Distress fund script
Following the disturbances of January 14, 2019 which resulted in massive looting and destruction of both government and private properties, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) visited Bulawayo metropolitan province which was worst affected and assessed the losses with the aim of assisting communities to access basic commodities which had been looted from all the shops.
Shops in the western suburbs of the second capital city were not only looted but some also burnt down leaving millions vulnerable to hunger as they could not access essential groceries such as maize meal, salt, rice and flour.
Government responded swiftly and established an inter-ministerial committee charged with assessing the quantum of the losses which businesses suffered. The losses suffered by business, according to the inter-ministerial committee, stands at over 19 million dollars.
The government also moved in and availed a 30 million dollar loan facility to assist victims restock and repair destroyed infrastructure. Funds under this facility would be released to suppliers who will then provide the needed goods to the affected business entities.
To ensure that the milling sector which happens to be the supplier of major basic goods such as mealie meal, rices, baking flour and salt, accesses the funds, GMAZ recently organized an exhibition gala in Bulawayo, where it invited the local business community. The purpose of the exhibition gala was to bring together suppliers and buyers and possibly seal business deals.
GMAZ also invited the minister of Industry and Commerce, Honorable Mangaliso Ndlovu to explain the terms and conditions of the loan facility.
In his address minister Ndlovu applauded GMAZ for serving the nation during the period of food shortages which was created by the barbaric January 14 riots.
Mr Tafadzwa Musarara, the GMAZ chairman, assured the business community that millers have the capacity to meet national supply demand.
