Government’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector is bearing fruit as evidenced by the near completion of the Romsely Irrigation Scheme in Makoni, Manicaland Province. Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Manicaland Province, Advocate Misheck Mugadza recently visited the site to monitor its progress, highlighting the Government's dedication to improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. “This ambitious initiative, now at 90.6% complete, is set to transform 384 hectares of land and provide a significant boost to local agriculture.

“Romsely Irrigation Scheme draws its water from the perennial Mucheke River, ensuring a reliable water supply year-round. The Department of Irrigation is constructing an 18-kilometer canal to distribute water across the entire scheme, guaranteeing efficient irrigation for all the participating farmers. “Upon completion, the Romsely Irrigation Scheme will support 315 smallholder communal farmers, each receiving 1.2 hectares to cultivate. Minister Mugadza expressed optimism about the project's impact during his visit.

"The near completion of the Romsely Irrigation Scheme is testament of our commitment to revitalizing agriculture in Manicaland. This scheme will not only improve food security but also enhance the livelihoods of our smallholder farmers," he stated. Minister Mugadza further highlighted that the resuscitation of the Romsely Irrigation Scheme marks a significant milestone for Makoni and its surrounding areas. “The revitalization efforts, which began in 2020, aim to restore the scheme's full potential and reinvigorate local agriculture. This initiative is not just about providing irrigation but also about empowering the smallholder farmers who form the backbone of the community,” said Minister Mugadza.

A tomato farmer, Thomas Mutero emphasized the critical role played by Government in guaranteeing the triumph of extensive agricultural ventures like his own. “With the right support, agricultural projects can not only thrive but also contribute significantly to food security, economic growth, and employment opportunities within the community,” said Mutero. As the June 30 deadline approaches, the anticipation and excitement among the local farming community continues to build. This project exemplifies the positive impact that strategic infrastructural investments can have on local communities, heralding a new era of agricultural prosperity for Makoni and beyond.

--------------------------------------------------------------
The City of Harare has announced its decision to begin closing down dilapidated public buildings within the city this week, the Harare Post can reveal. These structures have been declared unfit for occupation, posing significant safety hazards to occupants and the general public. In an interview with this publication, the Harare City Council town clerk, Hosiah Chisango emphasized the gravity of the situation stating, "As of June 1, all the buildings that did not comply with the orders will be locked up because we gave them enough grace period to bring through their plans." Chisango explained that property owners were given a six-week grace period to address the issues identified in their buildings.

“Those who failed to make the necessary improvements during this period would now face closure. The licence from the City Health Department would not be renewed for non-compliant properties until they meet the required standards,” he remarked. Last month, the Harare City Council issued a total of 233 abatement orders. An abatement order is a legal document issued by a Government agency or an authorized body to address a building nuisance or violation, requiring the recipient to take specific corrective measures. Chisango pointed out that they commenced issuing abatement orders on April 11, 2024, continuing through to the end of the month.

“Once this phase concludes, they will transition to the second phase, during which negotiations will not be entertained, as ample grace period has already been afforded to the building owners. “The second phase involves council officials inspecting the buildings to determine compliance with the abatement orders. Those that have not met the required standards will be locked up, with no further negotiations,” said Chisango. Among the properties recently deemed unfit for use are notable structures such as Mahachi Building, Vivandelphi Court, Stewarts & Lloyds, Dublin House, Msasa House, Bush House, Roslin House, Daventry House, and Robin House. Meanwhile, Warren Park residents are becoming increasingly concerned and are up in arms with the Harare City Council management over swirling rumours hinting at potential demolitions of their cherished homes.

https://www.hararepost.co.zw/en/the-news/local-news/8667-gvt-to-implement-structured-finance-facility-to-clear-harare-council-s-water-debt
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Commission of Inquiry into the Matter of Local Governance by Harare City Council has agreed to establish a structured finance facility in a bid to resolve the longstanding debt crisis affecting Harare's portable water treatment. A source privy who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the decision was made during a recent meeting between IDCZ and the Mutapa Investment Fund (MIF). "The Industrial Development Corporation of Zimbabwe and the Mutapa Investment Fund have decided on a structured finance facility to clear the debt for water treatment chemicals," the source said. In an effort to streamline payments and ensure accountability, the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) has been instructed to execute a stop order of USD 50,000, or its equivalent value in Zimbabwe dollars (ZiG), on a daily basis.

"CBZ was directed to enforce a daily stop order of USD 50,000, which will contribute to a maximum weekly payment of USD 300,000 towards the reduction of the total debt," the source elaborated. To further support this initiative, prominent companies such as Old Mutual and Delta Corporation have agreed to channel their payments into a designated sinking fund account managed by CBZ Holdings. "Companies like Old Mutual and Delta are set to direct their payments into the nominated sinking account at CBZ," the source added. The structured finance facility is seen as a crucial step in addressing the financial mismanagement that has plagued the CCC-led council.

"This approach is designed not only to clear the debt but also to prevent the misuse of funds by the opposition-led council," the source emphasized. Moreover, the debt for water treatment chemicals has severely impacted Harare's ability to provide safe and reliable water to its residents. The financial difficulties faced by the CCC-led council have been a significant concern, with many attributing the crisis to poor management and corruption. This intervention underscores Government's commitment to improving public services and addressing the inefficiencies within local councils. As the structured finance facility takes effect, it is anticipated that Harare’s water supply issues will gradually be resolved, providing much-needed relief to the city's residents.

Zimbabwe-Korea agricultural relations are progressing well as evidenced by the three key projects in Hwedza, Ward 6. A tour to evaluate the progress made through this collaborative effort was undertaken recently by a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korea Partnership for Innovation of Agriculture (KOPIA), led by Chief Director Mr. Mike P.T. Chigiji. The tour included a greenhouse, housing 500 tomato plants, a 5,000-capacity incubation centre, still under construction, and rice paddies in Chishaka village. The rice paddies are especially notable for using strains of 201 and 301 rice grains selected by the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC), which require significantly less water compared to traditional varieties. During the tour, Chief Director Chigiji, praised the KOPIA projects for their innovative approach and positive impact on local agriculture. "The progress in Hwedza demonstrates the benefits of international cooperation. These KOPIA projects are enhancing agricultural productivity and improving the livelihoods of local residents," Chigiji said.

In an interview with this publication, residents of Hwedza district warmly welcomed the benefits brought by the Zimbabwe-Korea agricultural collaboration. David Mutswi, a local farmer expressed her gratitude, stating, "The greenhouse project has not only provided us with a steady supply of tomatoes but also introduced modern farming techniques to our community." Tinashe Mabika, another resident, emphasized the significance of the incubation centre for the local poultry industry, "The 5,000-capacity incubation centre, once completed, will greatly enhance our poultry production and create much-needed jobs in our area," he noted. The rice paddies in Chishaka village have also received positive feedback from the community.

"The new rice strains are a real advantage, especially given our climatic conditions. These varieties allow us to grow rice more efficiently and sustainably," commented John Chikowore, a farmer in the village.Meanwhile, the Second Republic’s engagement and re-engagement thrust continues to strengthen international relationships and attract foreign investment. This initiative focuses on rebuilding ties with global partners, fostering economic growth, and promoting sustainable development across various sectors, including agriculture. The collaboration with KOPIA exemplifies the success of these efforts, highlighting the potential for impactful partnerships that drive progress and innovation in local communities.

The Angolan Foreign Minister, Tete Antonio, has praised President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF on their August, 2023 electoral victory labelling it a milestone that sets the stage for the country's socio-economic advancement.

His remarks followed a fruitful discussion with his Zimbabwean counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister, Frederick Shava.

After the meeting, Minister Antonio highlighted the victory of President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF as pivotal for ushering Zimbabwe onto a path of enhanced development and prosperity.

"The election victory by ZANU PF aims to develop the socio-economic landscape of the country," Antonio remarked, emphasising the crucial role of political stability in fostering sustainable growth.

He further lauded President Mnangagwa's dedication to reformative measures and his vision for rejuvenating Zimbabwe's economy.

The Angolan minister's statements align with the sentiments of many across Zimbabwe and the wider African continent, who see a stable political environment as essential for attracting investments and executing long-term developmental plans.

Moreover, while addressing regional issues, Minister Antonio strongly criticised the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, echoing the Southern African Development Community's (SADC) collective stance.

He articulated that these sanctions not only tarnish Zimbabwe's image but also obstruct its economic progress and that of the broader African region.

"The sanctions place a negative image and hinder the development and the reach of the economic development of African countries," Antonio explained.

In a demonstration of solidarity, Antonio expressed Angola's readiness to collaborate with Zimbabwe within the SADC framework.

He also voiced support for Zimbabwe's endeavour to assume the presidency of the Ministers Council of SADC at the forthcoming 44th SADC Summit, scheduled to be hosted in Zimbabwe.

Political analyst Elton Ziki noted that the Angolan Foreign Minister's unequivocal condemnation of the sanctions reflects SADC's strong commitment to advocating for the removal of obstacles that impede Zimbabwe's development.

"The punitive measures imposed by certain Western nations have been widely criticised for exacerbating Zimbabwe's economic challenges and impeding its progress," Ziki commented.

Ziki added that the endorsement by Antonio not only reinforces the spirit of regional cooperation but also signals a broader regional consensus on supporting Zimbabwe's path forward amidst ongoing challenges.

Western embassies hijack planned students’ protests:
https://www.hararepost.co.zw/en/the-news/local-news/8549-western-embassies-hijack-planned-students-protests
----------------------------------------------------
Allegations have surfaced that certain Western embassies are manipulating planned protests by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) to advance their own political objectives.

According to a source who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, these embassies are accused of exploiting student protests to serve their political agendas.

"ZINASU intended to stage protests against exorbitant fees at State universities . However, Western embassies have hijacked these plans, using them as a tool to push their political agendas under the guise of supporting student activism," the source revealed.

These developments come as ZINASU leader, Emmanuel Sitima, is alleged to have received funding from certain Western embassies.

The purpose of this funding, according to allegations, is to stir unrest among students, pushing them to participate in protests.

"Sitima was given funds by some Western embassies to coax other students into participating in protests. These are intended to draw international attention to Zimbabwe for the wrong reasons, especially ahead of the upcoming SADC summit scheduled in August in Harare," the source added.

In response to the challenges faced by students concerning high tuition fees, an official within the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, preferring anonymity, disclosed that the Government is actively implementing support mechanisms.

"To assist students who are struggling to pay fees, the Government has introduced a 'work for fees' programme targeting those from underprivileged backgrounds at State universities. This initiative is already in place at institutions like the National University of Science and Technology (NUST)," the source stated.

Further, the source mentioned that the Government is also offering loans to students at higher and tertiary education levels, although there has been a low uptake of these opportunities.

Addressing the issue, political commentator Gertrude Chuma emphasised the importance of students voicing their concerns about high tuition fees but cautioned against the manipulation of these protests.

"While it's crucial for students to express their concerns regarding exorbitant tuition fees, they must be wary of being manipulated by individuals or groups with vested interests," Chuma remarked.

She added, "The Government should also explore more ways to lessen the burden of fees on students from underprivileged families."

https://www.hararepost.co.zw/en/the-news/local-news/8544-biti-fails-to-fulfil-his-pledge-to-danhiko-primary-school

Opposition leader Tendai Biti has come under fire for not fulfilling his commitment to providing adequate paint to refurbish Danhiko Primary School, a learning institution for students with disabilities.
A source close to the school shared, “Danhiko Primary had high hopes when Mr Biti pledged to support the enhancement of their facilities. Unfortunately, his contribution of five litres of paint was woefully inadequate given the extensive needs of the school and its students.”
The source added that Biti’s gesture starkly contrasted with the comprehensive support the school required, leaving the administration and community disappointed.
Adding to the frustration, a concerned parent from Danhiko Primary, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed deep disappointment.
“This failure to follow through on his commitment reflects not only a lack of dedication but also a disregard for the needs of disabled students who rely on adequate infrastructure for their education. Biti’s actions have underscored the importance of holding officials accountable for their promises and ensuring that they prioritise the welfare of the citizens they serve,” the parent stated.
Further criticism came from political analyst Terrence Chipwanya, who pointed out a troubling pattern in Biti’s priorities.
Chipwanya highlighted the broader implications of such neglect.
“Citizens deserve officials who prioritise their needs and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to improving their livelihoods. The community’s disenchantment with Biti is a reminder of the essential accountability required from our leaders,” he added.
Efforts to get a comment from Biti to get his side of the story were futile as his mobile phones were not reachable.
However, as the story of unmet promises unfolds, the disappointment at Danhiko Primary serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for integrity and responsibility among officials, particularly when it comes to supporting the vulnerable sectors of society.

------------------------------------------------------------------
President Mnangagwa has praised Manicaland Province for its pivotal role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

Speaking during the 44th Independence Day celebrations at Murambinda A Primary School yesterday, the President highlighted the Province's proximity to Mozambique, which made its communities vulnerable to the indiscriminate racist brutality of the colonial regime.

"Manicaland Province will always be remembered as one of the many Provinces in the country that bore the brunt of the liberation struggle which ushered us into the independence and freedom which we all enjoy today,” said President Mnangagwa.

The President paid tribute to national icons from Manicaland, including the late Cde Ndabaningi Sithole, Cde Herbert Wiltshire Chitepo, Chief Rekai Tangwena, Cde Edgar “Two Boy” Tekere, Cde Maurice Nyagumbo, Cde William Ndangana, Cde Kumbirai Kangai, and others.

He also mentioned historic landmarks like the Dzapasi/Foxtrot Assembly Point, which served as a temporary refuge for about 15,000 freedom fighters.

Looking forward, President Mnangagwa announced plans to unveil more liberation sites, following the example of already recognised monuments such as the Dzapasi Assembly Point, Pupu in Matabeleland North, and Kamungoma in Masvingo.

The President proudly shared that Zimbabwe's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has surged to over US$47 billion, up from US$16 billion in 2018.

"Our country’s GDP is now exceeding US$47 billion. This shows that we, the descendants of the Great Munhumutapa, are resilient, focused, determined, and hardworking. Zimbabwe is winning," he declared.

The President also reiterated his commitment to transforming Zimbabwe into a robust digital economy and a knowledge-based society.

He emphasised the importance of responsible social media use to defend the country's independence and national pride while promoting unity, harmony, and productivity.

"Social media platforms must be used responsibly to defend our independence and national pride, as well as to educate, maintain unity, harmony, and drive production and productivity in all our communities," President Mnangagwa urged.

Zimbabwe is set to assume the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in August this year, with a commitment to enhancing regional peace, stability, and economic integration.

Speaking during the main Independence Day celebrations in Murambinda, Manicaland Province yesterday, President Mnangagwa outlined the nation's vision for its tenure as SADC Chair.

"August this year will see our country assume the chairmanship of SADC. With humility, our country will continue to promote the vision and ethos of the Founding Fathers of SADC towards consolidating regional unity, peace, stability, and propelling economic integration," President Mnangagwa declared in his address.

The President emphasised Zimbabwe's ongoing commitment to regional peace and security.

"In this enduring spirit, Zimbabwe is playing its part towards the realisation of peace and security in the SADC region, Africa, and beyond," he added.

Commenting on the country's foreign policy, President Mnangagwa highlighted Zimbabwe's open and friendly stance on the international stage.

We are bolstered by our historic bond of friendship as well as new partnerships and investments from across the world. Flourishing relationships are being forged based on mutual respect, shared values, and win-win benefits. In 2023, new diplomatic missions were established in line with our engagement and re-engagement agenda," said the President.

As Zimbabwe gears up for its leadership role in SADC, preparations are underway to ensure the success of the upcoming summit.

The forthcoming SADC Summit not only represents a significant diplomatic undertaking for Zimbabwe but also an opportunity to showcase its commitment to regional cooperation and leadership.

Opposition figures praised for attending national Independence Day celebrations:
https://www.hararepost.co.zw/en/the-news/local-news/8528-opposition-figures-praised-for-attending-national-independence-day-celebrations
-------------------------------------------------------------
Prominent opposition figures attended Zimbabwe's National Independence Day celebrations in Murambinda, drawing commendations from various quarters for their participation.

The presence of these figures, including National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Welshman Ncube, LEAD leader Linda Masarira, and opposition legislators Charlton Hwende, Sengezo Tshabangu, Cecilia Chimbiri, Richard Tsvangirai, and Happymore Chidziva, among others, marked a departure from past events, which were often marked by political divisions.

Political commentator Richard Musiiwa commended the opposition for their participation, highlighting its significance.

"The maturity shown by these opposition figures in attending the main Independence Day celebrations is commendable. Their presence not only enhances our democratic fabric but also sets a positive precedent for political engagement in Zimbabwe,” Musiiwa noted.

Further underscoring the theme of unity, another political analyst, Hilda Mangezi, emphasised the importance of focusing on commonalities rather than differences. "What unites us is more important than what divides us. I urge all opposition figures to play a constructive and positive role in the development of the nation, rather than staying on the peripheries or simply attacking the Government,” said Mangezi.

Buhera resident Cynthia Makawa questioned past practices, hinting at possible political barriers that might have prevented such unity before.

"Was it Nelson Chamisa who was barring some of the opposition members from attending the national celebrations in the past, considering that a number of his former colleagues attended this event?” asked Makawa.

Amid the celebrations, Senator Sengezo Tshabangu spoke about the importance of inclusivity in national events.

"National events are for every Zimbabwean. I urge all Zimbabweans, including those in the opposition, to attend and participate during these gatherings. It's crucial for fostering a spirit of unity and cooperation."

As the country faces some challenges, the collaborative spirit demonstrated by political leaders at such national events is a positive indicator of potential progress in Zimbabwe's political environment.

This year's celebrations not only commemorated Zimbabwe's independence but also celebrated the growing maturity and unity within its political landscape.

--------------------------------------------------------------
President Mnangagwa assured the nation that no one will die of hunger as the Government is mobilising extensive resources to combat the severe drought conditions induced by El Nino.

This assurance came during the President’s keynote address at the main Independence Day celebrations held at Murambinda A Primary School in Manicaland Province yesterday.

"Tiri hurumende yeruzhinji rwe Zimbabwe. Singu-hulumende wabantu. The Second Republic, under ZANU PF, is a people-centred government committed to wholeheartedly attending to the needs of our communities. In both rural and urban areas, no Zimbabwean will succumb to starvation. Adequate resources are being mobilised towards national food security," President Mnangagwa declared.

Further elaborating on the measures being taken, President Mnangagwa explained that the Food Deficit Mitigation Programme is expanding rapidly.

"The Food Deficit Mitigation Programme is gathering pace following the identification of vulnerable communities and households in every district and ward. Drawing from our traditional heritage, cultural norms, and values, we are tackling the drought in unity; no one and no place will be left behind. Meanwhile, my government is implementing a robust winter cropping programme as we broaden our Strategic Grain Reserves. Furthermore, measures are in place to reactivate winter maize projects in Chiredzi, Muzarabani, and Binga,” said the President.

The President urged the citizens to embrace the newly introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, which is designed to be more stable than its predecessors.

"Our ZiG currency is anchored by our God-given gold and other strategic mineral resources, as well as foreign currency reserves. This development will boost our confidence and pride in our own national currency and further help protect our currency from attack by the country’s detractors. This is our currency; we all have a duty to support this transformational development," he emphasised.

In line with the Government's mantra of decentralising national events, President Mnangagwa announced that the next year’s Independence Day celebrations will be hosted in Midlands Province, ensuring that the spirit of national pride and unity is spread across all regions of Zimbabwe.

CCC Timba faction plots violence against Ncube:
https://www.hararepost.co.zw/en/the-news/local-news/8510-ccc-timba-faction-plots-violence-against-ncube
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In an escalating conflict within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), the faction led by Jameson Timba is reportedly planning to sabotage a series of meetings organized by Welshman Ncube, the leader of another faction within the same party.

According to a reliable source within the CCC, animosity is brewing over Ncube's continued leadership, which some members consider detrimental to that party’s progress.

"The Timba faction feels that Ncube, whom they see as a political loser, has no place leading any faction of the opposition movement. Their discontent is becoming increasingly aggressive," the source disclosed to this publication.

The source said that the discord seems to be fuelled by deep-seated resentment towards Ncube’s approach and his plans to conduct a nationwide tour to bolster support for his faction.

“Ncube is gearing up for a whirlwind of meetings across the country, but we have learned that certain elements from Timba’s faction are rallying thugs to violently disrupt these gatherings. It’s a calculated move to undermine Ncube’s visibility and influence within the party,” the source added.

According to the source, the friction between the Timba and Ncube factions is not solely about leadership but also involves financial disputes linked to the Political Parties Finance Act. Both factions are vying for access to Government-disbursed funds, intensifying their rivalry.

“With money at stake, the battle for control has reached fever pitch. Both leaders see the funds as crucial for their respective political plans and neither of them is willing to back down,” explained the source.

The confrontation has reportedly spilled over into social media, where members of the Timba faction are vocally criticising Ncube.

Just yesterday, the faction's discontent was vividly displayed in a WhatsApp group titled ‘Chamisa the Real Deal’, where Ncube was labelled a traitor.

“These social media attacks are a new frontline in the factional warfare within CCC. It’s becoming a platform for airing grievances and rallying support against Ncube,” the source mentioned.

Political analyst Calvin Chitsunge said that this internal turmoil poses a significant threat to the cohesion and effectiveness of the CCC as it prepares for upcoming electoral challenges.

“The ongoing disputes could potentially weaken the opposition’s ability to present a unified front against rival political forces, undermining its campaign and the broader opposition movement in the country,” said Chitsunge.

Chitsunge added that CCC leaders and members alike should seek a peaceful resolution to these conflicts to focus on their common goals and the greater good of their political cause.
