Truck driver gets 4 years for causing crash that killed 9

A truck driver who was convicted for causing an accident which claimed nine lives in Ruwa has been handed a four-year jail term.

Derrick John Chitope was arraigned before Epworth magistrate Tafadzwa Miti.

He will, however, serve an effective two-year jail term.

Chitope was also prohibited from driving heavy vehicles for life.

US$900,000 allegedly vanishes from Rufaro Marketing

HARARE City Council top officials blew over US$900 000 collected from Rufaro Marketing.

This was uncovered in an ongoing Commission of Inquiry into the governance of the Harare City Council.

This Wednesday, Harare City Council chamber secretary, Mr Warren Chiwawa appeared before the commission to answer allegations of corruption within Rufaro Marketing.

The investigation heard that since 2022, Rufaro Marketing, a Harare City Council subsidiary collected over US$1 million in revenue,only US$63 000 was remitted.

The allegations have raised concerns about the misappropriation of funds and potential corruption, with the Commission of Inquiry's evidence leader, Mr Thabani Mpofu ordering the immediate suspension of two board members; Ngoni Chimbalu and Juma Ulete.

In response, Chiwawa said he is not able to suspend his colleagues.

“I don’t have the powers to suspend the two but I can only make recommendations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chiwawa will be back before the commission inquiry on the 26th of this month, where the Commission is expected to take him to task on corruption allegations being raised against Ulete and Chimbalu, who are Rufaro Marketing board members responsible for operations and finance.

Serial killer escapes from prison

Kenyan national, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who was arrested on suspicion of killing several women and dumping their bodies in an old quarry, has escaped from police custody in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital this Tuesday.

Khalusha was arrested last month in connection with the discovery of at least six bodies wrapped in plastic bags in Kware quarry, which is now used as a rubbish dump and according to the police he admitted to killing 42 women including his wife.

The five Wedza women who assaulted a girl and posted the video on social media have been convicted.

The five who included four juveniles under the age of 18 and one aged 19 years were found guilty of all four counts of aggravated indecent assault, cyberbullying, unlawful detention and assault which they committed in Wedza on the 4th of July.

19-year-old Vimbai Mike and a 17-year-old, who is married and has two children, were sentenced to an effective five years in jail each for indecent assault, one year for cyberbullying for posting her video on social media, one year for unlawful detention and another one year for assault which will, however, run concurrently within the 5-year effective term.

Govt on high alert as Mpox spreads across Africa

THE Government says the country is on high alert to prevent the spread of Mpox formerly Monkey pox following a surge in global cases.

As the global Mpox outbreak continues to spread, over 16,000 cases and more than 500 deaths have been recorded in 75 countries.

Although Zimbabwe has not recorded any cases of Mpox, the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, says the government is not taking any chances, hence taking proactive measures to prevent the virus from entering its borders.

He spoke this Tuesday on the sidelines of the India-Africa Business Conclave in New Delhi, where Zimbabwe is seeking investments in various sectors which include health.

“Monkeypox is a threat to health systems in the region maybe in Africa as a whole. As you know about a week ago the Africa CDC declared Mpox a public health emergency with WHO declaring it a public health emergency.

"There are certain countries that have had Mpox for years. It has been endemic there like the DRC, but we have seen other countries which were not affected by Mpox for years having new cases. What we have been told is that there is a new strain which is a bit more virulent and this has not only affected countries in Africa, but some countries in Europe have also witnessed these new cases of Mpox.

"We as a country of Zimbabwe, of course, are part and parcel of the SADC region, Because movement is not restricted, we can end up seeing these cases escalating, but we are on high alert. We have alerted all our port health posts to be on the lookout, and, we are installing thermal scanners where you just walk through and the body temperature can be picked up and if one‘s temperature is up there is a holding room where they can be interrogated and examined.
