Three D Radio Est.1979 • For 45 years Three D Radio has broadcast progressive, alternative music to Adelaide/Kaurna yarta and the surrounding areas, with a strong emphasis on promoting local music.

Three D Radio is unique. We are 100% volunteer run. Our subscribers, supporters and the occasional grant helps us to keep broadcasting and become a stronger, more independent organisation.

As we celebrate 45 years on the air, it’s time to get ready to dig deep and support the station you love during Radiothon 2024.

To acknowledge this huge milestone, we engaged local graphic designer and illustrator Annika Burnside to create a new custom design that reflects the essence of Three D as we turn 45. Our new tees, tote bags and stubby holders for Radiothon 2024 will feature Annika’s vinyl design* – we hope you love it as much as we do!

"Dr. Martin Carthy MBE is one of the giants of the postwar Folk Revival. Old mucker of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, balladeer, inventor of his own guitar style,national treasure.

It has been 20 years since Martin's last true solo album; 10 since his seminal duo album "Moral of the Elephant" with his daughter Eliza, and 6 since the final family album "Anchor" he made with his beloved and much-missed wife Dr. Norma Waterson MBE.

Martin has a new project celebrating the traditional music, poetry, dance and song of the East Coast of England, and has assembled a unique group of musicians, actors and dancers to bring it to life.

Martin and Eliza would dearly love to record this epic work and put it out as an album.

The recording industry is struggling at the moment and no-one can currently help us to do this.

Three completely AI-generated songs were played on the show this week, as examples of what can now be done. These were created via https://www.udio.com/, which is still in its early stages.

It's simply a case of putting in key words of how you want the song to sound, maybe (but not necessarily) adding your own words and letting the program do its thing. The songs are created in roughly one minute chunks which you can add to with a new verse or ending etc.

Below are a couple of those tracks, and as mentioned on the show, I'd be interested in some discussion on this development and its various issues. For example:

No human was involved with recording, writing, performing, arranging these.

The system is taught from listening to millions of songs. Who owns the copyright - of the resultant songs, and of the ones used, even if they're not obvious?

What about those whose voices have been sampled, even if not recognisable?

People can use AI to write music and then take the credit for it.

Are there other problems / issues to consider?

Add to this the fact that the songs can be really good, and the process of creating them can be quite addictive. Where to from here?

With the first song here, I put some words together and used the prompts: folk rock, folk pop, country, acoustic guitar, Australian, female vocal. (NB, it mangles the second verse)

The second, I told ChatGPT to write a song about narcissism, and then Udio to write the music. No humans involved.

Featuring on the show this week, an interview with live to air music from visiting Melbourne artist KATANKIN.

KATANKIN is the solo moniker of singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer Helen Catanchin. Formally trained as a jazz singer, Katankin was born from Helen’s desire to return to her singer-songwriter roots. A phonetic spelling of her Russian surname (allowing its correct pronunciation for the first time in the singer’s life), Katankin further symbolises this return to one’s roots, and one’s true self.

Helen’s unique and compelling voice, along with her poetic, cuts-to-the-bone songwriting, put their unmistakable stamp on Katankin’s songs. She writes and sings unflinchingly from the darkest recesses, and the soft, often icky underbelly of the human experience - wading through love, despair, loathing, tenderness, fear, rage, lust, and then up, up, up into the light.
