πŸ“’ SEASON 2 IS COMING!

πŸ—“ Wednesday 8th of September
⏰ 9am

πŸŽ™ It has been a hot minute since we have been in the podcast space but we are excited to return! Season 2 will look a little different but will still be a lot of fun. Sharnie is competing in Miss Universe Japan at the moment πŸŽ‰πŸ‘‘ and Tanisha’s 3 brain cells are working hard to produce content during this time. Due to this, we are not able to promise a new episode each week but we will try our best!

Because Sharnie is in Miss Universe preparations, most episodes will only feature Tanisha until further notice. Worry not, Sharnie will join us as soon as she can, and Tanisha will have plenty of different guests on to share the mic 🎀

The reason we are doing this has always been the same. To offer a space where hopefully people can feel heard, take away something they related to, and learn new snippets of information.

🍱 EPISODE 8! 🍣 FOOD, FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

Have a listen as Sharnie shares stories about food from when she used to work at a Japanese restaurant in her younger years.

We love Asian food, but taking it to primary school in the early 2000’s when it wasn’t as popularly enjoyed yet granted us a few stares.

Sharnie also chats about her relationship with Asian food at a young age and what she would have done differently in educating her friends about different cuisines! πŸ₯ŸπŸ™πŸ€

Enjoy ✨✨

EPISODE 7 IS OUT NOW! Give it a listen!

In this episode, we chat about BS aka Beauty Standards! Beauty Standards have been around for a long time and have changed through the different eras. From thin and pale, to androgynous, to athletic and tanned, to an hourglass figure; beauty standards have added to the driving force of consumerism in many industries.

We chat about how beauty standards vary among different cultures. East-Asian beauty standards are very different to Australian beauty standards and we also talk about how we came to terms with understanding that some of these standards were too unrealistic for us to achieve.

We also give our personal opinions on what to do if you feel like you are constantly comparing yourself to the wave of beauty standards and trends all over the media.

Enjoy! 🌸✨

The idea of beauty is always shifting and shaping to current trends depending on which part of the world you live in. Today we're going to be talking about b***y standards... oh oops, I meant BEAUTY STANDARDS! Nah but seriously, the amount of times we said b***y in this episode is IMpeccable. Beauty...

EPISODE 6 IS HERE FOR YOUR EARS! πŸ‘‚πŸΌ

Andddd it’s about culture and race in dating preferences! 🀝 Many ethnic people can relate, but one time or another, our parents would have asked us what race our future partner would be - or for some people, told them what race they would be.

This episode is a bit of a giggle but also kinda deep πŸ₯΄ we’ve got layers πŸ§… In Asian spheres, often race and culture is considered when choosing a romantic partner - whether that is a main theme or not, due to our parents’ preferences and cultural understanding. So, we have a chitchat about in*******al relationships and dating within your race.

Give it a listen and tell us what you think! Shoot us a DM over at on Insta or here on FB! βœ‰οΈ

Recently we have started to see a rise in Asian representation in Hollywood and Western Media. Crazy Rich Asians did a ting for us becoming the highest grossing romantic comedy of the decade. The Farewell, The Half of It and Never Have I Ever shed light on Asian matters in a contemporary lens, while Ali Wong's Always Be My Maybe and Hasan Minhaj's Patriot Act made us laugh till the cows came home.

However, Asian Representation wasn't always like this. From stereotypical characters to characters that didn't serve a large purpose in films, today we talk about the Asian representation we saw in the media while we were growing up. We also delve into the other avenues that we consumed Asian media from when there wasn't enough in everyday TV and movies.

Hope you enjoy this episode! Feel free to DM us at on Instagram or message us on Facebook if you related to anything we talked about in this episode, or if you just wanna chat!

This week we talk about our childhoods as being third culture kids.

🌏 Third culture kids are individuals who are raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality, and also live in a different environment during a significant part of their child development years. β €
β €
🏠 Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea are the places and cultures that we tie to our childhoods. One of the challenges of being a third culture kid is developing your sense of belonging or attachment to a culture which can sometimes lead to a lack of self-esteem or identity. β €
β €
πŸŽ™ Listen to hear stories about our childhood, schooling times and languages we speak. We hope you enjoy, and as always feel free to DM us with any thoughts.

Hey Hey! Welcome to A Side of Rice podcast! This week we talk about our childhoods, where we were born and our journeys to Australia as well as the adaptation that had to come with it. Like a lot of children who grew up in Australia with immigrant parents, we sometimes had to adopt a third culture -...

Join us on this journey as we delve deep into our experiences of growing up influenced by two cultures and trying to find a balance between the two. Our biggest hope is that you can relate, learn something or find solace in knowing that you are not alone. β €

Unpacking and uprooting something is never easy. There will be themes of resentment, rejection and loss of identity that emerge in each episode but we aim to balance it out with laughs and jokes. β €
