Whether Johannes Tinctoris and Barbingant ever met, we do not know. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent, that both composers are still widely underestimated in their impact on contemporaries and the generation after them. Johannes Tinctoris, for example, about whose biography we know quite a bit, is known today primarily as a theorist.

Of Barbingant we know next to nothing. Even with the use of forensic methods, neither his first name nor the period of his activity can be clarified. However, the sparse sources allow us to conclude that his creative period can be narrowed down to approximately 1440 to 1460. Thus, the mysterious Maître Barbingant is one of the most innovative composers of his time, whose music apparently radiated beyond Johannes Ockeghem.

In 1954, young musicians came together in the Franciscan Church in Vienna to record sacred music by **Johann Sebastian Bach** together with the well-known British countertenor **Alfred Deller**.

The Dutch harpsichordist, organist and conductor Gustav Leonhardt was able to assemble pioneers of early music in his Leonhardt Baroque Ensemble for this recording: Eduard Melkus and Marie Leonhardt (baroque violins), Michel Piguet (baroque oboe) and Nikolaus Harnoncourt (baroque violoncello), as well as Alice Harnoncourt (baroque viola).

The result was not only a remarkable document for the history of early music, but also an overwhelming interpretation that has lost none of its freshness almost 50 years later.

For the 10th anniversary of Gustav Leonhardt's death in 2022, the recording has been digitised and remastered from a mint LP from 1954.
