NACB Zimbabwe CELEBRATES WORLD RADIO DAY WITH COMMUNITY RADIO STATIONS

By Tapiwa Tapiwa N Chitombo

To commemorate World Radio Day 2025, NACB Zimbabwe created a platform to recognize the outstanding contributions of community radio stations in addressing climate change. The organization launched a Short Video Challenge, encouraging community radio presenters to showcase their creativity and passion for climate awareness.

The response was overwhelming, with numerous participants submitting inspiring videos that highlighted the critical role of community radios in driving climate action. After a thrilling round of public voting and engagement, the winners were announced.

Lady D from Radio Bukalanga took home the top prize of $150, while Cheriel Dzobo from Vemuganga Community Radio was awarded the runner-up prize of $50. NACB Zimbabwe congratulated the winners and expressed gratitude to all participants for their remarkable contributions.

"The creativity, storytelling, and passion for climate awareness showcased by our community radio partners have been truly inspiring," said NACB Zimbabwe on their page.

World Radio Day is an annual celebration of the power of radio to promote diversity, inclusivity, and social change. This year's theme, "Radio and Climate Change," highlighted the critical role of radio in addressing the climate crisis and promoting sustainable development.

NACB Zimbabwe's Short Video Challenge was a resounding success, demonstrating the creativity and commitment of community radio stations in Zimbabwe. As the country continues to address the challenges of climate change, community radio stations remain a vital source of information, education, and empowerment for local communities.

ZIMBABWE'S COMMUNITY RADIO STATIONS MAKE WAVES IN PROMOTING LOCAL LANGUAGES AND CLIMATE AWARENESS

Story By Tapiwa N Chitombo

Zimbabwe's community radio landscape has witnessed significant growth since the launch of Avuxeni FM in Chiredzi in February 2022. Today, the country boasts 14 licensed community radio stations, each promoting local languages, talents, and development. These stations have been making a tangible impact in their respective communities, particularly on climate issues, which was the focus of this year's World Radio Day theme, "Radio and Climate Change".

The 14 community radio stations are spread across the country, catering to diverse communities and languages. The stations include Kasambabezi FM (Kariba), Ntepe-Manama (Gwanda), Radio Bukalanga (Plumtree), Nyangani FM (Inyanga), Madziwa FM (Shamva), Lyeja FM (Hwange), Twasumpuka FM (Binga), Bayethe FM (Matobo), Avuxeni FM (Chiredzi), Chimanimani FM (Chimanimani), Lotsha FM (Beitbridge), Ndau FM (Chipinge), Vemuganga FM (Chipinge), and Ingqanga FM (Mbembesi). Most of these stations are already on air, while others are preparing to launch their services.

These community radio stations have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to promoting climate awareness and sustainable practices in their communities. To acknowledge their dedication and hard work, nominations for awards are being considered for the volunteer staff and the stations themselves. This recognition will not only motivate the stations to continue their good work but also encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

The impact of these community radio stations extends beyond climate awareness. They provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talents, promote local languages and culture, and address community-specific issues. By doing so, they foster a sense of community and social cohesion, which is essential for development and progress.

As Zimbabwe continues to navigate the challenges of climate change, community radio stations remain a vital source of information, education, and empowerment for local communities. The growth of community radio in Zimbabwe is a positive step towards promoting diversity, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
