WHAT TO TAKE FROM THE MINISTER’S ANNOUNCEMENT

1. NATIONAL SELECTION FOR 8 AND PUPILS WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 24TH TO 26TH DECEMBER 2024.

2. 28.1% OF CANDIDATES THAT SAT FOR THE 2024 GRADE 7 EXAMINATIONS HAVE FAILED AND WON'T PROCEED TO FORM 1 (FORMERLY GRADE 8).

3. 44.11% OF CANDIDATES THAT SAT FOR THE 2024 GRADE 9 EXAMINATIONS HAVE FAILED AND WON'T PROCEED TO FORM 3 (FORMERLY GRADE 10).

CULTURE: ICILANGA-MULILO MISREPRESENTED

Icilanga-mulilo lutambi lwa IciBemba. This pre-marriage ceremony is primarily between the son-in-law and the mother-in-law.

The ceremony takes place before ubwinga (wedding ceremony). The purpose of icilanga-mulilo is:

1. Ukushikula umulumendo (to make free the groom) so that he can be free to eat what is prepared for him by the mother-in-law;

2. Ukushikula umulumendo (to make free the groom) so that he can be free to bath the hot water prepared for him from the mother-in-law's house;

3. To show the son-in-law the variety of food available in his mother-in-law's house;

4. To give the son-in-law the opportunity to indicate to the mother-in-law the types of food he doesn't eat (so that they don't prepare such food for him in future).

Icilanga-mulilo IS NOT
1. about umukashana (the bride);

2. for teaching umukashana how to prepare food;

3. for teaching umukashana (the bride) about the meanings of food;

4. for teaching umukashana (the bride) about marriage.

In the olden days, the bride and groom would often come from different villages. When the groom visited the bride, he would only eat and bath water from the bride's grandmother.

Only after ukushikulwa (through icilanga-mulilo) would he be freed. A token of amashikulo was put on the food and in a cup of hot water.

HH MUST REVISIT FREE VISA AWARDS – HARRY KALABA

Harry Kalaba, the Citizens First President has advised President Hichilema and his government to slow down on dishing out ‘ free visa status’ to hundreds of countries without thinking the decision out thoroughly.

Kalaba, a respected former long term serving Minister of Foreign Affairs and lawmaker said Zambia needs to consider various issues such as economic and security before wantonly giving countries visa free entry status into the country.

“Some individuals from countries that have been granted visa free waivers into Zambia have troubled pasts of crime or mental they are running from,” said Kalaba, “you therefore need to build capacity to stop such characters from being offloaded into our peaceful country.”

The CF President was reacting to Hichilema’s administration's decision to allow some 53 countries to enter Zambia without prior visa scrutiny or security check.

“Remember that this brings the total number of countries that can enter our country visa free to 167,” said Kalaba, “the question is what value are these nationals bringing to Zambia compared to the security risks.”

Kalaba adds that of the 167 countries, there is no evidence that Zambia is enjoying the same ‘ visa free status’ to enter Comoros Island, Laos or Brunei.

The CF President said it is premature for Hichilema to dish out 53 new visa status countries into Zambia when no study has been done to compute how much Zambia has economically gained from the initial 100 visa countries awarded thus far.

Kalaba said instead of rushing to increase the dubious number of visa free status countries, Hichilema should have shown Zambians what the gains have been so far for those already enjoying the status Zambians are not even enjoying.

“My humble view as a former Minister of Foreign Affairs is that we should have placed the rule of ‘ reciprocity’ above anything else,” said Kalaba, “we should have also exhaustively exploited our gains with SADC, COMESA and AU before opening ourselves to the entire world at zero gain and high security risk.”

Many in the international relations circles locally and abroad continue to wonder why Hichilema has opened up Zambia to the world from people coming from as far as Iceland and Liechtenstein that have no economic ties with Zambia in any way.

Home Affairs Minister of Zambia Jack Mwiimbu says the move will increase Zambia’s tourism potential gains without providing any scientific numbers.

SAD: Retired banker loses K1 million after hacking!

A suspected cyberthief has swiped K1 million from two bank accounts of a 53-year-old retired banker after allegedly hacking into the victim’s online banking services.

The suspected online banking theft from Oritah Munsaka’s bank account held at Indo Zambia Bank happened on Thursday afternoon.

Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka said Ms Munsaka, of Mochipapa Township in Choma, reported that an unknown person had allegedly replaced her Zamtel mobile phone number linked to her two bank accounts and withdrew K939,886.

The suspected cybercrime happened on Thursday between 15:00 hours and 19:00 hours.

Mr Daka said investigations into the cybertheft have been instituted and police will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprit to book.
