Stella Rambisai Chiweshe, real name Stella Nekati, was a popular Zimbabwean mbira player and arguably the first pioneer of Chimurenga music.
She made history by becoming the first successful female artist to venture into the male-dominated music industry.
Background
She was born on the 8th of July 1964 in Mujumi Village, Mhondoro, about 45 miles from the capital city, Harare .
She was married to a German national, Peter Reich, and spent most of her time in Germany.
Reich died in December 2022 when Chiweshe was already unwell in Zimbabwe.
Her daughter Virginia Mukwesha is also a musician having been taught to play mbira since she was 12.
Music career
Stella Rambisai Nekati Chiweshe defied the odds and the tradition when she started learning to play the mbira, an instrument which culturally forbidden to women.
She also risked arrest as she was part of the underground Shona cultural activities that had been banned by the colonial regime.
Chiweshe's passion for the instrument caused her to learn it between 1966-1969. In those days she was labelled 'loose' as she spent most of her time with men who were teaching him.
After mastering it she went on to sign a deal with Teal Record Company (now Grammar Records that saw her release her first single 'Kasahwa' which went gold.
Chiweshe went on to record more than 20 singles with the same company between 1975 and 1978 but they were never promoted hence they were never played on the radio.
This only made her stronger as she went on to form her first band 'Earthquake' in 1979 after Teal refused to record mbira music.
Her talent promoted her to assume a leading role as a mbira player and dancer in the National Dance Company of Zimbabwe in 1981. The group toured many countries holding shows.

HAPPY UNITY DAY ZIMBABWE BLACK UMFOLOSI Black Umfolosi is Zimbabwe's oldest imbube acapella outfit. The group is popular for the hit song that they released in 1990 titled "Unity". So successful has been the group that it has been able to tour most parts of the world establishing itself as a true African musical ambassador. Based at the Enkundleni Cultural Centre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Black Umfolosi take their name from the Umfolosi River that flows through the Natal province in South Africa. BACKGROUND Formed in March 1982, the Group takes the name from Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa to where their ancestors can be traced. Since then the group has been growing from strength to strength, their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during their brilliantly choreographed shows with full range of movements from subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping!!! Their famous Gumboot Dances showcase the traditional styles of Southern African mining regions and are a particular crowd pleaser. Black Umfolosi describe their music as a vocal newspaper through which they communicate issues of HIV/AIDS, Political Tolerance, Religion, Heritage, Culture and Globalization. Black Umfolosi sing a cappella music which is a rich woven tapestry of harmonies grounded on a bed of Zimbabwean melodies. HISTORY Black Umfolosi was formed in 1982 at school by peers trying to get together through arts for fun. It was in 1982 while at George Silundika Secondary School in Nyamandlovu that as mates, they started singing imbube. They just did it out of absolute fun and entertainment. The group was just large with 32 students. Teachers and fellow students would come and listen to them singing. One of the group members decided to make the group official by giving it a name and that is how the outfit was ch
Kasongo Band is a Zimbabwean music group led by Ketai Muchawaya. The band's songs revolve around the revolution before the country gained independence and other issues that affected people's lives after the country was ruled by blacks. Kasongo Band was formed in 1977 and comprised of seven former Zimbabwean liberation fighters who were forced to seek exile in Tanzania before Zimbabwe’s independence. The band's music is a great example of chimurenga from Zimbabwe, but with a distinctive sound shaped by local influences of other East African music that they picked up while in exile in Tanzania. After returning to Zimbabwe in 1980, the band scored a number of hit singles throughout the 80s, while their 1989 album Soko Murehwa sold more than 45,000 copies, leading them to a Group of the Year award from a local club. The band name on the back of the cover is Knowledge Kunenyathi & Kassongo Band, highlighting the leader of the band, Knowledge K. Kunenyathi. He went solo shortly after this record was cut. Some of his songs were featured on the Zimbabwe Frontline Three. Ketai, the band's original leader, had already gone on to form the Simba Brothers together with Peter Majoni. Kentai wanted Knowledge to join the new Simba Brothers, but Knowledge wanted his chance to front the band. When he left to go solo, Marko took over the band. The original seven band members were: Ketai Muchawaya; Knowledge K. Kunenyathi; Marko Sibanda; Lee Roy Lunga; Major Mirirai; Fainos Mapurisa; & Rex MotoMoto. As well as Knowledge, Ketai Muchawaya & Marko Sibanda both went on to have solo careers. Lee Roy Lunga later joined the Chazezesa Challengers. During their history, there were in all eighteen members of Kasongo Band. Although they broke up years ago, Kasongo Band remains known today for their militant chimurenga style and their greatest hits album is called Kasongo Hits. was released by Gramma Records in 2001. Today all seventeen of the eighteen band members are dead. Knowledge K. K
Founded by guitarist Rise Kagona in April 1980 and fronted by Biggie Tembo, Bhundu Boys were a hugely successful Zimbabwean guitar/rock/folk band. The band is named after the previous occupation of their charismatic frontman, songwriter and lead singer: "bhundu boys" (bhundu = bush) were largely underage runners/messengers for the guerillas during the liberation struggle at the time. The band scored an unprecendented four number-one singles between 1981 and 1984, which got the attention of the international media. Travelling to Scotland in 1986 and championed and promoted by the likes of Elvis Costello, John Peel, Andy Kershaw, and Eric Clapton, the band even got as far as opening for Madonna at Wembley Stadium on three nights in 1987. However, their new and more westernised sound didn't find as much favour with audiences as their past offerings, and following some disapproved shenanigans by Biggie Tembo and his subsequent firing from the band in 1990 and then the deaths of other members, the group slowly lost momentum and disappeared from the scene. In 2001, a compilation of songs recorded at Harare's Shed Studios between 1982 and 1986 titled "The Shed Sessions" was released. #DidYouKnow System Tazvida started his career with the Spides Band and he was the lead singer. From the Spides Band, he joined Muza's Combination up until 1989 together with Tineyi Chikupo. He became a household name after the release of Mabhauwa which was written by Cephas Karushanga who was also a member of the Khiama Boys as well as Alick Macheso. After having made an impact backed by the Khiama Boys, Tazvida and Karushanaga left Khiama Boys and formed Mabhauwa Express. The Tazvida-Karushanga led Mabhauwa Express which flopped. Tazvida went on to join the Sungura Boys led by Ephraim Joe who is believed to be the pioneer of Sungura music. In 1993, he formed his own Chazezesa Challengers together with his young brother Peter Tazvida, Leeroy Lunga and Lucky Mumiriki. The band mixed elements of Sungura and traditional sounds, creating an appealing blend that resonated well with mostly the rural folk. Backed by his Chazezesa Challengers which was also known as Boys dzeSmoko. Tazvida's career blossomed as he released a string of hits. Some of the songs which became popular include Mushandi ndiMambo, Anodyiwa Haataure and Dai Hanzvadzi Yairoorwa amongst others. The albums released by Tazvida and his band in the mid 1990s were amongst the top selling albums during this time. Rudo Tsika Nemagariro sold more than 20 000 copies, while 'Mutunhu Unemago' sold 30 000 copies. At the time of his death, Tazvida was amongst the top 5 selling artists in Zimbabwe. As the title of the albums indicate, Tazvida's music was social commentary mixed with humorous lyrics and satirical subjects.Tazvida's music resonated well with the rural and farm folk whose way of life he included in his songs. These people were never noticed since they lacked the buying power, but Tazvida revolutionalised this notion. Tazvida popularised these very people and helped link them to the urban folk which had a different lifestyle altogether.
