I love symmetry, converging lines, blueskies and sunny days...working on a new online photography course for kids. Basically it will be what I teach at my kids holiday classes in an online format. Give a group of students the freedom to create, provide a few tools and parameters, guide them (not do it for them) facilitate, be there to answer their questions, help problem solve. And finally, let them take ownership of the finished result. Last week of working with these talented peops.

Photography Tip | Advanced level
Black and white images come in all blending modes. So for all you photographers out there get out of your comfort zone (Lightroom) and try the calculations and blending modes in Photoshop to give your black and white images more contrast, tone and detail. For batch edits create actions.

This type of editing gives you more control and creative options, while maintaining the quality of the image, as opposed to slapping a filter on it. ;-)

My Weekly Photography Tip for you:
Composition | Converging lines

Perspective is something that I always look for when shooting spaces or interesting walkways. So if I'm shooting an urban space or nice landscape I will look for where the lines converge into the distance.

This adds interest to your photo by guiding the viewers eye towards a point of interest and adding depth. I've included two examples of how this could work :-).

My Weekly Photography Tip for you:
Composition | Rule of Thirds

A basic guide you can use to frame your images with is the Rule of Thirds. Imagine a grid on your screen dividing it into thirds. You can now use the top or bottom third to place your horizon upon or align your subject matter using the intersecting points as a reference to the left or right (refer to picture for examples).

This is a simple technique that will help to bring balance and interest to your photos. Time to put it into practice if you haven't already:-)

I would say (and my personal opinion) one of my favourite contemporary portrait photographers today. Not for her photography (although it's pretty darn EPIC!). But for her conviction to follow through on her passion regardless of going against the flow. Love that she is sharing her knowledge with other photographers wanting to perfect their craft. AMAZE :-)

My Weekly Photography Tip for you:

BEFORE I take a photo the first THREE things I do are:
1. I look at the subject matter and determine what I want the audience to feel and think. (What's the story first)
2. Then I look at the quality of the light and how it's falling on the subject. (Exposure makes a huge difference)
3. Finally, I look through the camera/phone viewfinder/screen, moving my camera around the subject to see what the best composition is.

I do these three things first before I start every shoot.
Anyone can press a button and take a photo, but it's this process that will give your photography intention and focus.
If you don't already have a pre-shoot process in place try this and see how much better your images will look :-)
