On this day in 1991, the first version of what we think of as ProTools was released. Pro Tools was first developed by Digidesign (now part of Avid Technology) in the late 1980s, and quickly became one of the most widely used DAWs in the music industry. Its adoption fundamentally altered the way music is recorded, edited, and produced.

Early Pro Tools users marvelled at the non-destructive editing, and it's something that's taken for granted today, with a single instrumental track often containing hundreds of hidden edits.

Despite the obvious advantages of digital stereo and multitrack recording / editing, it wasn't until the release of Ricky Martin's 1999 hit Livin La Vida Loca that we heard the first commercial using ProTools exclusively.

Take a look at this 😍 dreamy interface 😍 from the good old days!

Every now and then something so crazy happens at the studio that we’re lucky to have a polaroid lying around. We were beyond stoked to host a recording session with RZA, Capadonna and Masta Killa of
Wu-Tang Clan a few days ago. It was an honour to watch them rhyme, rap, and share a poké bowl with them. They are consummate pros with v high standards and we learned a lot.

Ft. yr boi Sam Hogg on the tools. Ask us to tell you the cake story next time we see you.

[Edit - Daniel Kassulke's been dreaming of this moment since he first heard RZA on the Kill Bill soundtrack that he heard at the screening he sneaked into underage].

Steele is one of the busiest session musicians around but we managed to borrow him for a couple of sessions. If you have ears and live within the greater Brisbane area you have undoubtedly experienced him play with big hitters like Emma Louise, James Johnston Katie Noonan, Butterfingers, Resin Dogs, MKO sun and many many more. You know they're a keeper when the blinding polaroid flash doesn't derail the take.

The Astatic Silver Eagle D104 makes itself known as possibly the most American-sounding and -looking microphone ever to have existed, star studded and adorned with a majestic eagle. As a talkback mic, it is the embodiment of perfection. It has a non-latching push-to-talk switch, saving yourself the frustration of hearing your hot-shot producer farting over the latched talkback 75% of the way through the best take you’ve attempted in hours. Warning: you will never cut hi-fi vocals using it. Submissions now open for creative ways to keep the mic active for a vocal take without using gaffer tape.

Today is the anniversary of Oliver Lodge's groundbreaking loudspeaker patent. Lodge was a British physicist and inventor who is best known for his contributions to the development of the radio and wireless technology. On the 27th April 1898, he was granted a patent for a "loud-speaking telephone," which was one of the first designs for a loudspeaker. This patent was significant because it marked an important step forward in the development of audio technology and allowed for the creation of more efficient and powerful loudspeakers.

Lodge's patent was also one of the first to use the piezoelectric effect, which is the ability of certain materials to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress, to create sound. This technology is still used in many modern loudspeakers today.

TL;DR - recording to and listening back to your music on our ATC Loudspeaker Technology Ltd SCM25s is a revelation.

When we are mixing, typically we'll do this alone to save people from the tedium of watching us tweak hardware and software until we think it's right. We are pretty accommodating if you want to do an attended mix session, but please don't hassle us about cleaning up the 50kHz region.

We recently hosted bona fide legends Roger and Buddy Knox at GW. Always lucky to hear their stories and see how good they are in studio sessions. This was actually their first recording here in 10 years, and they reunited with Rohin who engineered the session for old times' sake.

Josephson are a boutique American microphone manufacturer headed by David Josephson in California. They make extremely versatile microphones, machined with medical-grade precision and genuine innovation. Their large diaphragm C715 is a stellar microphone that has become a Gasworks favourite for vocal tracking, and the midrange warmth and smooth high frequencies have seen success on stringed instruments, amplifiers and more.

One of the defining features of this mic is the metal ‘foam’ grille. It is Josephson’s own patented design, with an unusual acoustically diffuse grille designed to eliminate internal resonance from within the grille itself. The resonance heard in standard microphone designs can be flattering or unflattering depending on the source, but it can never be removed, and can be a problematic issue to deal with. Josephson’s grille allows sound to arrive straight at the capsule without the unintended sonic interference of the microphone’s body. In practice, the C715 is fantastic at taming sibilance and high frequency harshness, and positions a source so squarely and realistically between the speakers you’ll think you’re hallucinating.

We are all delighted to welcome Benjamin Gibson to our Gasworks fam. Besides the studio essentials, Benno is your guy for fun+weird experiments in synthesis and outboard FX units, and he also happens to be one of the lovely people worth spending quality and/or quantity time with in the studio. We also say goodbye to the wonderful Sam, who is convinced he left his wallet at a bus stop outside Air Studios in London. We think he’ll be gone at least 6 months trying to find where he left it. Love you, Sambo. Brisbane just lost a bit of sunshine.

The Josephson E22s is a side-address, small diaphragm condenser designed by Josephson in collaboration with Steve Albini, who needed an unobtrusive microphone that could nestle itself between components of a drum kit, and could withstand being struck by a drumstick without being damaged. You would be safe to assume that this mic can do both those things, but it is easily one of the most versatile microphones in our stable. We have found success with this microphone paired with vocals, drums, acoustic and electric guitars, drums (as spots, but they are spectacular on overheads), pianos, woodwinds and strings. They became so useful that we invested in 4!

You can expect the e22s to stand up to the sonics of your favourite vintage European mics, but with none of the maintenance issues, and with the bonus of being able to close mic a drum kit with them without overloading vintage capsules. Culinarily they resemble a lollipop but won’t meet your nutritional needs.

Everyone please thank uncle Steve and uncle David .engineering for this modern classic.

We were very lucky last week to have the rising floodwaters just miss our little slice of heaven. We took apart the entire studio and took a lot of gear out as a precaution, but after a couple of days of work last weekend we are well and truly up and running again.

We are very lucky to have a pair of SCM25As guiding us through every recording and mixing session.

ATCs produce the components of their speakers in-house to maintain a level of manufacturing consistency that wouldn’t be possible if sourced elsewhere. Working on these feels like cheating, and it’s wild how quickly problem areas reveal themselves throughout the entire frequency spectrum, especially the midrange.

The 25s have extremely low distortion, making minute changes more audible and reducing the likelihood of overcooking any processing, and it’s a breeze working longer sessions on these monitors. These are a nice complement to our classic alt monitors, the Yamaha NS10s.

The best compliment for Connor’s horror score is a constant sense of unease while listening to the takes. 👻

The Historical Neumann SM2

We have a small stake in recording history at Gasworks; our vintage Neumann SM2 is the first stereo condenser microphone ever made. The upper capsule rotates 270 degrees to offer all permutations of coincident stereo techniques, from X-Y through to M/S and Blumlein. The valves offer very pleasing saturation and subtle transient softening, and this should be among your first choices for sources needing a sense of width and a larger-than-life stereo field.

The SM2 (essentially two Neumann KM56s in one body) was a staple in Motown vocal recording, but has been in high demand for its flexibility for string ensembles, drum overheads and piano.

We’d think you are probably a massive genius if you used just one of these stereo capsules to record vocals with.

Massive thanks to Gunter Wagner who worked his magic to troubleshoot some issues we had with our power supply. We’re very lucky to have a Neumann guru so close by in Sydney. There are very few techs worldwide who have the experience or know-how to get vintage Neumann mics back on their feet.

635-A
The humble Electro Voice 635a dates back to the 1960s. It occupies an unusual position within microphone technology, as a dynamic microphone with an omnidirectional polar pattern. It has long been a favourite of news correspondents for its ruggedness and forgiving nature. Those features make it a great workhorse, and an alternative to the similarly priced SM57.

Consider the EV635-A when looking to tame cymbal overtones or any strident source, make background vocals recede into the distance, or if you want to transport your recording session back to the days of valves, reel-to-reel recorders and audio engineers in lab coats. We have 2 for your stereo needs.

This mic has been getting a real workout as a vibey mono colour mic on drum kit recently.
