Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology

This Flood Watch provides early advice of possible flooding within the specified catchments.

Flood Watch for Coastal Catchments from Sarina to Tweed Heads

Issued at 12:20 pm EST on Monday 12 August 2024

Flood Watch Number: 4

ISOLATED MINOR TO MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE ACROSS PARTS OF THE FLOOD WATCH AREA FROM LATE TUESDAY

A rain band extends over eastern and central Queensland. An upper trough extends over Queensland enhancing showers and thunderstorms. The upper trough will move south down the east coast from today, moving offshore late on Wednesday. A surface trough is forecast to develop near the central Queensland coast from today, most likely between Carmila and Hervey Bay, and will enhance rainfall, winds, and seas in its vicinity. The coastal trough will weaken from Thursday.

Catchments within the Flood Watch Area are moderately dry but beginning to wet up after rainfall in coastal areas over the last few days.

Moderate to locally heavy rainfall is possible over the Flood Watch Area from the remainder of Monday until Wednesday, easing on Thursday.

Significant uncertainty still remains in the timing and location of the rainfall, although the coast and adjacent ranges are most likely to see the heaviest falls.

Localised river level rises and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall, with isolated minor to moderate riverine flooding possible.

Due to the localised nature of the heavier falls, at this stage it is not possible to be more specific about the areas of highest flood risk.

Flooding may result in disruption to transport routes and isolation of some communities.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Connors, Isaac and Styx Rivers and Plane Creek

Mackenzie and Fitzroy Rivers and Shoalwater and Water Park Creeks

(Riverine flooding not expected in Fitzroy or Mackenzie Rivers at this stage)

Calliope River

Boyne River

Baffle Creek

Kolan River

Burnett River

Burrum and Cherwell Rivers

Mary River

Noosa River

Sunshine Coast Rivers and Creeks

Pine and Caboolture Rivers

Upper Brisbane River

Lower Brisbane River

(including the Bremer River and Lockyer, Laidley and Warrill Creeks, excluding the lower Brisbane River itself)

A Winter storm will hit us hard from early next week with snow flakes "possible" as far north as the Granite Belt QLD! A complex low pressure system will develop off SE Aust on Sunday and become slow moving until about Thursday. The low will drag a polar airmass up over large parts of Aust inc. Southern QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, SA and Tasmania during the week. Very strong freezing cold South to West winds will produce the coldest daytime temperatures so far this Winter and it pretty much doesn't get much colder than this system. (Map 1)
Snow is forecast to hammer Tasmania and the Alps but also reaching the Central and Northern Tablelands of NSW down to 900meters ASL. At this stage weather data currently indicates that sleet and some snow flakes are possible around the Stanthorpe area either Tuesday or Wednesday with 4-8cms of better snow a bit further South around Guyra during those 2 days. (Map 2 - Red and green circled areas)
All model data is still chopping and changing the snow amounts on various days between Monday night and Thursday afternoon for the Northern and Central Tablelands of NSW. We will be able to provide more confident predictions if people want to go and experience snow by the end of the weekend and these will have detailed snow map locations, times and amounts in our subscription service here > https://higginsstormchasing.com/subscribe/

From Tamborine Mountain Show Society:

It is with great sadness that we have all as a Community, witnessed the end of a piece of Tamborine Mountain History.
The Sentinel which is part way up the Mountain between Tamborine Village and Tamborine Mountain, has been removed.

Main Roads deemed it unsafe after several years of Crumbling. Many residents are feeling quite gutted by the quickness of the process.

The Tamborine Mountain Show Society is putting on a gathering at the Showgrounds,
at 2 pm tomorrow, Sunday 26th May, with a sausage sizzle and Tea and coffee and cordial.

If you would like to come along with like minded people who just want to share their feelings, please do. If any of you would like to bring a plate with something to share that would be appreciated.
If any one, especially children wish to do a drawing of our beloved Rock, please do, we will display all drawings.

Vanessa Bull.
Show Society President.

---Within Energy acquires new geothermal exploration permits in Queenslands, Australia---

Within Energy has expanded their portfolio with three new Geothermal Exploration Permits in various areas within Queensland, Australia.

Local renewable energy company Within Energy has announced the addition of three Geothermal Exploration Permits (EPGs) across Queensland, Australia to their baseload energy portfolio. This is in addition to the three EPGs that the company had already secured earlier this year in South-East Queensland.

Thus far, the EPGs of Within Energy are as follows, with the latter three representing the newest additions:

EPG 2026 – Lockyer Project (between Toowoomba and Brisbane)
EPG 2027 – Biggenden Project (West of Maryborough with major transmission network access)
EPG 2028 – Gladstone Project (In the Gladstone area and contains major green energy projects)
EPG 2031 – Dalby Geothermal (Between Dalby and Toowoomba in the Darling Downs)
EPG 2030 – Goondiwindi Geothermal (In the Goondiwindi region in the Darling Downs)
EPG 2032 – Rockhampton Geothermal (In the Rockhampton to Duaringa region in Central Queensland)

Within Energy is planning to develop shallow geothermal resources from permeable formations east of the The Great Divide. Considering the low temperatures expected in this region, the use of binary power plant technology is planned.

Say goodbye to our beloved bull “ Angus”!
Unfortunately the Scenic Rim Regional
Council have now formally requested we take him down.
It has been a proces which was originally started with them contacting us about “ Town Planning” permission then moved on to “its too heavy” ( they don’t know the weight - only 65kg) anyway, they have now got their way with it “ (being over the footpath , which is council controlled)
I guess all other signage/aircon units etc are ok? The last suggestion was to move up on to the main building ; not over council land.
Anyway, we have neither the want or finances to move him or fight with council, so he’s coming down…..
Long term, if we get him certified, engineered, tested etc etc he will be going back up … maybe.
