ELECTROCUTION INCIDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA: POLICE RESPONSE

On the evening of April 6, 2024, at approximately 23:40 hours Chelston Police Station received a distressing report of electrocution from Ms. Mwanja Daka, aged 29, residing at house 86/24 Ng’ombe Chimulambe Street. Ms. Daka, a registered nurse at the University of Zambia clinic, reported a tragic incident involving Ms. Margret Chibesakunda, aged 22, a third-year student studying Public Administration at the University of Zambia.

According to the report, Ms. Chisabekunda was fatally electrocuted while attempting to plug her phone for charging. The incident occurred around 21:30 hours at October Block 2, Room 23, of the University of Zambia Great East Road Campus. Ms. Chibesakunda sustained severe burns on her neck, right elbow, and leg. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.

Following the unfortunate event, there was a spontaneous demonstration by University of Zambia students, obstructing the Great East Road with stones and drums. In response, police officers swiftly intervened to restore public order. The students were urged to mourn within the campus premises rather than disrupting public order. Fortunately, the students complied with the advice and returned to the University grounds.

The deceased's body was transferred to the University of Zambia clinic and subsequently deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.
The Zambia Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms.

Margret Chibesakunda during this difficult time. Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution incident is ongoing, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA EXPECTED IN MKUSHI

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is tomorrow expected in Mkushi district to launch the harvest of the early maize cereal and the planting of the production of winter maize.

Confirming the matter to ZANIS, Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe said President Hichilema will be on a one day working visit where he will interact with the people of Mkushi to appreciate the production of maize in the area following the persistent dry spell that characterized the current agriculture season.

The Permanent Secretary stated that President Hichilema will also discuss the replanting of winter maize.

Mr Mwanakampwe noted that Mkushi is an agriculture hub which also accounts for more than 60 percent of the country’s wheat production, stating that some farmers will be on standby to start wheat production.

The Central Province Permanent Secretary explained that the President is expected to land at Joe Daka’s farm at 10 hours, then later proceed to Sadote farm within the Mkushi farm block.

Mr Mwanakampwe added that the Head of State is also scheduled to interact with the people of Mkushi at the country club before he returns to Lusaka.

GOVERNMENT GUIDES MULTICHOICE TO KEEP ZNBC CHANNEL OPEN DURING AFCON

Government through the Ministry of Information and Media has written to Multichoice Zambia Limited and TopStar Communications Company Limited guiding them not to disconnect their clients on the ZNBC channel who have not paid
subscription during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) period.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says clients who have not paid subscription should not have their ZNBC channel disconnected.

Mr. Kawana says Multichoice and TopStar can disconnect all other channels except for ZNBC in order to allow all Zambians to watch the AFCON games.

The Information and Media Permanent Secretary says all those disconnected should have their ZNBC channel reopened.

Mr. Kawana said this today when he paid a courtesy call on Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Moonze at his office.

CUT OFF TAXES ON PADS

Like Condoms, Sanitary Pads Must Also Be Made Completely Tax-Free - Councillor Simataa

Kamwala Ward Councillor Mainda Simataa says Fiscal Justice for women entails that all forms of taxes levied on sanitary pads must be cut off to make them accessible and affordable for all women.

The civic leader was speaking during a workshop conducted for marketeers in Kamwala South by the Consumer Unit Trust Society (CUTS) in association with OXFAM.

The councillor said citizens would only appreciate the value of paying taxes if they derived an equivalent value in terms of service delivery, adding that goods such as sanitary pads consumed by special needs groups like women and girls, must be made tax free, just like condoms.

MUNDUBILE ASKS GOV'T TO CANCEL DEMOCRACY SUMMIT AFTER HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Brian Mundubile says the UPND administration should cancel the March 29-30, 2023 event, where the United States of America will co-host the second Summit for Democracy with Costa Rica, Netherlands, Korea, and Zambia, due to flouting human rights, recently exhibited.

Mr. Mundubile, a Patriotic Front - PF Presidential Candidate, said money for the Summit would have been channeled towards addressing the Dollar which is at K20, fuel at K29, ZESCO Connection Fees from K750 to K14,000, no medicine in hospitals, giving fertilizer in medas, excessive bus fares and high cost of mealie meal.

Mr. Mundubile said this is because 22 peaceful protesters that were airing their views on national issues were arrested.

He said journalists had recently been detained on duty for doing their work and former President Edgar Lungu was threatened with arrest for worshipping God.

He said such activities were not expected in a Constitutional Democracy.

"We are a Constitutional Democracy and like all said by one eminent writer 'The Greatness of any Nation lies in the fidelity to the Constitution'. What we are seeing today is a violation of the Constitution in many aspects," he said.

Mr. Mundubile said the country had seen a shrinking media and civic space under UPND.

"To host a Democracy Summit at a time like this, will be very difficult," he said.

Mr. Mundubile said, what the UPND Administration would present has many infringements, looking at some examples of violation of Human Rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

"We want to see what kind of poetry Government officials are going to present at the Summit given that they have not acted democratically in many instances," he said.
