HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG WIND DESTROY HOUSES AND TWO CLASSROOM BLOCKS IN GWEMBE DISTRICT

Over 20 houses have had their roofs brown off while others have collapsed following the heavy downpour that occurred in various wards of Gwembe District.

The storm also ripped off the roof of two classroom blocks including the newly constructed 1X3 classroom block at Munyumbwe Primary School.

Gwembe Town Council Chairperson Collet Ndhlovu who inspected the destroyed structures said the disaster happened on Tuesday.

Mr. Ndhlovu noted that the damage would disturb the learners as they will be forced to share the limited classrooms available.

He has since directed Engineering Department to urgently engage the contractor to work on the structure before it is too late.

Mr. Ndhlovu expressed regret over the loss of property which has caused several families to spend their nights in the cold.

He has further appealed to well-wishers to urgently intervene and provide relief and assistance to the victims.

UPDATE ON MPOX SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY BY HEALTH MINISTER ELIJAH MUCHIMA

Let me now update you on the MPOX SITUATION in our country.
The Copperbelt Province has recorded 4 Mpox confirmed cases in the last 23 days. The first three cases are a family involving husband, wife and a 1 year 7 months old child of Kitwe.

The three are linked and have been in isolation from 26th December to date. However, as of 12th January, 2025, the husband and wife have recovered and the child is on his way to full recovery.

The husbandwas discharged on Monday 13th January 2025. Primary contacts of this family have been monitored for the last 21 days so far and all of them have not presented with signs and symptoms.

The fourth case involves a 28 years old woman of Zimba compound in Mufulira; an area that is a few kilometres from the border with the DRC.

On Friday 10th January, 2025, she presented herself at Ng’ambi Health Post in Mufulira for treatment. Samples were collected and sent to the lab where she was confirmed to be suffering from Mpox.

Please note that this case is not linked to the cases in Kitwe. The teams on the ground are working round the clock to establish where she could have picked the disease from. The patient is currently in isolation at Chibolya Clinic in Mufulira where staff are managing her. The primary contacts are also being
monitored closely and are under home isolation.

Countrymen and Women,
Lusaka District had a suspected case of Mpox last week and early on Monday, 13th January, 2025, the test results for the 34 year old female came outpositive. This patient has since been transferred to UTH Infectious Diseases Ward where she is being managed and she is in stable condition. The close contacts of this case are also on close monitoring by the health authorities.

This therefore brings the total cumulative confirmed cases to six (6) including the first case we reported of a Tanzania truck driver diagnosed in Chitambo, Central Province last year.

Kasamu-Chikankata Road Upgrade to Bituminous Standard*

By Nchimunya Chingala

CHIKANKATA's Member of Parliament, Hon. Jacqueline Sabao said the 31-kilometer Kasamu-Chikankata road will be upgraded to bituminous standard this year.

She pointed out that the government has mobilized resources to undertake the project, which is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region.

Ms. Sabao assured CHIKANKATA residents that the road will be worked on this year, with tender procedures currently underway.

She said the initial contract for a gravel road has been revised to a tarred road due to delayed works and changes in the scope of works.

Hon. Sabao emphasized that the decision to upgrade the road was a government decision, not an individual one.

"Despite the delay, it's better we have a tarred road than gravel," she said.

The Kasamu-Chikankata road construction project is a key infrastructure development initiative aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic growth, and enhancing the overall quality of life for communities along the corridor.

The Road Development Agency (RDA) has invited bids from qualified contractors and expects to award the contract to the successful bidder soon.

THE ZAMBIA POLICE Service through Garden Police Post is investigating a shocking case of murder reported today, January 14, 2025, at approximately 16:30 hours.

The report was lodged by Mr. Emmanuel Kalaba, aged 55, of House Number 1295 Chelstone Extension, who informed the police that his young brother’s wife, Mrs. Sylvia Mutoba Kalaba, had consistently refused him and other family members access to his younger brother, Mr. George Kalaba, on multiple occasions between July 2023 and January 2025.

According to Mr. Kalaba, his concerns escalated when he visited the residence at approximately 06:00 hours this morning.

Upon arrival, he found the house locked, with Mrs. Sylvia Kalaba and her children inside.

He further interviewed the one of tenants, who revealed that he had not seen Mr. George Kalaba for the past two years and that Mrs. Sylvia Kalaba had been preventing anyone from visiting him.

Acting on this report, police officers rushed to the scene.

The Zambia Police Service would like to provide more information on the murder case which was reported at Macha Police Post under Choma Central Police Station on 07/01/2025 at 05:50 hours in which Mr. Agrippa Malawo aged 61 of Ntomba-Banyama village, Chief Chikanta, Kalomo district reported that his younger brother Mr. John Muchindu aged 48 of Meeke village, Chief Macha, Choma district was shot dead by an unknown person through a bedroom window whilst he was asleep inside his house. An unknown type of firearm was used.

This occurred on 06/01/2025 around 22:00 hours at Meeke village, Chief Macha in Choma district.

As part of the investigations, on 14/01/2025 Ms. Lillian Muleya aged 39, the wife to the deceased was summoned at Choma Central Police Station for interviews where a combined team of investigators from Macha Police Post and Choma Central Police had questions for her that she failed to answer in a satisfactory manner.

As the interview unfolded, she opened up and told the team of investigators what truly happened. Ms. Lillian Muleya revealed that she is the one who hired a Mr. Kagonkwa, whose other names are unknown, of Chubo village, Dundumwezi area in Kalomo district to kill her husband on the suspicion that he had bewitched their 18 year old daughter. She further revealed that at an unknown time and date in the year 2024, she travelled to Kalomo district where she met Mr. Kagonkwa who agreed to be paid an ox after killing her husband. It was on this day that the specifics of the plan were discussed. The killer was given full information on the set up of the place where the killing was going to be done and the time of plan ex*****on was agreed upon.

On the material day, she made sure that the husband was asleep and then she left the room leaving the window open. After the husband was shot at, that was when she went to the bedroom and she covered the husband with a blanket until he died. That was when she went to call on her son who was in another house but in the same yard and she pretended as though she was on the same bed with her husband when he was shot at, as the story she earlier gave.

A warn and caution statement was recorded and she has been detained for murder as investigations are still under way.

A manhunt has been launched for the said Mr. Kagonkwa and the recovery of the gun.

COMMERCIAL UTILITIES SCALE UP CHOLERA MITIGATION EFFORTS

The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS) has assured its commitment to combating the Cholera outbreak by working closely with other Ministries and stakeholders.

Minister Collins Nzovu says while the rainy season brings much-needed relief to drought-affected areas, it has also presented challenges, particularly the heightened risk of Cholera.

Mr. Nzovu says in response, the Ministry has intensified interventions to protect public health and ensure access to safe water and sanitation for all.

He says recognizing the critical role of water supply and sanitation in preventing Cholera, Commercial Utilities have implemented robust measures to support vulnerable communities, especially in identified Cholera hotspots.

The Minister says Commercial Utilities are employing superchlorination techniques to ensure safe drinking water, exceeding the standard chlorine levels to prevent post-contamination in water networks and storage facilities.

He urges all citizens to use the safe water services provided by Commercial Utilities and to adopt hygiene practices that contribute to Cholera prevention.

ZNS VOWS ZERO TOLERANCE TO SMUGGLING

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II has warned that the Service will dismiss personnel abetting smuggling of mealie meal and its products across the country.

Lt Gen Solochi disclosed that he has received reports with substantial evidence implicating some uniformed personnel in operations on the Copperbelt who are conniving with smugglers to illegally transport the staple food out of the country.

He condemned the practice as a betrayal of their duty to the nation and vowed that any ZNS personnel found aiding or abetting the smuggling of mealie meal would face instant dismissal in order to uphold the integrity of the Service.

Lt Gen Solochi said express orders will be conducted and that anyone found wanting will be delt with accordingly.

“This is a noble uniform, when you were this uniform, you must be a person who has committed their life and understand that the welfare of the country comes first,” the ZNS Commander said.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Copperbelt Provincial Permanent Secretary Mr Augustine Kasongo in Ndola yesterday, Lt Gen Solochi emphasized that officers must uphold the highest standards of integrity, standing as the nation’s first line of defence against corruption and unethical practices.

“We are in the Province on a two day working visit and part of our mission is to sensitize our men and women in uniform on the need to take anti smuggling operations seriously. Sadly I have reports with credible evidence that some of the soldiers are abetting smuggling,” he said.

The ZNS Commander emphasised the Institution's commitment to upholding discipline and maintaining public trust, adding that compromised officers tarnishing the name of the Service for selfish gain will be delt with accordingly.

He, however, commended the integrity of some officers who have helped expose the culprits, reaffirming that the Service is determined to root out corruption within its rank and file.

“The information we have about smuggling has been brought forward by dedicated and loyal officers who are actively fighting this scourge. We cannot allow a compromised few to tarnish the reputation of the Service or corrupt those who remain committed to their duty,” Lt Gen Solochi stated.

In response, Mr Kasongo commended ZNS for its unwavering dedication to various developmental projects in the Province.

He cited the critical role ZNS was playing not only in fostering national development but also in combating illegal activities such as smuggling.

“We are pleased with ZNS efforts in addressing issues of smuggling activities which has significantly reduced in comparison to the past few years. Your presence here underscores your commitment to this cause,” Mr Kasongo said.

The Permanent Secretary further praised the collaboration and professionalism demonstrated by ZNS officers, noting their significant contributions to the Province’s development agenda and their pivotal role in safeguarding national resources.

“We are also happy with the strong coordination and support we have been receiving from ZNS officers. Their hard work and dedication in tackling these challenges while advancing developmental projects deserve commendation,” he added.

He assured the Commander of the Province’s full support in achieving the shared goal of eradicating illegal activities and promoting sustainable development.

SHOOTING AND RECOVERY OF MOTOR VEHICLE IN AGGRAVATED ROBBERY CASE-MATERO POLICE

January 14, 2025-The Zambia Police Service wishes to provide information on a case of aggravated robbery and a subsequent shooting incident that occurred earlier today, January 14, 2025.

At approximately 1200 hours, Matero Police Station received a report from Mr. Kalinda John, aged 33, of Chipata Compound, who reported on behalf of his brother, Mr. Emmanuel Kalinda, aged 35. Mr. Emmanuel Kalinda, a Yango driver, was attacked and robbed of his motor vehicle, a Toyota IST with registration number BAV 2007, by four criminals armed with a pistol. The incident took place at Chingwele Cemetery around 1100 hours.

Brief Facts of the Incident:

At about 1045 hours, Mr. Kalinda, while operating as a Yango driver, picked up four individuals: two males and two females, who requested to be driven to Chingwele Cemetery. Upon arrival at the cemetery, the passengers turned on him, brandishing a pistol, and threatened to shoot him. They proceeded to steal his vehicle.

The victim promptly reported the matter to Matero Police Station and informed officers that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

The police swiftly followed up on the GPS signal and tracked the stolen vehicle to the vicinity of Chifundo Market in George Compound. Upon locating the vehicle, an exchange of gunfire ensued between the police and the suspects.

During the exchange, regrettably two male suspects, estimated to be between the ages of 30 and 35, were fatally shot. They were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

A search of the recovered vehicle revealed a Shark-C pistol, serial number T6472-08E000367, with one bullet. This was the weapon used to threaten the complainant.

The motor vehicle has been successfully recovered and is secured.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the mortuary, pending identification, postmortem examination, and subsequent burial arrangements.

Advisory to Vehicle Owners:

The Zambia Police Service urges all vehicle owners to install security gadgets such as GPS trackers in their vehicles. These devices significantly enhance the chances of recovering stolen vehicles and apprehending perpetrators in cases of robbery or theft.

We commend the swift action of the officers involved in this operation, which led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and the neutralization of the threat posed by the armed criminals. We also urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.

The Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
