Joining The Dots takes you on an eclectic journey through classic rock, pop, folk, psychedelic, soul, R&B, reggae, rare recordings, and alternative and beyond. There is no other radio show on other radio stations on the airwaves where you will hear a more diverse playlist and the music appeals most likely more to adults than to teenagers. Putting Joining The Dots together every week since 2011 is
a labour of love, as I try to mix up the genres and I am looking for connections – but most of all it should be fun for our listeners and the material played is worth experiencing again or for the first time. And my next problem is that I love thousands of songs, not hundreds. For these reasons, and because I detest unimaginative radio, when I play a certain tune, I'm not playing it again for ten years. Crazy? Damn right. Of course, if you request the song in question, it will be aired, and every once in a great while, you may hear a live version of said song, but generally, I want to draw from lesser known pieces of an artist's catalogue. This is the reason why you are many songs on my show you would not hear anywhere else. There are a number of regular features on the show:
• The Vinyl resting Place – I will play at least one song, which comes from the original vinyl and often time has forgotten this lovely track. These songs have often not been released on CD
• Uncovered – in this section I play songs, which have been covered by other artists and the cover version is either better known or was more successful
• The Psychedelic Cove – this is the section you turn down the light, light some candles, preferable on top of a bottle, and some smelly sticks close your eyes and go on a journey
• 12” sounds – here we play a song in their 12” version, most of the time from vinyl as there are thousands of records which have not been rereleased in their longer versions
• World Music – due to my status as a ‘blown-in’ in this country I like to play some music from other parts of the world, mainly Europe and here in particular French and Dutch music, but always fitting into the overall theme of discover, rediscovering or listen for the first time! Music has always occupied a special place in my life. It started very early on and was heavily influenced by my parents as the radio was always on in our home or in the car. In the mid-seventies I started DJ-ing first at local dances in halls, later on in proper Discotheques. During the height of the disco era besides working in a well-known Discotheque together with a friend I published a Music Magazine for DJs. We were associated with the DMC (Disco Mix Club founded by Tony Blackburn from Pirate Radio and BBC fame). I started collecting records and then CDs from the early 70ies and early 80ies respectively. These days I can call quite an extensive collection my own and I am rapidly running out of space in my special and dedicated music room. I have been involved with ‘897’ now for about 5 years. I started co-hosting a radio show with Colin Hughes and when he had to stop due to him joining the grey nomads I am running the show by myself. Besides the very eclectic mix of music with a slight emphasis on scurrile music I pride myself on doing the show actually live (nearly) every Saturday night from 9pm to midnight. My wife is not always too happy about this as you can imagine. Luckily she comes from a family who appreciates music and has many accomplished live musicians. So why don’t you tune in on a Saturday night either on your way to or from a party or just to listen to some good but not so well known artists and songs to keep me company. Because one thing is sure, I will be there – live in the studio and spinning the discs.
