So proud to see this guy, Kaykid Umfanomsotho, continuously leveling up his art in the music industry! He was one of the first artists I met back in my early days as an arts journalist, and honestly, I was drawn in like a moth to a flame—or maybe more like a curious cat to a laser pointer.

The talent in this industry is abundant, but back then, recognition for Mat South was about as common as finding a needle in a haystack (a very trendy, music-filled haystack, mind you). I’m just glad to say I’ve played a small part in this adventure! I’m still out here doing my thing, pushing talent and managing artists through my passion-driven brand, The Creatives Magazine.

And let’s not forget, Umfanomsotho is the humble guy who proves that hard work and a little bit of flair go a long way! Keep shining my boy. ✅❣️🎤✨Be sure to hit that subscribe button on his channel! https://youtube.com/-_umfanomsotho?si=Y8xElF1PsONQ1Jm4

I want to thank Steve Dyer, South Africa based musicians for coming to Bulawayo and for his brilliant performance during the celebration of Jeys Marabini's 34 years in the music industry.

I also really appreciate him leading the empowering workshop on arts and identity.

It had been a long time since he had visited Bulawayo, and the experience proved to be rewarding. Despite the limited time he had to rehearse, he felt a strong connection with the musicians he was playing alongside, as well as with the audience.

In the world of music, seizing opportunities is crucial, and he was pleased to see good representation at the workshop, where attendees demonstrated a genuine desire to engage and express their viewpoints.

He was encouraged to learn about the cultural office in Bulawayo, which provided musicians with a platform to address cultural issues. He emphasized that this initiative should not be seen as a means of financial handouts but rather as a vital cultural resource.

One aspect that remained unaddressed in the workshop was the idea that in music projects and performances, an artist is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain.

He stressed the importance of tuning instruments properly, playing with dynamics, and listening closely to fellow musicians. When it comes to recording, he advised taking the time to mic instruments well, as many smaller elements contribute significantly to the overall picture.

Thank you Steve

Madlela Skhobokhobo’s son distances self from dad

Basotho deeply explains that one of the main challenges that he faces in the arts industry is that of being labelled as a priviledged young man because his father is also in the industry and it is difficult for people to relate to him without his father in the picture. “The biggest problem that I face is that of being put under the notion that you are Madlela’s son, it’s hard for people to listen to me as a creative, as an individual, without involving my father, I tend to be viewed as someone with privileges because my father is well established in the industry. I wish that people listen to me, without mentioning or referring to my father, I want them to listen to my sound, get my angle of creativity, relate to it and totally divorce it from the works of my father and his influence, by attaching my works to those for Madlela people are killing my craft because I want people to hear me for who I am not in relation to my father”.

Meet a Global Music Giant and Entrepreneur ----- Jeys Marabini

When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a poet and Harvard Professor, said, “Music is the universal language of mankind,” he largely summed up Jeys Marabini’s music. Through his music, he unites people from all over the world, connecting them to their spiritual world, and unpacking African history, customs, and beliefs, particularly Zimbabwean culture. Jeys employs a combination of traditional and modern instruments to complement the melodies, rhythms, and storytelling; as a result, his music has universal appeal and can be related to by people from all over the world. Through his music, he is able to emphasise the importance of preserving one’s culture and knowing one’s identity, as well as the importance of passing down such wisdom from generation to generation.

Of particular interest is how he connects with the spiritual world through his music where he acknowledges God as supreme and links people to their ancestral roots and ensures that African spirituality is indeed kept sanctified and given all the necessary respect it deserves. Originating from the mountains of Matabeleland, where tradition and culture hold strong, Jeys Marabini’s music transcends boundaries. It appeals to both young and old, leaving audiences in awe and prompting standing ovations worldwide. His music is not just about entertainment, it moves people, it arouses strong emotions, it unites, it rejuvenates, it cures, it comforts, it praises, it celebrates, it is informative as well as educative. In 2024, Jeys marks 34 years in the music industry, a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
