Mulberries are in full swing at the moment, and the rain mid year combined with the warm days now have sent most trees into fruiting overdrive.
I've been picking fruit off my tree each morning ... well what the Fig Birds and Currawongs leave behind.
In a few more years, the tree will be large enough that there will be more plentiful juicy fruit for all - including the wildlife.
Today I de-stemmed and cooked up 2.5kg of fruit I've picked over the last 4 days. Half I made into jam (three big jars) and the other half I cooked to freeze and have with icecream layer in the year.
Mulberries are affected by fruit flies, so it's best to immerse the fruit totally under water for a few hours before cooking and the little grubs will float up to the top.
Next lot I harvest over the coming days will go into mulberry pies.
If you have a space in the corner of the yard, think about planting a mulberry tree. They really are great food trees for our subtropical gardens.

WEEKEND HARVEST
Getting out into the garden is so much. better than heading to the supermarket pre-lockdown!!
Looks like stir fry and a cauliflower based soup (while it's still winter) are on the menu for the next couple of days, and maybe a few if these little tomatoes roasted with breakie?
What will you be harvesting during lockdown at your place?

JOBS FOR THE YARD IN JUNE
There's plenty to keep busy in the yard during winter.
It's your last chance to prune hydrangaes back almost to ground level (use the cuttings to propagate new plants). And keep the water up for all your plants during the drier winter weather.
For more tips, see my column in the latest edition of .

Well, I’m at it again... growing pumpkins that is. Glasshouse Country & Maleny News readers may remember last year my fruitful efforts growing Queensland blue pumpkins, I think I had about 25 totalling more than 150kg!
Well, this year I’ll trying my hand at growing gramma pumpkins. Technically, they’re not a pumpkin but a variety of squash. However, they’re more pumpkin like than zucchini like, so I’ll stick with pumpkin.
I’ll keep you all updated on how they’re going.

Wondering what jobs to tackle around the yard this month?
If you had spring-flowering seedlings that didn't survive the flooding rains, it's not too late to plant pansies, Iceland poppies or snapdragons to fill in the gaps.

For more tips on tasks to tackle in May, see the April 27 edition of by clicking the link in my profile. or grab a copy locally at one of our pick up spots.

Following on with our snail tales ... how is this for a snail?! It's a giant African snail and one which Biosecurity Queensland want us to keep an eye out for.
These behemoths grow to 30cm in length and can weigh up to 1kg. An outbreak occurred in Gordonvale, north Queensland in 1977 and a lone giant African snail was found on a property in the Currumbin Valley in 2004.
Last year the snail was discovered 28 times at Australian border checkpoints.

HAIL THE SNAIL!
As a kid, one of my favourite weekend jobs was to collect as many snails as possible from the backyard garden (and it would be a full small bucket at times) and feed them to the chooks.
Nobody really knows how many species of land snails there are in the world but some estimate that it could be around 60,000. Not all are pests and most play a vital part in the delicate web of life that sustains our natural systems.
We all know the common garden snail. It’s an introduced species originating from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. But did you know that they are the same snails that are served in fancy restaurants and called escargot?

“What’s the yellow poppy-like flower I see growing along the roadsides?”
Joan sent me the questions the other week, have you also seen it around?
If you have, it’s most likely Coreopsis lanceolata (coreopsis or tickseed).
It’s an escapee from the daisy family of plants. There are other garden coreopsis species but this one can colonise into pastures, disturbed open forests and along roadside and vacant grounds.
It’s becoming an emerging environmental w**d here and is one that authorities will have to watch and act on if it starts to get out of hand.
