Centenary Park gets facelift
THE Bulawayo City Council, in partnership with various organisations, is rehabiliting the iconic Centenary Park following complaints by residents’ associations that the recreational facility was falling apart.
One of the organisations assisting council, Weloveu Foundation conducted a tour on Sunday ahead of a planned clean-up campaign.
Ward 5 councillor Felix Mhaka said rehabilitation work will include replanting flowers and lawns.
“We appreciate organisations like the Weloveu Foundation which saw it fit to mobilise youths to clean up the park. Council is facing manpower and equipment shortages, which is slowing down the process,” Mhaka said.
Council has eight permanent workers taking care of the park, but they are struggling to cope with the workload.
“More boreholes are needed to water the plants and enable the re-planting of lawns and flowers. By December, we hope that the park will be rehabilitated,” Mhaka added.

Mnangagwa illegitimate: Zanu-PF member
PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy as both national and Zanu PF leader has been challenged at the High Court by a party official, who is seeking nullification of the November 19, 2017 central committee meeting which appointed him leader.
Zanu PF member, Sybeth Musengezi yesterday filed an application at the High Court citing the ruling party and Mnangagwa as the second and third respondents, respectively.
Musengezi was secretary for business development and liaison, Muzinda WaMugabe district, Zone 4, Harare province before the November 2017 coup.
Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu, acting political commissar Patrick Chinamasa, former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and Ignatius Chombo were also cited as respondents.
Mnangagwa was unanimously appointed Zanu PF first secretary on November 19, 2017 during a special session of the central committee by senior party members, following a military coup that ousted the late former President Robert Mugabe.
Then High Court judge Justice George Chiweshe ruled that the military’s intervention to stop “those around” Mugabe from taking over power was constitutionally permissible and lawful.
In the High Court application, Musengezi, who is represented by Mbidzo Muchadehama and Makoni Legal Practioners, is seeking a court order that Mphoko, cited as the fifth respondent, should take necessary steps in line with the Zanu PF constitution to convene and preside over a special party congress to fill top leadership positions within three months of the granting of the order.
“Whereupon, after reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel for the parties, it is ordered that a declaratur be and is hereby issued that the special session of the central committee of the first respondent convened on November 19, 2017, at the party headquarters in Harare from 10:00 to 1600hrs, was ultra vires the provisions of the constitution of the first respondent and, t
UN envoy itinerary raises red flag
BY MOSES MATENGA
OBSERVERS yesterday questioned the itinerary of the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur Alena Douhan, released by government, which excludes opposition parties and civic society.
Douhan, who is from Belarus, is in the country for 10 days to probe the impact of sanctions on human rights in Zimbabwe.
According to the itinerary, she is expected to meet Cabinet ministers, the central bank, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission and Chief Justice Luke Malaba, among others.
There is no indication that she would meet with civil society or the opposition.
Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi referred questions on whether Douhan would meet stakeholders outside government to the Foreign Affairs ministry.
Foreign Affairs deputy minister David Musabayana said: “We agreed not to manage or interfere with her interactions.”
United Kingdom-based law expert and political analyst Alex Magaisa said Douhan’s itinerary pointed to a predetermined outcome.
“What Zanu PF is doing is akin to calling a tsikamutanda (witchhunter) to the village and telling him which households to enter and which ones to sidestep and all along they already gave him a tokoloshe (goblin) which he will announce as his finding at a targeted clansman’s homestead,” Magaisa said.
“In other words, the so-called special rapporteur who comes from Belarus, one of the world’s biggest human rights violators, which is also facing sanctions, is hardly an honest broker. Her itinerary, which is brazenly one-sided, is a clear indicator that the script has already been written in advance,” he said.
Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said the envoy would hold a joint Press briefing with the government after her mission.
Charamba said the special rapporteur came at the invitation of the Zimbabwean government.
“After collating information, the rapporteur will hold a joint Press conference with Zimbabwe where she will share her preliminary find
Chiweshe man killed over missing goat
POLICE in Chiweshe have launched a manhunt for three male villagers who allegedly bashed a suspected goat thief to death on Saturday.
Denmore Taruvinga, Henry Chaparadza and Aluwis Chigure are said to be on the run in connection with a murder case after they allegedly bashed Jokonia Makumbe to death, accusing him of stealing a goat.
Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the case.
“I can confirm a murder case in Chiweshe where three male adults assaulted the now-deceased, killing him on the spot,” Mundembe said.
“We are appealing for information which can lead to the arrest of the suspects.”
It is alleged that the trio teamed up after receiving a tip-off that Makumbe had stolen their goat.
They dragged him from a certain homestead where he was drinking to his home while beating him up.
Upon arrival, they searched his homestead and could not find any goat meat.
They took him away from his house and fatally assaulted him.
The body of the deceased was found by his brother Paradzai Magwede, who filed a police report after being advised by neighbours that he was killed by the trio.
Surprisingly, the goat was found in a bush hanging on a tree.
Police warned members of the public not to take the law into their own hands by meting instant justice.
Storm over Manyame RDC land
A FAMILY in Murisa Phase 2, Manyame Rural District Council, has clashed with native inhabitants of the now urbanised Kuora Village over stand number 1065A allocated to it by the council after a series of relocations.
Fungai Duri and wife Shelter claim the late Kuora village head Martin Kuora’s son, Kenneth, was blocking them from occupying a stand allocated to them by the council. Shelter alleged that Kuora hired bouncers to intimidate and block her family from occupying the piece of land.
“Council gave us stand 1065A and Kuora hired bouncers to stop us from digging a well and build a toilet claiming that the area was Mai Hope’s field,” Shelter said.
“Surprisingly, he also said he had sold that piece of land and the new occupant was going to start construction. We had gathered money to build the main house, but we continue to be stopped and our lease is expiring this year.”
She said she had the legal papers which show that the stand was allocated to the Duri family.
“This continues to worry me because I pay rates every month,” Shelter said.
Kuora defended his actions arguing that the native occupant of the piece of land was supposed to be paid 25% before stands were allocated to people.
“As long as the natives have not benefited, whoever has council papers will not build a house,” he said.
“It is not fair that people just come and get pieces of land when the original occupant has not yet benefited. I am a Kuora villager, so I should benefit from my father’s land no matter someone was given a form by the
council.
“So, we stopped Fungai and told him that he was not going to build a structure before Mai Hope gets her 25% benefit. We sat down with the council and it accepted that. This family does just not understand that. People should stop panicking and thinking that I am selling land.”
He claimed that he had already registered a complaint with Local Government minister July Moyo.

Chibuku Super Cup returns
THE Chibuku Super Cup resumes with mid-week clashes next Wednesday afternoon, as Dynamos take on Yadah in Group 1 of the competition at the National Sports Stadium.
The match will be preceded by Herentals and ZPC Kariba in a morning kick-off.
The Chibuku Super Cup was suspended in July following a spike in COVID-19 cases, which forced the Sports and Recreation Commission to put the tournament on hold, with some games postponed as clubs concerned had been hit by the
pandemic.
On Thursday next week, Harare City will host Caps United in another Group 1 match, with the Green Machine looking to lift themselves back to second position.
Dynamos lead that group with 14 points from six games, having won four of their matches and drawn two and look set for a quarter-final berth, with competition still open for Yadah (eight points), Caps United (seven), Harare City and ZPC Kariba on six points.
At Barbourfields Stadium in Group 2, log leaders Chicken Inn take on Bulawayo City on Wednesday, hoping to add to their seven points.
Highlanders, who clash with Bulawayo Chiefs on Thursday, have the same points as Chicken Inn.
Chicken Inn and Highlanders are likely to pull through to the knockout stage.
In Group 3 also on Wednesday, Cranborne Bullets and Manica Diamonds clash at Sakubva Stadium, while Black Rhinos will host Tenax at the same venue in the afternoon.
That group is led by new Premiership boys Cranborne Bullets with five points after three games, with Black Rhinos and Tenax tied on four points and Manica Diamonds on three points, rendering competition in the group
open.
Ngezi Platinum Stars were on fire before the tournament was iced and lead Group 4. They square off with Triangle next Wednesday as champions FC Platinum clash with top league returnees WhaWha at Mandava Stadium.

Cops Bash Zim Driver For Refusing To Pay R2k Bribe
By A Correspondent- South African Police have beaten up a Zimbabwean cross-border bus driver for refusing to pay a R2000 bribe.
The incident happened last Thursday in the Hammanskraal area along the N1 highway.
Mr Raison Mufuka, an employee of Devine Star buses was handcuffed on the bus’ trailer and allegedly assaulted by three police officers.
After which, he was also detained along with four crew members at Themba Police Station in the same area.
The five were later released from police custody after the prosecution in that area refused to prosecute them for lack of evidence.
The assault incident was captured on video by other motorists and has already gone viral on social media.
Mr Mufuka said he got some injuries on his mouth and both hands and was experiencing chest pains due to the beating.
“We were travelling towards Johannesburg when we were intercepted by traffic police soon after the Hammanskraal toll gate, just before Pretoria along the N1 highway at around 8am on August 26,” he said.
“The bus had only five people including myself and other crew members. The police officers detained us for four hours at the road block.
“They accused me of violating traffic rules and demanded a bribe of R2000, which I told them I did not have. The three police officers then threatened to impound the bus,” said Mr Mufuka.
He said the police officers ordered him to drive to the police station, but along the way they disappeared and he stopped along the road as he was not sure of the directions.
He said they returned and handcuffed him between the trailer and the bus and took turns to assault him.
The distraught driver said the bus crew was later taken to Themba Police Station where they were detained for four days before being taken to court.
“At the police station, they falsely claimed that I had assaulted one of them and that I was carrying border jumpers while failing to comply with traffic regu

In movie style, two ladies from Bulawayo allegedly teamed up and thoroughly bashed their two-timing married boyfriend after discovering that he was double-crossing them.
The dramatic incident happened at the BCC-run Barrow Swimming Pool parking area.
According to B-Metro a woman who only identified herself as Sino was allegedly alerted by her friend that her boyfriend Antony Mdhlongwa was at BCC with one of his string of girlfriends only identified as W.
Following up on her friend’s tip-off, Sino went to BCC and found Antony sitting with his other girlfriend Patricia and her child in the car.
Infuriated, Sino reportedly started pummelling Antony with open hands on the face while accusing him of cheating on her.
As if a beating from Sino wasn’t enough, Patricia allegedly joined in. They took turns to thoroughly beat their two-timing lover with open hands.
In an effort to evade the camera and full glare of passersby who were watching as the full drama unfolded, a disgraced Antony removed his shirt and covered his face as the two angry ladies continued raining blows on him
Speaking after the incident, a close friend to Sino said what angered her the most was the fact that she had tried to terminate her secret love affair with Antony, but he had convinced her otherwise.
“Bro she has been telling him that she is fed up with his cheating shenanigans and due to that they have to stop the affair, but he would not agree to that and told her that he wants to marry her because he loves her. He told Patricia that they broke up. He would be doing so in order to sleep with both of them,” said the friend. -iharare.com
