply crushing pressure against Hamas – and destroy it. If our friends want to help shorten the war, which is also their war against the barbarism that threatens to engulf the world, they simply need to stand steadfast alongside us.

And I say to them in English and in every language:

Stand with us.
Stand with Israel.
Stand with civilization!

Citizens of Israel, on my many visits in the field, I meet our heroic fighting men and women from the IDF, the ISA and the police. One of the soldiers, named Ariel, from the armored corps, spoke to me from atop his tank inside Gaza. In his tank, as in others in the field, are religious and secular, Jews and non-Jews, right-wingers and left-wingers. They are all fighting together. They are all imbued with a great spirit – of unity, comradeship and victory.

At the start of Chanukah, let us recall the heroism of the Maccabees then and the Maccabees of our time. Thanks to them, and with G-d's help, together we will win."

From WSJ, 3 December 2023, by Lance Morrow:

…Although it seems grotesque to say so, the casualties in Gaza have been relatively light by neighborhood standards. More than 300,000 of Saddam Hussein’s own people ended up dead or missing during his 24-year rule. In Syria under the regime of the Assads, father and son, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed and nearly 13 million people—more than half the country’s prewar population—have been turned out into the world as refugees.

Students at Harvard and Columbia don’t protest the region’s routine inhumanities. They do so only when there are Jews around to blame and to hate. It’s the Israelis’ Jewishness that brings the demonstrators out. This isn’t “a new antisemitism.” Antisemitism is never new. It’s an ancient beast that awakens from time to time and exhales such filth as “Gas the Jews” and “Hitler was right.”

This isn’t the midcentury ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ variety. It’s the return of pure hatred of the Jews.

An IDF fighter jet struck and eliminated Haitham Khuwajari, the Commander of Hamas’ Shati Battalion. Under his command, Hamas terrorists carried out raids into Israeli territory on October 7th during the invasion and massacre in southern Israel. Khuwajari also secured Hamas terrorist activity in the Shifa Hospital and was in command of Hamas’ forces fighting against IDF soldiers in the Shati area. He was also responsible for carrying out numerous acts of terror against Israelis.

From The Australian, 30 November 2023, by "The Mocker":

You will be much relieved to learn the Albanese government, at least according to its members, is doing absolutely everything possible to ensure your safety.

“Safety of the community has been and remains the utmost priority of this government,” says Immigration Minister Andrew Giles.

Likewise, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus: “Our first commitment is for the safety of Australians”.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles: “Community safety is front and centre in … every action that we are taking here”.

And not only is keeping Australians safe foremost in the mind of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese: it is his government’s “first, second and third priority”. Yes, I think we can agree there is no doubt the government’s top priority, self-interest aside, is to repeat incessantly this talking point.

As part of its ‘keeping Australians safe’ strategy, the government has decided to throw open the doors to hundreds of Palestinians. It began approving the first of the 860 visas in question on October 7, but we did not learn of this until last week. We can only assume the government intended keeping us safe by keeping us in the dark.

Admittedly the Gaza Strip is a haven for terrorists and their enablers, who last month conducted the largest targeted massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. But as the supercilious Wong reminded us last week during an interview with Sky News presenter Peter Stefanovic, “Just as not everybody from Afghanistan is linked with the Taliban, not everybody who is Palestinian is a member of a terrorist organisation.”

Wong is right, of course. According to a survey published this month by the Arab World for Research and Development, only 75 per cent of Palestinians said they were either ‘extremely support[ive]’ or ‘somewhat support[ive] when asked ‘How much do you support the military operation carried out by the Palestinian resistance led by Hamas on October 7th?’ And 74.7 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea”. Applying those figures to the 860 Palestinians that Labor has invited to stay, over 640 condone Hamas’s methods and long for the destruction of Israel.

Worry not though, for Wong assures us that “all appropriate security checks, character checks and identity checks have been undertaken”. When Stefanovic put to Wong that the applicants could have lied regarding links to or support for Hamas, her response said much about this government’s ability to keep Australians safe. “In relation to any visa application, it’s an offence to give false information to authorities,” she said.

There you have it. Hamas is synonymous with terrorism and mass murder, including that of women and children; r**e and kidnapping, but there are some things even its members and their sympathisers will baulk at doing. Lie on a visa application? Not on your nelly, they say. And as you can tell from the increasing number of security guards outside synagogues in this country, there has never been a safer time to be a Jewish-Australian.

Pressed by journalists last week on the integrity of this process, Albanese’s repeated assertions that everything was tickety-boo were belied by his agitated manner. “[They] are the same security checks that are in place for people, for Australians that have been in place, this regime, for a long period of time,” he insisted.

A long period of time? Presumably then Albanese is referring to same checks originally conducted on the 141 unlawful non-citizens released from detention this month. Among them were murderers, rapists, paedophiles and other undesirables, yet some of them had been issued visas upon coming to Australia. Forgive me for having no confidence in this process.

Albanese would also have us believe the responsible agencies completed exhaustive checks for 860 people in a warzone in just six weeks. How this was supposedly accomplished is a mystery. The region’s public institutions are corrupt and unreliable, record-keeping is haphazard, and we have no diplomatic presence in the region. It would be impossible to confirm the identity of the applicants in that timeframe, let alone conduct the necessary character and security checks.

Was it done by Zoom? I can just picture it. “Now remember, Fahad, pinky promise. You have never engaged in terrorist activities?” Or “Salman, you say your Qassam rocket launcher is used only to ward off aggressive plovers, correct?” Or “So just to clarify, Mrs Hamouda, your eldest son was a su***de bomber, your second son is serving time in an Israeli jail for murder, but your youngest boy, Hassan, aspires to be a pastry chef?”

Equally laughable is Albanese’s insistence the visas in question are “not permanent” and only “temporary”. Granted, that category of visa allows for a maximum stay of 12 months in Australia, but you can bet the claims for asylum will swiftly follow. As The Australian reported in August, the number of asylum claims have surged since Labor assumed government. Of the 75,000 unsuccessful asylum-seekers in Australia in July, only 12 were deported that month.

As for those who point out many of the visa holders in question are young children and thus not instilled with Hamas propaganda, dream on. Undoubtedly, many of the atrocities of last month were committed by those who grew up watching children’s shows such as Tomorrow’s Pioneers. It featured characters such as Nahoul the friendly bumblebee, who declared, ”We will liberate Al-Aqsa from the filth of the criminal Jews. We will go on jihad when we grow up.”

Then there was Assoud, a Bugs Bunny-like character who tells children, “I will finish off the Jews and eat them,” and Nassur, a bear, who says of Israelis, “We want to slaughter them so they will be expelled from our land.”...

You will be much relieved to learn the Albanese government, at least according to its members, is doing absolutely everything possible to ensure your safety.

Subject: Stop neo-Nazi behaviour in our nation
Importance: High

Dear Senator Dodson, Senator Sterle, Hon Mr Patrick Gorman MP, Hon Mr Matt Keogh MP, Hon Ms Madelaine King MP, and Mr Sam Lim MP,

We’re appalled and dismayed by reports that a group of anti-Israel agitators invaded the Melbourne hotel of a group of five Israeli delegates whose family and friends were killed or taken hostage by brutal terrorists from Gaza on October 7.

Approximately twenty people stormed the hotel lobby waving flags and signs at about 10pm, wearing masks, and placed fake babies covered in fake blood on the hotel floor. These Neo-Nazi thugs clearly intended to intimidate traumatised Israeli delegates who came to Australia to share their fear and trauma with us. The Israeli delegates were forced to hide.

Our community is alarmed and frightened. We’re living in a nightmare…. can’t believe that this can happen in Australia.

Victoria Police said the group was “quickly moved on”. Why were they not arrested??

Why aren’t our Police taking decisive, incontrovertible action against such vile, cruel intimidation of people whose loved ones have been killed, tortured, mutilated, or kidnapped??

Please urgently and without delay, provide us with your assurance that the government will take immediate action to ensure that such hateful, invasive intimidation is unequivocally banned, that our legal enforcement agencies will unhesitatingly arrest and prosecute the perpetrators; and that Jews can feel safe in Australia.

Regards
Steve Lieblich, Vice President

PEACE will be possible when the Palestinian Arabs, who elected Hamas and celebrate its crimes, change their mindset: when, instead of blaming Jews for all their problems and using the copious international aid to perpetuate unwarranted hatred from generation to generation and to fund terrorism, they use it to build a civil society that lives peacefully and product-fully with its Jewish neighbours.
