DarkLab is excited to announce its commitment to safeguarding the future of renowned local record store Music Without Frontiers.
DarkLab has acquired ownership of the store, in order to further the opportunity for music enthusiasts to connect, buy and sell vinyl and CDs, and revel in a shared love for music.
Music Without Frontiers will reopen on Monday 18 December, continuing the cultural legacy of its late founder Stefan Markovitch, who dedicated five decades to the musical landscape of the community.
“Stefan was so passionate about music and enjoyed the enduring bonds of friendship that he had made within the recording industry, including with customers, musicians, and suppliers,” his wife Jenny Markovitch said.
“He was overjoyed knowing that DarkLab had decided to continue the store’s future operation as part of In The Hanging Garden.”
Music Without Frontiers has a special place in Hobart’s cultural history, DarkLab Director Leigh Carmichael acknowledged.
“We are committed to continuing Music Without Frontiers’ legacy by helping to foster a vibrant and diverse music community,” he said.
“Our precinct has four live music venues operating, and having a high quality record store right in the centre of it felt like an integral part of the In the Hanging Garden masterplan.”
Music Without Frontiers will operate at its existing location, 151 Liverpool Street Hobart, with new manager Mel Stewart dedicated to continuing its tradition of stocking a curated selection of vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs.
Music Without Frontiers’ incoming manager Mel Stewart is excited to take on the custodianship of continuing the operation of one of Hobart’s most unique music stores.
Mel has extensive experience in the music industry as a performer, writer, composer, producer, and engineer, and combined with years of involvement with Music Without Frontiers, he’s the perfect custodian for the store’s future.
“Stefan had a wealth of knowledge about music, and a massive collection of exceptional and rare records. I’m grateful for this opportunity with DarkLab to take Music Without Frontiers into the future,” he said.
DarkLab acknowledges Stefan's important contributions to the community and is dedicated to preserving and building upon his legacy, and furthering the business into the future.
