CHIPEPO BREATHES LIFE INTO ZESCO AND NKANA ENCOUNTER DESPITE GAME LACKING THE AURA OF SEVEN YEARS AGO

By Desmond Katongo

There used to be a certain aura of invisibility built around the ‘Chicken’ George Lwandamina-led ZESCO United side of 2016 and 2018. The same could be said about their cross-town rivals Nkana, then led by Beston ‘Quicksilver’ Chambeshi.

This period was when Zambian football was in its perennial ascendancy, especially at the continental level. This was so by the four CAF slots that were bestowed upon the nation, largely owing to the exploits of these two club sides on the international stage.

In those three years, ‘Chicken’ George guided ZESCO United to the 2016 CAF Champions League semi-final finish and back-to-back league titles in 2017 and 2018.

At Nkana, ‘Quicksilver’ had awakened a sleeping giant that went on to stamp its mark in the CAF Confederations Cup going as far as a quarter-final finish in 2019 further retaining its authority at the domestic level.

These were the days of the magical Lazarous Kambole, prolific Winstone Kalengo, and Jesse Were, leading ZESCO’s attack while Kelvin Kampamba, Idriss Ilunga Mbombo and Walter Bwalya poured fear into any defence Nkana came up against.

A meeting of these two giants of the local game came an ounce close to producing similar memories of the much talked about past glory days of Zambian football when the local league commanded the nation's attention.

On Saturday the two rivals come face-to-face under very different circumstances. ZESCO United are under the tutelage of Acting Head Coach Emmanuel Siwale following the departure of his mentor and longtime friend Lwandamina.

Siwale and ZESCO United have had a decent start to the 2024/25 league campaign though their grip at the summit of the table is slowly loosening.

Of the twenty league matches Siwale has overseen, ZESCO United have claimed Nine wins, Nine draws and two loses.

A dramatic 2-2 draw against Nkwazi at week 19 saw the nine times league champions drop from first to third position with 33 points.

Nkana on the other hand seems to have struck Gold in Mwenya Chipepo. After a slow start to the season which saw them separate with Ian Bakala, the Wusakile Boys under Chipepo have taken the league by storm leapfrogging ZESCO United from the summit of the table with a better goal difference.

The league leaders under Chipepo have recorded nine victories, two draws and one loss. It’s a dream start for a manager whose record and impact on the domestic game sometimes lacks the recognition and respect it deserves.

ZESCO United and Nkana have in recent times laboured for success at the local and international scene. The Wusakile Boys last won the title in 2020 while the Ndola based league giants cantered away with the coveted trophy in 2021.

So, can the Chipepo and Siwale-led Nkana and ZESCO United sides revive the steam and excitement that often coloured this fixture?

“Certainly, the fixture is not up to the billing it used to be. Their rivalry and the quality of the players they had are not as good anymore. Only their fans have remained as powerful. Nkana is currently on the ascendancy and are favourites,” notes Pelmel Bondo an avid follower of the Zambian game and strong supporter of ZESCO United.

Veteran Sports Journalist Kalumiana Kalumiana believes the arrival of Chipepo has added an unexpected twist to a fixture that at the start of the season should have been a one-sided tussle.

“What would have been a mismatch or lopsided duel in the first half of the season has now suddenly metamorphosized into a befitting battle of the heavy weights. I think it will be the coach’s derby this time around. Unfancied but experienced Siwale against the coach of the moment Chipepo. Chipepo has proved his worth at Prison, and Power Dynamos.”

While Kalumiana believes players like quick and skilled winger Nduna Zulu could make a big difference for the Wusakile Boys, Wami Katanga a social media football blogger believes ZESCO United may utilise the experience of Thandi Mwape, Bennedict Chepeshi, to stop the likes of Idriss Mbombo.

“ZESCO United have arguably one of the best squads around and Siwale is spoiled for choice in every department. But I think the impact of Abraham Siankombo on his day could win them this match.”

Nkana will be coming into Saturday’s away fixture favourites considering their recent form and the tactical acumen of Chipepo.

“Nkana too have a good squad testament of their current fine form. Idris Mbombo is a proven player. The presence of Charles Zulu, Harrison Chisala and the defence pairing of Chitoshi Chinga and Clement Mwape has been quite steady and could prove vital,” Katanga said.

Nkana and ZESCO United may no longer be shaped in the image of Chambeshi and Lwandamina. However, what will be on display on Saturday 18 January 2025 at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium will be two bitter cross-town rivals hell-bent on outwitting each other on and off the pitch as the race for the title continues.

In his diplomatic and clever response to Alexander (presenter) during prime TV's special program dubbed "oxygen of Democracy" last night Mr Sichinga said Kabushi constituency was lagging behind in so many areas citing infrastructure development, gang groups, entrepreneurship as some of the areas he will prioritize addressing once elected as a member of parliamentary next year.

MAROONED TRUCKS IN NDOLA TO BE CLEARED UNDER EMERGENCY

By Stafrance Zulu

Government has effected emergency response to clear hundreds of trucks currently marooned between the stretch from Ndola's Mitengo area to Sakania Border.

The border is situated some 32 kilometres on the outskirts of Ndola, now a fast-growing border post between Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The affected trucks are all destined for DRC laden with assorted goods and fuel.

During a conducted tour of Mitengo through to the border post it was learnt that Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has been clearing 50 tanker trucks per day thereby leading to a long build up of trucks on Ndola-Mufulira Road.

And Ndola’s District Commissioner Joseph Phiri said the situation should be treated as an emergency.

He observed that the situation can breed diseases such as Cholera, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancies in the District.

He appealed to ZRA to clear as many trucks as possible so as to create space for the 50 fuel tankers that are supposed to be cleared per day.

“We will ensure that we clear 150 goods trucks per day. We are also going to engage the Ministry [ of Transport and Logistics] so that we can also clear at least 100 fuel tankers per day," he said.

Meanwhile the Zambia Army border centre officer Emmanuel Makoleka said the congestion on the road was also due to non-compliance by some truck drivers who are fond of skipping the legitimate queue.

And Copperbelt regional Commanding officer Dorothy Nyambe said the Zambia police service will work with the Zambia National Service in ensuring that security and order is maintained whilst decongesting the roads.

Ms Nyambe said officers will be mounted at three points; Ndola Road, Mitengo-Sakania Road and at the border post to man the process.

This according to a statement issued today by Copperbelt Province principal public relations officer Marilyn Rose.

FOREST RANGERS SHOOT THE BANKERS OUT IN THE HILLS

Forest 2-0 Zanaco

By Stafrance Zulu

Forest Rangers yesterday showed character by pulling themselves up from the doldrums of the relegation zone when they thwarted Zanaco FC before jubilant home fans at Dola Hill Stadium.

It was as if an academic lesson to orient the affluent Bankers that 'You don't get to the forest hills with money but without a gun'.

The spirited Fole Malembe took to the pitch knowing the match was highly contentious as both teams sit in the relegation zone.

Granted, it was not a mere win that both teams were fighting for but a sneaky exit from danger zone.

In a 15:00 hours kick-off, Week 19 game, barely 24 minutes in play, Francis Debra was brought down in the penalty box and the referee steadily awarded the Rangers a gun to shoot when he pointed to a penalty spot.

It was the experienced Kola who stepped up to converted a much needed lead on the 25th minute.

It took the magical left foot cracker off the 18-yard box by the seasoned defensive midfielder Benson Kolala to find a winner.

Forest Rangers head coach Ian Bakala said the team had done well and showed improvements following instructions given by the coaches. He said there was still room for growth and a long way to go.

"Our fight is to move out of that position. Looking at the team back then and now, you can tell the difference, and everyone understands the assignment," he said.

Forest Rangers now sit a slot above Zanaco at 16th position with 19 points while Zanaco has 17 points.

Malembe's next win may put them above NAPSA Stars with 21 points, Mutondo Stars with 20 points and Lumwana Radiants 20 points, supposing the three teams lose in their next fixtures.

If that happened, Fole Malembe will be smiling to the bank off the relegation zone in Week 20.
