TWO ADHD GALS TALKIN' 'BOUT LIFE

In a number of ways, Sage Monkman and I are like two peas in a pod. We're "meso" girls, in PH360 epigenetic terms, which means we share a cluster of similarities in our physical and behavioral traits. We've each experienced our own versions of trauma throughout life, aligning us even more. And we're both diagnosed with ADHD, which sparked this very conversation today. It stemmed from some recent banter between us as we aired our frustrations, leaned on each other for support and understanding, and shared some tips for tackling why the simple often appears so complex for gals like us.

In true ADHD fashion, we didn't stay on track with this topic. But we did explore our ideas around self-management, labels, medication, mindset, and a hearty dollop of woo-woo—because who doesn't love a bit of that?

So if you're up for a casual earwig, this episode might just be your jam!

In this episode, I sit down with the wonderful Fiona Sanford, CEO of The Flourish Journey, an organisation dedicated to empowering teenage girls across Victoria.

We dive deep into Fiona's journey from a competitive gymnast to a leader in mental health education, discussing the transformative power of sport and the critical importance of mental health awareness. Fiona and I explore some of her challenges around identity post-gymnastics and the profound impact that mentorship and community support can have on young athletes.

Fiona also shares touching stories from her workshops, illustrating how Flourish is making a real difference in the lives of young girls by providing them with the tools and confidence to navigate relationships, set boundaries, and build resilience.

Unbeknownst to me upon diving into this chat, I was about to get drawn into an accountability buddy situation with Jem myself. As a result, we're embarking on the science-backed Pennebaker Method of Journaling as both of us had previously learned about via Andrew Huberman. I'm pretty excited actually, can't wait to share the experience with you in a later chat.

We also talked about cultivating optimism, setting boundaries, going off the grid and exploring connections and collaborations in respect to running a solopreneur style business. Plenty for everyone, dare I say!

F$%k Ya 'Prince Charming' Fairytale

Prince Charming, huh? What a story we have been told and sold all this time. He'll come along and pick us out from the crowd. He'll sweep us off our feet and together we'll fall in love. He'll kneel before us with the biggest diamond you ever did see, and we'll say YES and have babies and all live happily ever after. Right?

In MOST cases, hell no!

Alisha Burns shares her own (IMHO turbulent) quest for this perfect fairytale ending, in which (like too many of us) she turned a blind eye and kept those rose-coloured glasses firmly in place. However, when that fairytale came crumbling down in a spectacular fashion (seriously, just wait until you hear the story), Alisha came to the realisation that we do not in fact need that 'Prince Charming' at all to create her perfect family and live her happily ever after.

And so today, solo mum Alisha heads up the Solo Mum Society and lives her best life with her precious daughter and stories of their 'donut' daddy (that's a donor daddy, as they'll one day be able to laugh together about).

#%@$ the numbers!!

What scales DO measure... ✔️✔️✔️
The weight or mass of an object.

What scales DON'T measure... ✖️✖️✖️
The volume of lean mass vs body fat, water, bone, blood, p**p, and the tacos & cookies you just ate for lunch. Nor do they measure your strength, determination, intelligence, compassion, empathy, love, potential, the challenges you've triumphed, the good deeds you've done for others, the joy you've brought to your family and friends, and your inherent and undeniable worth in this life that is yours and yours only.

These photos are 8kg apart (and 8 years). 54kg and 62kg. Neither of those moments did the scales (or the rippling abs) whisper words of worthiness and enoughness to me.

Like so many women (and men, I'm sure) I've, at times, asked the scales for reassurance that I am in fact enough. (What would that elusive number be, anyway?)

I mean, I didn't find enoughness or worth in a six pack or 10% body fat. I didn't find it in state boxing titles or trophies. I didn't find it in the cheers, praise and reassurance that flowed (and still flows, thank you fam) in from the people observing from the perimeters.

All those scales can whisper back to you is a meaningless number... and no matter what number that is, it's your (and my) own inner voice that gives that number a meaning.

We must work on our relationship with ourself as much as our relationship with food & exercise, with titles, achievements and 'successes' (whatever the hell they are). Because broccoli, kale, that 'just-try-harder' discipline and running ourself to death won't resolve the gap in our heart and soul that's reserved for self-love.

Sure, abs are cool... but a fickle friend indeed 😘

Do you ever meet someone and immediately feel your energy soaring just from their presence and outlook? Tune into this chat, and you'll experience exactly that as you listen to Don Elgin. He's an Australian Paralympian, speaker, and author, and I absolutely adored soaking up his enthusiasm and insights.

Born missing 'a little bit of leg,' Don didn't let that slow him down. He grabbed the ball in his life and ran with it, facing challenges with pure passion and positivity!

What more can I say other than, you're going to love him!

Ah, life. The only time we won't experience stress is when we're done and dusted. Stress is part of the contract, and it's actually a healthy and beneficial response to our environment. But since we were 'put together,' we humans and our environment have evolved (and continue to do so). Now, we are constantly switched on, plugged in, chasing lions (these days, that's called having a job or business) and running from bears (metaphorically, mostly). So, how do we manage it and ourselves?

As entrepreneurs, how do we lead (ourself) and be led (by ourself)? Why do we have the answers but not follow them? Why do I (and maybe you) continue to white-knuckle it and do things I'd never advise a client, employee, or friend to do to the point of smashing into that inevitable wall?

I throw all these existential questions to our friend Bobby C today, and we have a little conversational workshop around it!

Sexual harassment and sexual discrimination in the workplace sure seem like potentially murky topics to have a banter about on the show. Yet when I settled into this chat with Skye Charry, it became crystal clear that actually, it doesn't have to be at all. This, as you'll hear me note throughout the chat, proved to be every bit as enjoyable and lighthearted as it was informative and beneficial. Informative and beneficial whether you're an organisation or leader of an organisation, or you're an employee or team member.

Given the subjective nature of harassment, and that everyone's individual experience of what is and isn't appropriate in the workplace, I had assumed (and rightly so) that it must surely be impossible to construct laws and rules to regulate behaviour and ensure that everyone experiences safety. Skye covers so much insightful territory here, helping us understand different perspectives to consider and how to navigate difficult conversations - both formal and informal - to allow us to speak up and speak out when we feel that a situation might need to be addressed.

I actually really enjoyed having this chat, it was a pleasant surprise. I hope you enjoy it too!

Well, 'Trouble' sure showed them!

Today's guest sure fits this show like a glove (a boxing glove, of course). Marissa Williamson Pohlman knows how to roll with the punches both in the boxing ring, and in life.

Their story is one of hardship and challenge from an early age. As a ward of the state, Marissa bounced between 16 foster placements over 5 years from the age of 13. And at 18 amidst the beginning of the pandemic when no longer eligible for care as a minor, homeless.

Despite being told 'this girl is trouble', Kel Bryant took her into his boxing club and here we are in 2024 as she becomes the first Indigenous Australian female boxer to fight at this Olympic Games.

She's got grit, resilience, sass and strength, and it was a pleasure hearing Marissa talk real and raw about her relationship with life, boxing, mental toughness, the importance of community support, and how to stay focused and motivated in the face of adversity.

Come take a seat as Harps and I have a rather real chitty chat about how us humans navigate our bodies, minds, emotions, and all the data and feedback that comes our way. Between listening to our bodies, listening to the experts, paying attention to our own biofeedback and managing all the spinning plates that play into our physical, mental and emotional health & wellbeing it can be quite the project to manage. In this particular chat we are sharing a number of our own personal experiences, sabotages and solutions along the way.

Wear your wins EVERYWHERE you go!!

Righto kids, after a handful of you busting my chops for months about placing a new order for hoodies, tees, and singlets I've tweaked the design to my updated logo, whacked a bit of sass on the back to remind life who's boss around here and I'm about to roll out the custom order.

I live in a shoe box, so ordering and holding stock ain't my jam so if you're keen to check out what's getting printed, how much it will cost (I'm waiting on supplier to confirm) and if you have any requests for specific gear then throw your details on the form I'll add in the comments.

At a point where Tony "Jack the Bear" Mantz is leaping into his 6th decade he's back for a banter on life, the journey, the highs and the lows as he makes the move to shift gears with a new career path and passion. We begin with a chuckle about drawing out some tears and emotion back in our first chat way back in episode 20 (four years ago now), I had the last laugh (or cry) as we got every bit as deep and emotional at one point here too.

Tony shares about overcoming self-sabotage and addiction, his experiences with drug use, shedding a LOT of weight along the way, self-awareness, and the transformative power that psychedelic therapy proved to have in his case.

He's a ripper, you'll love him!

He's back! Our friend Bobby Cappuccio... and bloody hell he's in top form on todays show. Once we cleared the air with some solid cat-daddy talk about Bobby's new fur-kid Houdini, we got stuck into some great banter about if and how hustling might be killing your creativity (you mean 'try harder, work harder' isn't the answer??) We explore how strategy, focus, and self-awareness play crucial roles in mastering life. I always enjoy the enlightening conversations when Bobby joins the show, and I’m sure you’ll get a lot out of this episode too.

Life ever punched you in the face?
Comment with a 👊🏼 if the answer is yes!
We all roll with them (the punches, I mean), and we all react to how we are trained (or conditioned). For me, the canvas became my mirror. A place where I met me for the very first time and gee whizz did it take a bit of getting to know me all over again. In life, we can create a story, we can wear a mask, and we can bend and twist reasoning and beliefs to justify our choices, actions, and behaviours. Without awareness, we can be living, breathing justification factories. But when I found myself in the ring, and in the fight with nothing and no one but me, there was no time between danger and action to construct a bit of bu****it to bask in the confort of. Punches came, I reacted, and then I was left to analyse my reaction and learn if, when, and how to adapt it for better outcomes. And such is life. Who I saw in there (the ring) is who I saw out of there... how you do one thing is how you do everything. And I had to redefine what I believed to be courage, resilience and strength. Sure, I was all of those things in one way, but not the way I was showing the world. There is no courage without vulnerability, and I wasn't willing to lean into that. Until I was.
And that... is what this show is all about.

It's fair to say Michael Dobbie-Bridges is adaptable... and one hell of an athlete! Oh and on top of that, he's an advocate who has made significant contributions to both sports and disability advocacy in Australia. From a tragic motorcycle accident at 21 to becoming a celebrated Paralympian with six World Cups under his belt in Wheelchair Tennis, Michael has become a key figure in promoting inclusivity in sports.

Tune in as we talk about everything from sport and human potential to mindset, business, career, passion, and purpose. I can assure you Michael's attitude and perspectives are worth lending an ear to, whether you have a disability or not.

Despite the title (which will make sense when you listen), there's no nightmare to be found here... well, maybe Ben Plunkett has danced around the edges of what you may call a nightmare or two along the way. But like most difficulties in life (in my opinion), each of his have brought about a shiny side with meaning and purpose.

In this chat we meander through an array of topics ranging from business and entrepreneurship to mental health and getting punched in the face by life, and of course we ponder questions such as 'do we find our purpose or does it find us?'

Ben isn't just the teller of remarkable tales, he's the liver of them too - sharing just some of those with me today. The most recent of which is the birth of his very premature and somewhat impatient new champion son, Pheonix who came bursting into the world at the all-too-soon 23-week mark.

If you're down with hearing lessons, insights and perspectives from someone with his feet firmly planted on the ground yet his sights set sky high, then you're going to love listening to Ben.

What if we approached life as an ongoing experiment, much like a game of Monopoly? How would the weight of our decisions, circumstances, opportunities, successes, and even failures shift and shape our experiences and outcomes?

Mark LeBusque joins us again today, bringing his thought-provoking perspectives as we discuss some of our own current "experiments."

Reversing Alzheimer's & Dementia... Hang on, what? Up until now we've 'known' Alzheimer's & Dementia to be a degenerative neurological condition for which there is no cure or solution. But today I'm speaking with Dr. Heather Sandison who brings with her evidence of a very different reality emerging around the improvement and reversal of these conditions.

Dr. Heather Sandison is the founder of Solcere Health Clinic and Marama, the first residential care facility for the elderly of its kind. She is the primary clinical investigator and author of the peer reviewed article “Observed Improvement in Cognition During a Personalized Lifestyle Intervention in People with Cognitive Decline” published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in August of 2023. She also hosts the annual Reverse Alzheimer's Summit, and her book Reversing Alzheimer’s will be published by HarperCollins this June (2024)

Get excited as she shatters common misconceptions about Alzheimer’s and shares what she has learned about keeping our brains sharp at any age.

It took me a few years to figure it out myself, but eventually, the penny dropped... there is no strength, where there is no vulnerability. Thus, these two attributes became a couple of my most cherished human traits. Traits that despite common misconception, walk hand-in-hand as one.

Strength sans vulnerability sure looks like strength for a while (and I should know, I waved that s**t around for 3 decades). But like brittle bones, it's ready to shatter at first contact (and I should know, it eventually did).

Holding space for stories is something I fell irrevocably in love with when I started Roll With The Punches, and feedback like Leah's fills my heart and soul with joy...

This was my first MC gig... I've spoken plenty and shared my own story in rooms and on stages, but I knew there was a whole lot more to juggle as the MC. The room, the energy and the comfort and ease of the coordinators, guest speakers, and the audience all in MY rambunctious hands... along with the weight of expectation from sponsors, collaborators, and anyone else on the perimeters.

The stakes were high, but I was up for the task... cos quite simply, when you don't like to lose (as I do not), you just damn well make it happen 👊🏼🩵

Who says you can't? Grant Siedle is all about challenging that narrative and proving that the impossible is within reach. One of his standout ventures is Rip Swim, an open water swim through 'The Rip' from Point Nepean to Point Lonsdale. This 3.5km stretch across the entrance to Port Phillip Bay is famed as one of the most thrilling and notorious waterways in the world (don't mind the sharks).

In our chat, we dive deep into the mental, physical, and even spiritual aspects of taking on such formidable challenges. We also explore the transferable skills, critical thinking, and the art of 'learning how to learn' that come with these extraordinary feats.

When I blew my 2024 'holiday budget' on the everyday-will-be-a-holiday, joy-evoking chunk of bliss that is my stunning li'l MTO7, I thought that the winter chill and misery would be tolerable... it's not. Braggety brag... 🥰
Business doesn't excite me. Not the way friendship does.

The reason I LOVE running events and speaking is because the power of stories shared and emotions felt gives rise to permission to 'be' whoever and whatever you/we already are, and to realise it's enough.
Permission to FEEL.
Permission to SPEAK.
Permission to TRY.
Permission to FAIL.
Permission to fu***ng SUCCEED.

Too much of the time, we think that we're the exception.
The broken one.
The undeserving one.
The faulty one.
The shamed one.
The ugly one.
The stupid one.
The unlovable one.
The one who'll never be enough.
We. Are. Wrong.

I dare to make rooms full people laugh together (a lot), cry together (a little), and feel the real emotion and truth beneath of the tellers' stories whilst seeing that they (the teller of the story) are, in fact, you.

Stories. Voices. Vulnerability. Connection. Joy. 🩵

Today my heart is full.

In this episode, Craig Harper and I discuss the different forms of intelligence. While high IQ is often seen as the pinnacle of intelligence, it doesn't encompass social, emotional, or intrapersonal intelligence, among others. We also touch on the impact of various learning styles on perceived intelligence. Harps admits to being a naturally slow learner, but once he learns something, it stays with him for the long haul. On the other hand, I am typically a super-fast learner with a short attention span. This means I can quickly grasp new concepts but struggle to retain the detailed information long-term. Just ask my high school math teachers who begrudgingly handed me my A+ marks, despite my rambunctious classroom disruptions.

The good news is... nothing lasts forever.

The bad news is... nothing lasts forever.

The great news is... we get to influence how we perceive 'good' and 'bad' along the way.

If your moment right now is ah-fu***ng-mazing, pause and take it in while it's right here right now... before it slips through your fingers.

If your moment right now is horse s**t, take a breath (maybe not through your nose) and know that in a fleeting heartbeat you'll be in the next brand-new moment... and there's every chance that new moment won't be horse s**t at all.

Charles Brice began his journey into aviation by starting flight classes at the age of 15 and went solo at 16. His aspirations to become a professional pilot however were tragically altered by a motorbike accident at 19, which left him quadriplegic.

Sharing his early (and ever-present) love for motorbikes, a passion ignited at the age of four, Charles opens up about the impact of his accident and his reality around accepting and adapting to life from that moment on. Something he did seemingly with an edge of ease and grace, given the circumstances. Now a journalist for the ABC and a very recently new Melburnian, I loved this chat with Charles, I'm sure you will too!
