WHILE THE WORLD WAITS
OPENING EVENT – Saturday 11th from 2pm

FEATURED ARTIST | HEATHER DUNN - Dream. Shred. Repeat. 2022.
- one of our featured artists in ‘WHILE THE WORLD WAITS’ Touring Exhibition Celebrating the histories, stories and landscapes of our regions presented by Arts Out West June 9-26 at Gang Gang Gallery, 206 Main Street, Lithgow
OPENING HOURS THURSDAY - SUNDAY 10.30am - 4.30pm

HEATHER DUNN

Dream. Shred. Repeat. 2022.

Woven tapestry: cotton, silk noil, silk, US dollars, tea,
90x80cm (variable).

This is a weaving where the cloth of our dreams are shredded and re-woven, as we struggle to adapt and stay resilient. The reworked dream is different; but similar, full of loose ends, intersections and cross overs. Everything we do impacts others.

The messages on the silk strips, typed on an antique Corona typewriter, are knotted in along the way. They rise like a cresting wave, as we are bombarded with rules, changes to the rules and a constant barrage of all things covid.

Look closely: there is shredded U.S dollars amongst the rewoven dreams to acknowledge the hardships so many have endured, along with the wealth created by a few. There is also a strip of silk that is blank, because at the end of the day, there are no words for the devastation wrought across the world.

Words matter, but process matters as well. This weaving consists of cloth sourced from as far away as China and India and as close as my husband’s hanky draw. The act of shredding the cloth brought to mind my own experience but also the experiences of the musicians who contributed to the album “While the world waits”, as their opportunities vanished. They have still demonstrated talent, nuance and hope in their work.

HELEN TALKED OF THE PROCESS;
“The end of weaving! It was a great moment to start the hitching off of ‘Dream. Shred. Repeat’. I hitched off with silk strips, which I couldn’t wind onto a bobbin as I didn’t have enough room to move.

I look forward to seeing this piece in amongst the other works in the group show “While the world waits” curated by with 20 talented artists from across the range. This exhibition will tour for 12 months which is very exciting.

I'm continually drawn to textiles and the meditative, multi-layered response it affords to the very human need to make art.”

This last statement clarifies for us what Helen does as an artist … ‘while the world waits’.

OPENING HOURS THURSDAY - SUNDAY 10.30am - 4.30pm

MEIKE DAVIS

Meike’s work has evolved from carving in stone and timber to working with clay and ceramics. Largely figurative, Meike tends to work in the narrative expressing the human story.
Meike is a member of the Sculpture Society and has exhibited with the Sculpture Society since 1998.
MEIKE DAVIS Gallery Visit:
On my last visit to Germany, I had the good fortune to be taken to a very interesting sculpture garden situated behind a semi-rural Railway Station near Osnabrueck, a Town in Northern Germany.
The Artist” Volker Johannes Trieb” build his Studio and Restaurant in this location with the sculpture garden as the main focal point.
The Artist used the different garden spaces for his sculptures and ideas, from ceramic pods hanging from trees to rusted steel pieces lying in a ditch apparently discarded, only to be taken over by nature to oak planks wedged between trees to serve as tables. More thick oak beams and planks are arranged into a rustic dining setting morphing into the surrounding foliage.
The big rusty steel sound shells placed on a water feature were particularly impressive, standing inside the shells your voice reverberated back to you, making you feel strangely isolated in amongst the green space surrounding you.
A very organic, slightly medieval, and sometimes Alice in Wonderland feeling and impression was my experience walking through this magical sculpture garden.
This sort of spatial experience is what inspires Meike to put Hands On Clay.

CAROL GILL - Painter

“Like most landscape artists my work is inspired by the environment in which I live and traverse. I have a particular passion for the contrast between the Hawkesbury River region and Central Australian landscapes.

I have bush walked most of my life amongst vast changing landscapes. The transitory experience of which, however fleeting, creates lasting memories from which I draw my creative process. The seasonal changing scape of the riverine landscape in which I live, the spontaneous mass blooming of flora, the arrival of migratory birds to the wetlands, the sudden ravage of wildfire, the emergence of regrowth and the shifting and eroding sands of the Central Australia in which I traverse all converge in my studio to begin a more permanent journey in paper and paint.

Vistas become ideas, cameras capture moments that become sketches and transition into finished artworks that are all generated from brief glimpses of and momentary experiences in the landscape,” that still remain … ephemeral.

PENELOPE OATES - Painter
Penelope Oates, B.A. of Fine Arts COFA ( 1990) B.A. of Dramatic Art in Design NIDA (1994) Dip Ed. UWS (2001)

Penelope’s elegant paintings are characterized by a layered and textural approach. Her work is an organic and beautiful series of natural forms and silhouettes that merge the delineation between land, sea and sky. In this sense, her works reflect moods, feelings, and memories about landscapes rather than a representation of a particular place.

The absence of any figurative forms in her landscapes is deliberate, preferring to reference natural forms that would have existed before our human impact and presence. This approach to the landscape could also be described as Romantic and as such her works take on an almost dreamlike or surreal presence. In one sense her works are timeless but in regards to capturing the stillness of a moment ... ephemeral.
