Each Monday evening throughout summer, The Listening Post host Tony Howes welcomes you to the Summer Repeat Discussions led by our resident Military Historian, Nigel Rogers.

This Monday, Nigel and The Listening Post give you the repeat discussion concerning The Battle of Denmark Strait and the sinking of HMS Hood; a particularly momentous event of World War 2, with a Western Australian link, as you will hear. Just remember that the interview was first heard in May, 2021 – so any mention of anniversaries and the like, refer to that period.

On The Listening Post Bandstand is The Band of the Royal Swedish Air Force, directed by Jerker Johannson. The Band not only has its musical duties with the Swedish Air Force, but is responsible for concerts in its city of residence, Gothenburg. Music will also be heard from a little closer to home; and includes the words of Henry Lawson, the composition of Bruce Woodley, and the voice of Judith Durham and the Seekers.

"This Week in Our Military History" is updated for tonight's broadcast; and the classic comedy includes the wit of 'Flanders and Swann'.

Your presenter is Tony Howes OAM, assisted by Research Officer Allan Downs OAM.

How’do To a Country Town ‘

The history of Norseman which is (depending on which route you take between 633km to 722km from perth) stems from the exploration of the South Coast by Edward John Eyre during the 1840’s, and the initial surveying of Western Australia by John Septemus Roe who named the “Dundas Hills” in 1848. Flash forward to the late 1870’s where the Southern Area of Australia was at last connected to the rest of its country upon the completion of the Overland Telegraph Line between Albany and Adelaide. In August 1894, Lawrence Sinclair, his brother George Sinclair, and Jack Alsopp discovered a rich gold reef which Sinclair named after his horse, Hardy Norseman. The family originally came from the Shetland Isles in December 1863. Laurie's brother James was working in Esperance as the Post and Telegraphist Master. In January 1895 the mining warden asked the Government to declare a townsite for the 200 or so miners who had arrived. It was gazetted on 22 May.

The year 1895 saw the first Post Office, Bank and Doctor arrive in town. The Doctor operating in a tent for a hospital. The first Newspaper was also printed in October of this year and followed in January by “The Norseman Pioneer”. The two joined together in 1899 and came out as “The Norseman Times” which circulated bi-weekly. By 1899 there were three churches, sporting facilities, five hotels and a carriage mail service known by “Cobb and Co Coaches”. Water was supplied to the town by condensing lake water derived from the surrounding salt lakes. Water was also drawn from surrounding rocks situated north, west and east of the town until 1899 when a reservoir was constructed. Once it was the second-richest goldfield in Western Australia, next to the Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie. It is claimed that since 1892, over 100 tonnes of gold have been extracted from the area. The Norseman Gold Mine is Australia's longest continuously running gold mining operation.[6] As of 2006, it had been in operation for more than 65 years, producing in excess of 5.5 million ounces of gold in that time.

The traditional owners of the area new Norsman as Jimberlana - Ngadju is a language of the southern Goldfields region of Western Australia. There are very few speakers and these people are now spread across the Kalgoorlie region through to Esperance. Ngadju is centred around Norseman and east toward Balladonia. The traditional owners of the area new Norseman as Jimberlana. . The Ngadju people have lived on this land for perhaps as long as 50,000 years, living a simple lifestyle as hunter gatherers.

Each Monday evening throughout summer, The Listening Post host Tony Howes welcomes you to the Summer Repeat Discussions led by our resident Military Historian, Nigel Rogers. For this repeat discussion, Nigel and “The Listening Post”, will take you on a journey to South America and back in time to the very beginning of the Second World War. To the true story that is “The Battle of the River Plate”. Nigel will speak of much more than just that the Battle was fought in the South Atlantic on 13 December 1939 as the first naval battle of the Second World War.There is so much more you will hear about tonight - and our New Zealand cousins will be given their significant place in the history of this Battle.

In keeping with the nautical emphasis in this evening programme, as when this broadcast was first aired back early in 2021, on The Listening Post Bandstand will be one of the world’s finest military music makers: the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines. Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Grace OBE,directs tonight's performances. Other music picks up the nautical theme; and the light relief in the comedy segment rounds up the evening.
Your presenter is Tony Howes OAM, assisted by Research Officer Allan Downs OAM.

With thanks to the Shire of Leonora’s web site

Leonora is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located 833 kilometres (518 mi) northeast of the state capital, Perth, and 237 kilometres (147 mi) north of the city of Kalgoorlie. In 1869 explorer John Forrest and party, in search of the lost Leichardt Expedition, made camp near a hill and named it Mount Leonora. Twenty five years on, prospectors moved through the area and by 1896 mining claims were pegged and gold discovered, leading to the establishment of the twin towns of Leonora and Gwalia, along with the smaller town of Malcolm. A railway link from Kalgoorlie opened in June 1902 and still operates today. The place was declared on townsite on 15 April 1898 , the site having been selected because of its central position between the Gwalia Mines and the four mile leases. The name Leonora was taken from Mt. Leonora. This location was named by John Forrest, 1896, after Lady Eleonora, wife of the Governor of Western Australia.

World War II bought labour shortages, exacerbated by the internment in 1940 of the Italian nationals amongst the workforce. Production fell sharply. The internal shaft at Sons of Gwalia was fitted with its own electric winder, and eventually reached 527ft in depth in 1948, making the mine's total vertical distance 3,778 feet. The end of the war had not eased labour shortage. In an attempt to replace the Italians, few of whom had returned to Gwalia from the internment camps, the company shipped 67 miners directly from Italy in 1949, but only 31 of them were still at the mine a year later and recruitment of labour became a standing concern. By the 1950s, Sons of Gwalia was in its final- decline, battling hard to remain efficient: Mechanical scrapers and loader appeared in the stopes, replacing men wielding shovels. In 1955, underground horses were retired, and replaced by electric locomotives.

For thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, the area around Leonora was inhabited by the Wangkathaa language group of people, who comprised eight tribal groups sharing a common language. They lived by traditional means and customs in family groups scattered across the harsh, arid environment.

Notable Wangkathaa people are Mrs Sadie Canning, MBE, OAM First indigenous Nurse and Matron head matron at Leonora Hospital in the 1950s, Mr Ben Mason, OBE Indigenous Evangelist travelled with Billy Graham Ministry Mr James Brennan, OAM WWII Veteran and survivor.

Each Monday evening throughout Summer, your host of The Listening Post, Tony Howes, welcomes you to the “Summer Repeat Discussions" led by our resident Military Historian, Nigel Rogers. The series of topics, which Nigel has broadcast over the past four years, began last week and concerned The Falklands War. Tonight, the second in this series, takes us to the Mediterranean, and to the George Cross Island of Malta. Malta underlines its nationhood with the Celebrations of the Lifting of the Great Siege. But, importantly, Nigel will highlight, not only the Great Siege but the second and third sieges: indeed, the Three Great Sieges, culminating in the heroism of the Second World War. This topic was first heard early in 2021.

When first broadcast, there were many requests that some archival recordings made by the Band of the 5th Military District be played – we did so in 2021, and we do so tonight.

Other music to be heard will celebrate a new year, and all the hopes for our men and women who are serving or have served our Nation, at home or abroard.

The "Classic Comedy" and "This Week In our Military History" (updated) will also be featured.

James Oswald Little, AO (1 March 1937 – 2 April 2012) was an Australian Aboriginal musician, actor and teacher, who was a member of the Yorta Yorta tribe and was raised on the Cummeragunja Reserve, New South Wales. His music was influenced by Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis and American country music artist Jim Reeves. His gospel song "Royal Telephone" (1963) sold over 75,000 copies, and his most popular album, Messenger, peaked at No. 26 in 1999 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Little signed with Regal Zonophone Records in 1956 and released his first single, "Mysteries of Life"/"Heartbreak Waltz". Little had turned to full-time acting by the 1980s, making his theatre debut in Black Cockatoos . Little taught and mentored indigenous music students at the Eora Centre in Redfern, and from 2002 he was an ambassador for literacy and numeracy for the Department of Education. Since 2000, Little was a guest lecturer at the University of Sydney's Koori Centre. Roebourne is a town in Western Australia's Pilbara region and 1,563 km from Perth and is part of the City of Karratha 35km away. In the Ngarluma language, Roebourne is called Yirramagardu (Ieramagadu).[2] It is the only town on the North West Coastal Highway between Binnu and Fitzroy Crossing; over 2,000km. It is located within the City of Karratha. It prospered during its gold boom of the late 19th century and was once the largest settlement between Darwin and Perth. At the 2016 census, Roebourne and the surrounding area had a population of 981. Temperatures in January can reach upto and over 50 Celsius

Gazetted in 1866, Roebourne was the first town in the North West of Western Australia. The Pilbara region was explored by Francis Thomas Gregory in 1861. He and his exploration party arrived at the head of Nickol Bay, landing near what was to become Roebourne, and travelling about 60 kilometres (40 mi) inland to present-day Millstream Station. The first British settlers, including Gregory's cousin Emma Withnell and her young family, arrived in the Roebourne area in 1863. The Withnells established themselves on the banks of the Harding River 13 km from the coast, where they had access to a reasonable fresh water supply,

In 1872, the town was destroyed by a cyclone. Many of the buildings from shortly after this time are heritage-listed. A number of the heritage buildings were the work of the eminent Public Works Department architect George Temple-Poole. Gold from Nullagine, discovered in 1878, and surrounding copper and tin mines contributed to Roebourne's prosperity in the 1880s and 1890s. With the decline of both, Roebourne lost the majority of its European population and became a shadow of its former self. Remnants from that era of prosperity are various National Trust buildings around the town. The area was struck by another cyclone in 1925 that destroyed the Port Samson jetty and lifted the Pope's Nose bridge from the river bed. Several buildings were also destroyed with the town's residents seeking refuge in public brick buildings during the storm.

The Ngarluma people are the traditional owners of this land and call this place Yirramagardu. Roebourne is on the traditional lands of the Ngarluma people, who have occupied the area for tens of thousands of years. Many Ngarluma people, alongside other traditional owner populations, continue to live in Roebourne, and continue to practise traditional law, culture and language.

Your host Tony Howes and all at The Listening Post, wish you the very best for a happy and healthy 2024.

This evening, we begin the Summer Repeat Season with the first in the Summer replays of a series of broadcasts from Resident Military Historian Nigel Rogers’s much requested historic topics. His first recording was recorded in May, 2019 when the discussion centred on The Falklands War: it is with that broadcast we commence this repeat Summer series.

Music featured then, as it does today in The Listening Post: the programme begins with a musical trip abroard. First, to New York, then to France, back across the Channel to Scotland, then to conclude, London.

On the Listening Post Bandstand, as in the original broadcast, the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines (now the Band of His Majesty, of course).

The segment "This Week In Our Military History" will be updated from the original broadast to reflect this coming week's diary of historic events.

Your presenter is Tony Howes OAM, assisted by Research Officer Allan Downs OAM.
