Recently, Namibia and Zambia signed an agreement in Swakopmund, with an aim of constructing the Namibia-Zambia Gas Pipeline.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Zambia’s Peter Kapala and Namibia’s Tom Alweendo, Minister of Mines and Energy.

Receiving an investment by Chinese company Dinson Iron and Steel Company under the Tsingshan Holding Group, a steel factory in Zimbabwe started construction on Thursday. The steel factory is located in the Mvuma, Midland Province of the African country. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa attended the groundbreaking ceremony, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.

During the ceremony, Mnangagwa said that thanks to this new facility, Zimbabwe will have one of the largest steel factories in the African continent and its annual steel output is expected to reach 600,000 tons.

He said the steel factory project was a milestone for Zimbabwe to step into modernization and industrialization. The joint venture of THE ARAB CONTRACTORS (Osman Ahmed Osman & Co) and ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC celebrated on the 6th of October 2022 the pouring of the last batch of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) of the main dam of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP). Construction of the main dam lasted 687 days since the Rufiji River was diverted on the 18th of November 2020.

Completion of the main dam construction triggered a two-month preparation phase for the impounding of Rufiji River’s water behind the dam. The preparations include the installation of giant gates and orifices on 3 different levels in the main dam in order to guarantee and maintain the necessary flow of the River to preserve the ecological integrity of the River downstream, and to discharge excess water caused by extraordinary floods during the dam’s operation. Nigerian National Petroleum Co. (NNPC) anticipates an investment decision on the proposed $25bn gas pipeline from Nigeria to Morocco by next year, reported Bloomberg News, citing the NNPC head.Leading Guide to Pipeline Systems for the Offshore Industry.

The presidents of Tanzania and Kenya have agreed to fast-track construction of a natural gas pipeline designed to increased trade and lower energy costs for both countries.

The decision was reached Monday in bilateral talks in Dar es Salaam led by Tanzanian President Samia Hassan and Kenyan President William Ruto, during a two-day visit.

Last year, Hassan and Kenya’s then-president Uhuru Kenyatta signed an agreement in Nairobi to start working on the gas pipeline project, but actual construction has yet to commence.

While some sub-Saharan African countries are making things difficult for telecommunications operators and equipment suppliers through new or increased taxes, Zambia appears to be taking a different route – at least when it comes to infrastructure.

According to the ITWeb Africa news service, in its 2023 national budget the country is now zero-rating the importation of telecommunications equipment, notably equipment used in the construction of telecommunications masts.

MINES and energy minister Tom Alweendo and his Zambian counterpart Peter Kapala are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation on the construction of a natural gas pipeline project from Zambia to Walvis Bay at Swakopmund on Thursday.

According to Kapala, the gas will be used for power generation while the oil pipeline will help reduce the cost of petroleum products in the southern African nation.

He said the project was expected to take three to four years to complete.

“It is good news that Namibia has discovered oil and gas, and we will discuss how this resource can be of benefit to the people of the region. In an effort to provide easily accessible, clean and safe water to local people in its areas of operation, Zambia based Zambeef Products Plc has donated water points valued at K250,000 (US$15,800) to Kafue District’s Makanya village.

A total of 600MW of solar and wind energy in South Africa are expected to be established by the Anglo Americans. This comes after the formation of the joint venture company Envusa Energy with EDF Renewables.

In a memorandum of understanding signed last year, the two companies focused on establishing an ecosystem of renewable energy plants by 2030. The ecosystem is expected to provide three to five gigawatts of power.

According to Anglo, this initial phase will be entirely funded by debt typical for high-quality energy infrastructure projects. The construction was slated to begin the next year. The announcement also comes after South Africa has experienced a record number of outages this year.

Africa must make use of all its energy resources, as it needs to achieve development. So affirmed African Union (AU) Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy Amani Abou-Zeid in her keynote address to the Africa Oil Week conference in Cape Town. She highlighted that some 50% of African people still had no access to modern energy. Moreover, for the first time, the process of connecting Africans to modern energy had slowed down.

“Africa will have to utilise all forms of its energy sources to meet all its needs,” she said. “Now is not the time to be picking and choosing.”

The continent might need to triple or even quadruple its electricity production, to fulfil all its requirements. And using all of Africa’s energy sources to achieve universal access to electricity would mean that the continent’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions would come to no more than 3.5%.

Africa contained 65% of the world’s remaining untapped arable land, she pointed out. Yet many Africans remained in a state of food insecurity. The lack of modern energy crippled the development of African agriculture. (She also referred to the importance of gas across Africa for cooking.)

The current war in Europe, she noted, had only confirmed what the AU had always said about the centrality and criticality to Africa of energy, as well as highlighting the importance of security and resilience. But crises also created opportunities. Just as the Covid-19 pandemic had driven digitalisation, so to the conflict in Ukraine had created the opportunity for Africa to export gas to Europe, where the European Union had declared natural gas to be a transitional energy during the decarbonisation process. “This is a window of opportunity for us to use our resources.”

There were also opportunities for African countries to produce green hydrogen. At least six African countries, she observed, had already started producing green hydrogen.

In a previous address, on Monday, Abou-Zeid had stated that it was important that African countries attend the imminent COP27 Climate Conference (in Egypt) with the common continental position that they had already agreed to, at the AU. That included improving their energy mixes to those which were cleaner and more sustainable. Africa was not a “climate denier”. But Africa could not be committed to deadlines applicable to other regions. “Our resources must work for us, and work for us from our perspective.”

Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter said power cuts should start easing within the next ten days when big generation units are expected to come back online.

The state utility ramped up power rationing to 4 000 MW from 18:00 Tuesday until further notice due to generation trips at its Kendal and Lethabo plants and has imposed a record 120 days of blackouts so far in 2022.

“We are doing everything possible to add MW to the grid,” De Ruyter told Johannesburg-based Radio Sonder Grense. “We have started buying power from Zambia, and we are looking at Mozambique and the private sector to add megawatts.”

The private sector has a total of 6 000 MW of new renewable projects in the pipeline, he said. Those projects were targeted after President Cyril Ramaphosa in July said companies will be allowed to build power plants of any size without a licence to meet their own needs and to sell it to the grid...
