ZRA Intercepts 80,000 Liters Of Ethanol Worth 3.1 Million Kwacha.
The Zambia Revenue Authority has intercepted 80,000 liters of ethanol, which was smuggled into the country.
ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala said the ethanol, packed in 80 drums each of 1000 liters, was declared as hydrogen peroxide.
He however said an inspection for quantity and declaration revealed that the product was ethanol.
He further said inspections of the two trucks used for smuggling and verification of documents also revealed that the same consignment was declared as ethanol in Botswana.
He noted that the drums on the trucks have stickers that show that the consignment is hydrogen peroxide which conceals the true consignment, which is ethanol.

FOLLOWING the outbreak of cholera, government has announced that all schools will remain closed for three weeks.
Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima made the announcement this morning stating that the decision follows a meeting by a National Disaster Management and Mitigation Council of Ministers.
He said all public, private, aided and community learning institutions such as early childhood education centres, primary and secondary schools will remain closed for a further three weeks after the official opening date of January 8.
Mr Syakalima said schools will only open on Monday, 29th January, 2024 and that the grace period which was earlier given to grades eight and 10 learners has now been overtaken, all learners are expected to open on 29th January, 2024.
He said in order to catch up on time lost, the first term holidays will only run for one week instead of four weeks, which implies that schools will close for term one on 26th April instead of 5th April, 2024, and open for term two as scheduled on May 6 2024.
Mr Syakalima further advised parents and guardians to prepare children for term two even before term one closes, in view of the short holiday.

Socialist Party National Youth Secretary Says UNZA Students Must Not Pay Surcharge For Rioting.
Socialist Party National Youth Secretary Gabriel Banda has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to rescind University of Zambia Management's decision for all students to pay a surcharge of K1,000 after a riot which occurred at Great East Road Campus on the 18th of September, 2023.
Mr Banda who is former UNZASU President for the 2021 academic year said UNZA management must be sensitive to the economic hardships the country is facing.
He said the said riot must be blamed on UNZA Management's failure to allow the students to have their Union elections as budgeted for in the UNZASU budget and according to the procedures spelt out in the UNZASU constitution.
He therefore said it is irresponsible for UNZA Management to blame students for something they could have avoided.
Mr Banda said the UPND government must resolve the issue if they care about the welfare of students.

President Hichilema Says Beef Production Is Profitable.
President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA said beef production remains one of the rewarding farming businesses in agriculture.
President Hichilema said with the existence of markets in the neighboring countries, raising beef cattle can be a rewarding farming enterprise.
President Hichilema said this yesterday in Choma, Southern Province, where he is currently checking on cattle at his ranches.
President Hichilema said the ranches have been operating for more than 20 years, creating employment in the process.
The Head of State said it is his desire that besides the government creating jobs and business opportunities, individuals also must strive hard to create opportunities for others who may not be able to.
