TRANSPORT MINISTER URGES CALM AS ZAMBIAN TRUCK DRIVERS FACE ATTACKS IN DRC

By Steward Simutowe

Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, has described the alleged attacks and abductions of Zambian truck drivers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as extremely serious.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Tayali explained that rushing into quick interventions, such as diverting trucks to alternative routes bypassing the DRC, would be ineffective, as such measures could disrupt trade between the two countries.

He noted that Zambia and the DRC share strong trade ties, adding that any disruption would negatively affect both countries, with the DRC likely to feel the impact more due to its limited logistical capacity.

Mr Tayali further said proposals to establish a dry port where Zambian traders could deposit goods for collection by DRC-based logistics companies had been noted, but stated that the DRC currently lacks the logistical sophistication required to implement such an arrangement effectively.

The minister also warned those behind the alleged attacks to desist, stressing that continued violence could severely disrupt cross-border trade, adding that Zambian truck drivers do not deserve such inhumane and unscrupulous treatment.

UPND CONFIDENT OF RE-ELECTION, CITES DEVELOPMENT RECORD

By Steward Simutowe

United Party for National Development (UPND) Deputy National Youth Chairman in charge of Politics and Mobilization, Trevor Mwiinde, says the party has achieved a lot of programs and deserves to be voted back into office come August 2026.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Mwiinde disclosed that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) alone has enabled Zambia to become a construction hub because it has been enhanced from K1.6 million to K40 million.

Mr Mwiinde says the party may not be perfect, but it is the best when it comes to policies lined up, which are aimed at developing Zambia.

He adds that the party leaders have now gained so much experience in the past years they've been in government, adding that they will now do more once elected in 2026.

The youth Leader has appealed to the youth in the country to take advantage of various opportunities the government has created to better their lives.

CHAMBISHI PENSION FUND TRANSFER SPARKS CONTROVERSY AMONG WORKERS

By Steward Simutowe

Chambishi based good governance activist Chikabala Kaleta has officially written to Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS) Management to express his concern over the controversial pension fund transfer for workers.

‎Some unionized employees of CCS have opposed the transfer of their benefits from Mukuba Pension Trust to Longhorn Pension Trust Fund implemented late in 2025.

‎Mr. Kaleta has told CCS Management that the pension scheme transfer has generated dissatisfaction and complaints from concerned workers.

‎He said failure to resolve this matter will compel employees to consider seeking legal redress to protect their pension rights.

‎Meanwhile, CCS Management has released a memo explaining the pension scheme transfer and assured employees that their contributions are secure.

2246 CHAIRMAN CHALLENGES OPPOSITION FOR LACK OF CRITICAL VOICE

BY Steward Simutowe

United party for National Development UPND 2246 Mobilization Campaign team National Chairman, Jonathan Kanyungulu, has expressed disappointment with the opposition for allegedly failing to provide credible checks and balances to the current government.

In a statement made available to the media on Thursday, Mr Kanyungulu slammed the opposition, who have been circulating information that President Hakainde Hichilema was sick when, in fact not.

President Hakainde Hichilema was reported in some sections of the media to have been very sick, but on Tuesday, the Head of State held a public rally in Choma District of Southern Province.

Mr Kanyungulu says many Zambians are very disappointed with the opposition because they expected them to be above board and be able to provide a clear roadmap on how they would handle issues the country is facing.

He adds that President Hichilema has raised the bar too high for the opposition, which is why they have failed to unite and work together.

Luanshya Central Member of Parliament, Lusale Simbao, has underscored the importance of taking good care of projects and equipment provided by the government through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

In a statement made available to Radio Chimwemwe News, Mr Simbao stated that the local government has invested heavily in various projects, including schools, clinics, roads, and solar-powered boreholes, aimed at driving development.

He cited Heroim and Baluba primary schools, where modern classrooms and flushable toilets have been constructed, restoring dignity to the learning institutions.

Mr Simbao appealed to community members to jealously guard these facilities, ensuring they benefit current and future generations.

Mr Simbao emphasized collective responsibility in maintaining the projects, saying the community will enjoy the benefits of these projects for years to come.

NDOLA BUS DRIVERS PROTEST NEW ROUTE RESTRICTIONS, CLAIM LIVELIHOOD THREATENED

By Chanda Chilebe Libuku

Some bus drivers in Ndola are up in arms over a new rule requiring them to load passengers only from designated bus stations in the central business district.

Drivers operating from Mulungushi and Chisokone bus stations claim the rule will slash their earnings, as they'll only load passengers from the stations once a day.

The drivers explained that the rule introduces "zones", barring them from operating beyond the town centre. For example, a bus from Lubuto township can't proceed to Chifubu township, and vice versa.

VEDRIMA president Mwaba Mumba says the leadership has agreed to allow drivers to operate freely after 10am daily.

Ndola District Commissioner Precious Njekwa has promised a meeting to address the drivers' concerns, advising them to engage authorities instead of protesting on the streets.
