The hunt for Australia's most elusive bird has taken an explosive twist, with the largest known population discovery in WA's remote Pilbara by a team of Indigenous rangers and scientists.

The critically endangered night parrot, which was once plentiful among the old growth spinifex of inland Australia, was thought to be extinct for almost 100 years after being last sighted in 1912.

The new Fitzroy River Bridge has been awarded WA Project of the Year at the WA Engineering Excellence Awards.

The awards panel called the project "a shining example of engineering excellence".

"Completed in just 11 months, the project demonstrates innovative solutions, rapid construction, and the effective management of complex challenges," it read.
