Disability Rights Organisation Calls for Inclusive Budgets
By Nomagugu Konke
Disability Rights Community Based Organization, signsofhopezim Trust has called for a disability-responsive National Budget. Speaking at the sidelines of the Budget Priority Setting Meeting in Harare, Signs of Hope Trust Director, Samantha Sibanda urged the government to incorporate budget allocations that directly target persons with disabilities if their economic situation is to change. Sibanda emphasized that persons with disabilities are rights holders and their needs must be considered in all legislative processes.
"We have seen a worrying trend where the economic costs of disability are often overlooked in national budgets," Sibanda stated. "These costs can include expenses for assistive devices, transportation, and specialized care. By neglecting these costs, we are perpetuating exclusion and poverty among people with disabilities."
Sibanda highlighted the need to conduct a comprehensive study to assess the economic impact of disability and develop strategies to address these costs. She also emphasized the importance of embedding disability inclusion into the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
"A disability-inclusive budget is essential for ensuring that persons with disabilities can fully participate in society," Sibanda concluded. "By recognizing and addressing the economic costs of disability, we can create a more equitable and inclusive nation."
