On Saturday the 18th of May from 9am until midday Radio Blue Mountains, owing to The Theme Machine’s presenter Paul Young being a fully sick Sandgroper, presents ‘Best of the West’, a 45-track playlist rerun from the first day of 2023. He has chosen this show as being not only a personal favourite, but one of several which received a great deal of positive feedback. Please note that the recently promised show of Mancunian musos has been replaced for purely technical reasons — apologies for that. Some of the artists featured include Dave Warner's From the Suburbs, Jebediah, The Triffids, The Dugites, The Waifs, Diesel, The Scientists and Eurogliders.

On Saturday May the 11th, Paul Young’s The Theme Machine presents yet another unique weekly theme, this one being entitled ‘Memory Lane Sequel’. A follow-up to a show from October last year, this show features songs about the importance of memory and recall. Artists include Free, Robert Plant, Tame Impala, Ultravox, Buffalo Springfield, XTC, Split Enz and David Bowie. Remember to tune in from 9 to noon for this 38-track playlist.

The show consists of a 42-track playlist of songs with the word ‘Hope’ (or similar) in the title, with a couple of exceptions in which the songs are hopeful in nature (and are really catchy). Saturday April the 20th from 9am to noon, tune in to Paul Young’s The Theme Machine for ‘Capital Records – The Reboot’ – not Capitol Records as that’s a record label and this is a playlist consisting of 37 tracks with the capital city of a country or state in the title. It’s a revised version of a show I presented back in 2021. Some of the featured artists include XL Capris, Madness, Bob Seger, Bryan Ferry, Joni Mitchell, The Saints, Leonard Cohen and The Mutton Birds.

There are some glaring omissions — owing to the substantial number of exceptionally talented bassists, and my personal preferences … so expect a sequel down the track! Featured players include Jack Bruce, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, Bill Wyman, Lemmy, Les Claypool, Peter Hook, Geezer Butler, Suzi Quatro and Tina Weymouth.

From 9 to noon Saturday April 06, listen out for Paul Young’s The Theme Machine for ‘Family Bands’, a 42-track playlist comprised of songs performed by bands with members (often founders or those most talented and influential) of the same family. Several tunes don’t exclusively feature members of a particular family, but they’ve made the list nevertheless. Keep in mind that the vast majority of bands include (often uncredited) session musos anyway! The wide array of musical acts includes Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Kinks, Oasis, The Beach Boys, Heart, Devo, The Pips and The Bellamy Brothers.
