ZAMBIAN NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM TO MISS SENIOR AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS.

The Zambian National Baseball5 Team will miss the Senior African Championships in Cape Verde scheduled to kickoff on 5th to 8th February 2024. The team will also miss the subsequent World Cup Qualifiers in Hong Kong due to financial constraints.

The Zambia Baseball and Softball Association (ZBSA) General Secretary Kenny Matishi confirmed the news saying, "Due to financial challenges, we won't be sending the team to the World Cup Qualifiers."

This development comes as a disappointment to the national team's aspirations to capitalize on the recent achievements of the youth squad. The youth team marked their World Cup debut at the Ankara 2023 Youth Baseball5 World Cup in Turkey last year and had aimed to secure qualification for their inaugural Senior World Cup tournament.

Despite this setback, Matishi expressed commitment to advancing the sport and preparing for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

He assured that ZBSA will focus on enhancing grassroots development and fielding a competitive team for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. Matishi expressed optimism about the future of Zambian baseball and emphasized continued investment and development for international prominence.

A STREET VENDORS ACCIDENTAL MISHAP WITH NATURE CAUSES PANIC IN MAZABUKA

ACTIVITY came to a dramatic halt on Friday afternoon after a female Street Vendor operating opposite a named Service Station in Mazabuka, soiled herself following a bout of severe diarrhea on her way to buy medicine at a drug store.

The rather unfortunate incident forced people scamper in different directions as the f***l matter spread across the ground.

An account narrated to Byta FM News by an eye witness reveals that the woman believed to be in her 40s had earlier complained of having a stomach ache, prompting her move to purchase medicine at a nearby Chemist.

However, before reaching the drug store, the woman started to discharge diarrhea-like matter and decided to rush in a nearby land reserve to answer the call of nature, but failed to make it.

Quick action by the Mazabuka District Emergency Rapid Response Team resulted in then fumigating the area whilst the victim was rushed to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Mazabuka District Commissioner, Oliver Mulomba, has disclosed that over 91 Cholera cases have so far been recorded in the town.

He notes that majority of the cases recorded in the district are from Fishing Camps, hence calling on residents to observe good hygiene standards.

SYAKALIMA CALLS FOR ENHANCED COOPERATION BETWEEN INDIA AND ZAMBIA IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR

Education Minister Hon. Douglas Syakalima has called for strengthened cooperation in the Education sector between Zambia and India.

Hon. Syakalima said India has advanced in areas such as Technology which Zambia’s education sector is aggressively pursuing.

The Minister was speaking when he officiated at the commemoration of India’s 75th Republic Day in Lusaka, Friday 26th January 2024.

India Republic Day is a National holiday in India on which the country commemorates the adoption of the constitution of India, which came into effect on 26 January 1950.

“We in Zambia are proud of how India has continued to protect and respect its Constitution. This is because Zambia, as a growing democracy, is aware that the Constitution is important because it ensures that those who make decisions on behalf of the public fairly represent public opinion.” Hon. Syakalima said.

He said Zambia and India have for a long time enjoyed warm and bilateral relations with cooperation in many sectors.

The Education Minister said Zambia appreciates India’s efforts led by the Hon. Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi for the admission of the African Union (AU) in the G 20.

Hon. Syakalima added that in the education sector, Zambia is appreciative to India for helping Zambia through many cooperating areas such as the international therapy examination council (ITEC) programmes offered by India.

“Government and the Ministry of Education in particular would like to further collaborate with India in the education sector because Zambia has put education at the center of its development agenda.

And Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Mr. Ashok Kumar said India was one of the first country to recognize Zambia soon after its independence in 1964.

He said this reflects the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The friendship enjoyed between the two countries has continued to blossom over the years with successive governments.” Mr. Kumar said.

BREAKING NEWS: MOROCCO WINS APPEAL AGAINST CAF BAN ON THEIR HEAD COACH WALAD REGRAHUI

Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the sanctions that the Disciplinary Committee had previously issued against Morocco national coach Walid Regragui, including the financial fine, after hearing the arguments of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

The Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football decided to suspend the national coach for 4 matches, including two effective matches and two suspended matches, and to impose a financial fine on the Congolese and Moroccan federations, after a brawl inssued between the Lions and Panthers last Sunday.

Regragui had missed the match between the Moroccan national team and its Zambian counterpart, for the final round of the group stage, and watched the Atlas lions from the stands.

The Moroccan national team will face the South African national team next Tuesday, at 10pm in San Pedro.

POLICE REPORT ON HOW THE COUNCILLOR DIVERTED 450 BAGS OF GOVERNMENT MAIZE

Chipata Central Police Station is currently investigating a case of theft involving the misappropriation of 450 bags of white maize, designated as relief food for vulnerable citizens under Sisinje Ward, Chipangali District.

The incident was reported by Moffat Mulile, a 46-year-old Disaster Management Officer residing in the Chipata Motel area.

According to the report, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit engaged the assistance of Councilors in Chipangali Constituency to facilitate the distribution of relief maize to vulnerable citizens.

On the January 25, 2024, 1100 hours, a Volvo truck, white in color, with registration number ARB 3632, was loaded with 450 bags of white maize from the Food Reserve Agency shed at Mgubudu.

The truck was driven by Mabvuto Mwale aged 37, of Mthilansembe Compound in Chipata District. Moffat Mulile escorted the truck up to Lundazi turn off, where he handed it over to Phillip Bobat Phiri, the Councilor for Sisinje Ward.

However, it was later discovered that instead of delivering the maize to his ward, Phillip Bobat Phiri diverted the truck to Chipwizi Farm off Mfuwe road in Chipata District with the intention of selling the relief maize.

Alert Police officers from Chipata Airport Police Station who were following up on another report in the area intercepted the theft in progress. Individuals were found offloading the maize from the truck at Chipwizi Farm.

Further investigation revealed that Phillip Bobat Phiri had approached James Sakala, a 38-year-old businessman from Nyakutwa area in Chipata, who purchases maize at Lundazi turn off, indicating that he had 450 bags of maize for sale.

James Sakala, in turn, hired individuals to offload the maize, which was packed in Food Reserve Agency branded bags.

All involved parties, including Phillip Bobat Phiri (the Councilor), James Sakala (the buyer), Mabvuto Mwale (the truck driver), and his co-driver Jones Mwale, have been apprehended and are currently in police custody.

The value of the stolen maize is yet to be ascertained. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA HOSTS ANNUAL GREETING CEREMONY FOR DIPLOMATIC CORPS ACCREDITED TO ZAMBIA

President Hichilema writes...

It was a pleasure meeting the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Zambia at our annual greeting ceremony, this morning.

We appreciate the pivotal role played by our development partners in 2023, facilitated by the Diplomatic Corps, particularly in the area of debt. Together we are working towards the expeditious conclusion of the process to avoid a potential reversal of the gains made so far, that would send a message that the global system has failed.

We expressed gratitude to the diplomats for their prompt response to the cholera outbreak in Lusaka. We are committed to addressing this recurring situation, which has claimed numerous lives, with a focus on public health rather than political expediency. The strict enforcement of necessary health and local authorities' regulations must be implemented to save lives.

We called for a peaceful resolution of military conflicts worldwide and expressed our commitment to deepen our democracy while respecting the rule of law and human rights.

We look forward to our continued collaboration with our partners in development anchored on the twin pillars of Peace, Security and Stability and Economic Diplomacy.

Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.

SOUTH AFRICA WELCOMES THE PROVISIONAL MEASURES ORDERED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE AGAINST ISRAEL

Today marks a decisive victory for the international rule of law and a significant milestone in the search for justice for the Palestinian people. In a landmark ruling, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has determined that Israel’s actions in Gaza are plausibly genocidal and has indicated provisional measures on that basis. For the implementation of the international rule of law, the decision is a momentous one. South Africa thanks the Court for its swift ruling.

The United Nations Security Council will now be formally notified of the Court’s order pursuant to Article 41(2) of the Court’s Statute. The veto power wielded by individual states can not be permitted to thwart international justice, not least in light of the ever-worsening situation in Gaza brought about by Israel’s acts and omissions in violation of the Genocide Convention.

Third States are now on notice of the existence of a serious risk of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. They must, therefore, also act independently and immediately to prevent genocide by Israel and to ensure that they are not themselves in violation of the Genocide Convention, including by aiding or assisting in the commission of genocide. This necessarily imposes an obligation on all States to cease funding and facilitating Israel's military actions, which are plausibly genocidal.

Above all else, the provisional measures are directly binding on Israel, which is required pursuant to the Court’s order and to the Genocide Convention itself, to stop all acts by it that are plausibly genocidal, such as those raised by South Africa in its Application and request for the indication of provisional measures.

There is no credible basis for Israel to continue to claim that its military actions are in full compliance with international law, including the Genocide Convention, having regard to the Court’s ruling.

South Africa sincerely hopes that Israel will not act to frustrate the application of this Order, as it has publicly threatened to do, but that it will instead act to comply with it fully, as it is bound to do.

South Africa will continue to act within the institutions of global governance to protect the rights, including the fundamental right to life, of Palestinians in Gaza – which continue to remain at urgent risk including from Israeli military assault, starvation and disease – and to obtain the fair and equal application of international law to all, in the interest of our collective humanity. Notably, South Africa will continue to do everything within its power to preserve the existence of the Palestinian people as a group, to end all acts of apartheid and genocide against the Palestinian people and to walk with them towards the realisation of their collective right to self-determination, for, as Nelson Mandela momentously declared, “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”.

The indication by this Court of provisional measures pursuant to the Genocide Convention marks a significant historical step towards that goal.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PRESS BRIEFING HELD BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA HON CORNELIUS MWEETWA

The Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa this afternoon held his weekly engagement with the media and discussed a number of issues of national importance.

Below are the highlights:

✅ The Chief Government Spokesperson acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the various forms of support the government is receiving from both domestic and foreign partners in the fight against cholera.

✅ Government commends the frontline workers who have given up their lives to confront the Cholera pandemic.

✅ The decline in the Cholera cases and the rising number of those who are being discharged is a sign that government is winning the fight against Cholera.

✅ The President has given a directive to Cabinet to come up with measures that will address the challenges of Cholera once and for all and to that effect, the committee of Ministers under the guidance and leadership of the Vice President Mutale W.K Nalumango met to consider short, medium and long-term solutions in the fight against Cholera in Zambia.

✅ The President of the Republic of Zambia, who is a champion against cholera, has stated that Zambia needs to set an example for others to follow and, as a result, there is need to develop long-term strategies to fight the disease.

✅ The committee of Ministers will advise the country on the next steps to take after the best and most appropriate suggestions have been made, so that the current cholera outbreak is the last of its kind.

✅ The Minister expressed gratitude and congratulations to the many people who supported the UPND Government by casting votes of confidence in the Mayembe and Kampamba ward elections in Shawang’andu and Mpika districts respectively.

✅ This is a sign the sign that voters are appreciating government’s programmes that include free education, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), payments to retirees, peace reigning in the country among others.

✅ Mr. Mweetwa also commended Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament Stephen Kampyongo for demonstrating great leadership in the by-elections associated with Shiwang’andu where he visited and joined the UPND campaign meeting.

✅ Government is delighted to have recruited more than 7000 teachers last year which is unprecedented.

✅ President Hakainde Hichilema is fixing it while the opposition watch in disbelief and denial.

✅ The Agro input distribution program was completed perfectly the previous year; all the districts received the correct amounts of fertiliser and seed. However, government is aware that there are issues with the way the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) was handled.

✅ Government has observed a rush for seed and fertilizer this year; data from seed distribution and sales companies indicate that seed companies have sold an unprecedented number of metric tonnes of seed, demonstrating that citizens and farmers have embraced the President's encouragement for those who can, to pursue farming.

✅ Government would like to refute assertions by some sectors of society that it is importing and distributing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) maize through the Zambia National Service (ZNS).

✅ The claims are demonstrably untrue and unjustified. The Zambian government is putting out the challenge to anyone disseminating misleading information to show proof of any genetically modified maize or mealie meal on the Zambian market.

✅ Contrary to the assertions, the maize being imported from South Africa is not for Zambia but for onward transmission into the Democratic Republic of Zambia (DRC) market.

✅ Government has come up with this initiative to saturate mealie meal in the demand zone in order to reduce smuggling of the pure white grade 1 non-GMO mealie meal.

WE GAVE OUR ALL BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH - FRANKIE MUSONDA

Zambia national team defender, Frankie Chisenga Musonda, expressed his disappointment as the team fell short of advancing to the knockout stage in the 2023 TotalEnergies Cote D'Ivoire Africa Cup of Nations. Despite giving their all, Zambia faced elimination in the group stage.

Musonda, making his tournament debut alongside many fellow players, showcased a commendable performance in the center-back position alongside veteran defender Stoppila Sunzu. The Ayr United defender took to Instagram to share his sentiments on the AfCON exit, stating, "We gave our all, unfortunately, it wasn't enough."

In the final group match of Group F against Morocco, Musonda and the team displayed one of their best performances in years, narrowly losing 1-0. Despite the disappointment, Musonda conveyed resilience, saying, "We are all disappointed, but we will learn from the experience and come back stronger."

Zambia, after missing three editions of the tournament, views their participation this year as a solid foundation for the current crop of young players. They aim to make a strong return in the 2025 Morocco tournament.

Musonda, who opted to play for Zambia over his birth country England, emphasized the honor of representing his nation. He expressed gratitude, stating, "It's always an honor to wear this shirt. Thank you for your support."
